Best way to check intake cam wear?

Is pulling the hpfp the only way to check wear of the camshaft?

I replaced a broken follower and found the hpfp had a lot of wear and made the mistake of not checking the intake cam while I had it off...
I'm sure it is probably worn. Not wanting to pull the hpfp again if there's a better way to view the camshaft in its entirety.

Want to make sure it's toast before I buy new hpfp internals and have audi replace the cam for $1600.


If I pull the top engine cover and brake the gasket seal do I need a new one?

I just went through this exact scenario. The thing to keep in mind is that the cam is not controlling precision timing of a valve. All it is doing is pushing the plunger on your pump.
I took the timing cover off and although it was scored from my fuel pump I used some emery cloth and dressed it up so it is smooth.
What you are really trying to avoid is the cam wearing out another follower if it is not smooth. Sure if the lobes are worn down you will get less fuel but I have had no lean codes and I have a stock setup.
I will check the follower again in 3k. If the follower is getting worn I will go for the cam. It's only about 300 bucks for the cam. God knows how they get the bill to 1600.

If you're thinking about having the work done, check around with some reputable mechanic shops. A local shop I trust quoted me $1500 to replace the Cam, HPFP, Cam Chain, and Tensioner. They also warranty their work for 24k miles or 2 years; which ever comes first.

I recently had some work done by an Audi/VW specialist shop and the Cam replacement was one of the cheaper things they did for me. I had my cam followers replaced, oil change, brake flush, timing belt/water pump replacement, coolant flush, tire rotation, and spark plugs all for only $1,325

What they want to do is replace the camshaft which is not something you got done for $1,325

btw I don't think you can buy the button for the hpfp you are looking for . I think you will need a new pump. Good used ones are hard to find. I got one off amazon ( oem hitachi ) for 230.00. if you do find a place that will sell you parts let me know and I will rebuild mine as a spare.

I'll just buy the upgraded JHM internals as I'll be going stage 1 or 2 if I figure this cam fiasco out. currently I am more worried about the piece of metal floating around in the engine.

Thanks for the info guys, I talked to the service manager again.
Asked if I could get my timing belt changed without labor and he seemed to go for it, I'll take a look at a few more audi repair shops around the area... one of them told me they don't have the proper tool for the job....

So for right now it's $1600 with the addition of the timing belt change... part of me thinks that the best deal I'll find as I'll have to change my timing belt in 20k miles anyway.

anyhow I feel your pain with the concern on the chunks. I took off the timing cover, valve cover gasket and found nothing. So I just changed the oil and got a magnetic drain plug and hopefully I will catch them there. Axis posted a pic a while ago with chunks on his drain plug . That's actually what I am hoping for .. . I have even considered fastening some strong earth magnets to the bottom of the pain so if any pieces of follower make it there they stay there and not get in the oil pickup or screen.

That's what I was thinking aswell, but knowing their money grubbing ways it wouldn't surprise me they would've gone without if I hadn't asked.

I changed the oil as soon as I bought it with 77k miles, the plug I pulled out wasn't magnetic but the oil catch did seem to have a light trace of metallic flakes... went ahead and installed a magnetic drain plug as instructed by a number of forum posts so I guess we'll see here in a few 1000 miles.

Oh, gotcha. I'd replace the gasket if you're gonna take the valve cover off honestly. Also you'll get a much better idea of what's going on in there. Just looking at the single I take cam love through the port where the cam follower goes in isn't going to give you much of a view to see what's going on.

What are the symptoms of your problem? I just went through a lot of fuel pump/cel problems and worked them all out so maybe I can offer some insight.

I have the OEM internals from my HPFP I'd be willing to sell from when I upgraded my pump.
