View Full Version : Wheel Bearing Question
Hi all,
Quick(or maybe not) question that I can't seem to find a for sure answer to. I need a new front wheel bearing, so am I able to buy the the bearing/housing

Or do I need to buy something like this

I've read that I'll need a press, but then other times I've read that I won't need one, or that only the rear needs a press and the fronts don't, blah blah etc.
Also, from the ship date on the ECS kit (not until July) I would love if I could just get the other one and call it done.

If you dont want to deal with pressing it in / out just buy the whole thing. Otherwise, just use a bearing separator and thread some screws through the hub flange to pull it out from the bearing. For pressing it back in you may need a press if you cant figure out other creative ways to press it back in.

Awesome thanks for the reply! So let's say I don't want to get pillaged by the shops, would I be ok waiting to replace it until ECS can ship the whole assembly in July?

Probably yes. You might also encounter some issues removing the bearing though because of corrosion. And remember you need some bar to create enough leverage to torque those axle nuts.

Personally, I would just buy the whole assembly from ECS since it is only $40 more. Save the hassle of having to get the hub pressed in and out and get new hubs to boot.

True, but even so, if OP doesn't want to wait until July 26th, then other methods are available. Could take a bearing separator and the lug nuts press against each other and pull the wheel flange off, so just the bearing sits in the steering knuckle. remove the bolts from wheel bearing, then pop the bad bearing off with a punch and hammer or slide hammer. For pressing the wheel flange back on just get a harmonic balancer puller, some nuts, and washers and compress the two together. For me it's all about the least downtime and if it was a bad wheel bearing, I would get to work right away. But then again, that's just me.

If you have any kind of hydrolic press at home really, it is fairly easy to do...It's just needed to push the bearing out from the other end because a lot of pressure is needed to get it into the hub. Then reverse the process of installing the new bearing into your old hub.
If you call a local shop that has a bearing press and you bring them the hub with old bearing in it + new bearing, they would probably charge you less than $40 price difference because it takes them max 15min to do it while you wait.
Don't replace anything you need to guys unless you got time to spare [:)]

I got charged $80 here in CT to do 2 hubs/bearings. Thats the extra cost of the new hubs already being installed right there.
