Obviously I have a 2007 Audi A4 2.0T. I have been having problems for awhile now, but haven't really taken the time to figure out what it was. A combination of graduating from college, starting a new job, planning a wedding, doing my reserve duty, and moving has more or less taken up my time. Oh and then laziness. Anyways, I was concerned with the amount of oil my car was consuming, right now it's pretty freaking bad. I can top off my oil (as long as it needs it) and then drive around 400 miles and be in the "Low" area. On top of that I am blowing out white smoke out of my exhaust on acceleration, but if I keep it under like 2K RPMs no smoke ever. I've had it smoke after being at a stop light tough which was weird.

Did my research, thought it was a PCV thing so I replaced it. Still Happens...

Asked my mechanic, was basically told without doing a bunch of tests he can't say for sure whats wrong. Like I mentioned before I just finished moving so I didn't have the time for him to do a bunch of test nor the money.

Was going to see how much oil was in my inter cooler today but got side tracked because I decided to check out a noise I have been hearing that no mechanic has been able to identify at all. It basically sounds like a non rhythmic heartbeat from my intake area. So after some thinking I decided to take my intake apart down to the MAF to see if I could hear the "heartbeat" coming from maybe the engine basically using the intake as a hearing aid haha. Well found oil in my intake, and not just a little. enough to put a circular oil spot on my filter. Decided to check my spark plugs, they are ash fouled. My coolant is low, but I literally have never topped it off since I got the car, I will now because it's just under the min mark but it's not like it disappeared overnight. Oh and there is oil in my freaking exhaust on the driveway...

What the hell is happening? Any ideas?

You have a bad oil leak somewhere. find a new mechanic while your at it. check you valve cover gasket for leaks to start of from there.

I was going to recommend the valve cover itself. they tend to break internally. You may want to do a leak down and compression test to see what your numbers are looking like to rule out internal engine failure as well.

I haven't seen any of them to be honest. I have yet to attend one. When are you moving down?

Well I am in Upstate NY now so I need to find a new mechanic anyways so hopefully I can find a good one. I will look into the leak down and compression test and checking my valve cover in the mean time.

I would [o_o]at the turbo.

OK quick update, did a compression test about 30 minutes ago and got about 170 on all 4 cylinders. Still need to do a leak down test but that involves a bit more time than I have during the week. Hopefully I can do it this weekend. I also need to inspect the turbo for any movement and such. Here are some pics of the results, just click the dropbox.

Check this out too http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/642701-Compression-Test-Results

Check oil in your intercooler pipes.

The underside of your valve cover is cracked and is causing oil to spill into your turbo intake under load, resulting in a huge cloud of smoke. Check it and see.

I took my valve cover off last weekend and didn't notice any cracks, although I wonder if part of the seal for the underside of the cover is cracked. I noticed a small bulge and by small i mean like 1-2mm bulge near the edge. I want to say that's the problem, and I hope it is because that's a relatively cheap fix.

Anyone have ANY idea what would cause a heartbeat sounding noise? It sounds like it is coming from the passenger side near the turbo. DV?

Anyways, unless I can say for certain what the problem is this weekend I am dropping it off at a local mechanic to look at it.

Touch the N80 valve while it is running and see if it is in sync with your sound.

your going through the exact same issue as me. Ive replaced the pcv/valvecover/breather done the compression test and came out to roughly 178 across the board.

I also have ash building up on my plugs, but I'm not sure if that is related or not.

It has to be the turbo. Im going to be replacing mine soon. just deciding if I'm going to be replacing with a k03, or taking this time to upgrade to a k04.

For the heartbeat noise check your diverter valve. I had a fluttering/thumping coming from it because it couldn't handle 24psi. Upgraded toGFB DV+ and was fixed

Are you tuned?

No tune, I will be buying a GFB DV+ and putting that in.

What could be wrong in the turbo? the bearing seals? I checked it when I had my valve cover off for extra play and it didn't move.

I will check the N80 valve today as well.

I have the same noise. Let me known if GFB DV+ solved your issue.

Ok, so took it to mechanic. Long story short, CRACKED VALVE COVER. Heart beat noise gone, smoke gone, oil is not being consumed nearly as much after a week of driving. The crack in my valve cover was in the seem of the cover, couldn't even see it until they blew smoke into the cover to test it.

Thats good to hear. I wonder if the new cover i got was also cracked from the factory. I just b\put on a brand new one (onto my third cover). Since i have the same symptoms you had, maybe that will be the end of my problems as well.. #praying
