i'm coming up on 25k miles (car is over 3 years old and i'm just now getting there!), and was looking at the maintenance schedule. air filter isn't till 55k. I didn't think paper filters lasted that long. Have people changed it out faster and seen that it's really a good idea to change it out sooner?

You hold filter to a light source and see if light can come through it, if not replace.

Paper filters are relatively cheap. I have peak every now and then, but admittedly I end up vacuuming and blowing compressed air through them far more often than I actually stick in a new one.

Man someone is cheap lol. I wouldn't say lazy since it takes longer to do that than replace.

the cost isn't the issue for me, they're like $25. It's the time to go in there. ever since i had a kid, i've had to budget my time a lot more, so my reason for asking people's experience is, if i don't need to waste time going in there, I won't.
But since it's been 3 years, i'll probably go ahead anyway. [:)]

I'm probably odd, but I bought an aFe Power Pro Dry S filter that can be cleaned. Since I don't put a lot of miles on the car (2013 with 22k) I change my oil every 6 months. While I'm doing that I take the filter out and vacuum it off. Probably, bump up to the Pro 5 R (oiled) when I go stage 2. YMMV.

Clean and change my filter every 5k with oil changes. I have two filters for my stratmosphere intake

Heh... man i tell ya... i have to pick my battles. Wifey doesnt appreciate me being unavailable for hours at a time on weekends. And between working out, yardwork, and other random things i have to do, i have to budget my time.
And since i havent opened up the filter housing before, the first time always takes longer than expected, making sure I'm not flubbing it up.
I'll probably swap it out this time around. But i did want to get a sense of life expectancy on these things.
