Hi all so I have an 07 a4 with 120K that I need to replace the engine due to me being a dumb ass and not check the oil consistently... which resulted in breaking the timing chain. I need peoples opinion.
Keep in mind I still owe 6,000 on the car

here are my choices:
1.) just get ride of it as is and go into a lease
2.) get an engine with 100K for $3600 to do all and trade it in for a lease
3.) get an engine with 75K for $3900 to do it all and trade it in for a lease
4.) get a Crate engine for $4500 to do it all and then drive the car and hope it last for 3yrs

with a new engine will the car last 3 years? What are some things i need to consider?

Were you also a "dumb ass" by not checking the section, and posting this in the B8 S4 forum?

That and the fact a timing chain doesn't break because of lack of oil changes. Other parts will likely seize and eventually cause the timing chain to snap...
I would get rid of the car and let someone else look after the car for you.

if you are gonna put an engine in it, the cost differential for the new motorvs the used ones is a no-brainer for many reasons.

personally i would go with option #2 if that is financially appropriate for you, but it really depends on what the cost as is trade in is vs option #2 trade in

$3,000 to $4,000

So you're saying the value of the car is 3-4k with or without a running motor? I imagine with a running motor it should go up to 7-8k. Personally I'd go with option 1 and trade it in.

If you owe $6k on a car that's worth $3-4k as it sits I would not put another $4k into it (putting you at $10k) just to trade it on a lease. Financially that just seems crazy. If you can sell it as is, you're out $2-3k with no more headaches and a lesson learned. If put the money into to fixing it, it still seems like you'll be out the same $2-3k if you can sell it at $7k but now you are selling a car with a story attached to it and the headaches attached to that.

If you really liked the car (when it wasn't broken) and felt like keeping it, spend the extra money on the crate motor and then you can drive that car into the ground (oh wait, poor choice of words[=(]).

There are motors available with around 60,000 for about $2000, if you owe 6k and you trade it running you may not have broken even.
