Hey guys,
I have five cars right now I am deciding between. A little bit about myself:
32, male, always driven a conservative Acura TSX (no mods).
Commute to work is like 11 miles each way.
Plan on keeping my TSX if I get a S5 but possibly sell my TSX if I get a S4
No babies yet, just a wifey and no plans for a baby.
Would be fun to mod a S4 from all the threads Ive read in here.
My tsx is at 180k miles and its time to get a fun car for myself. Wife approved. :)
So these are the five im looking at and have already test drove.
Appreciate any feedback!!

2012 - for sure!!
But which one depends - you need to decide what options are important here - both being covered for some time - so that's not an issue
IF - you really want to mod - then the 68K fully loaded makes most sense to me - out of warranty - so no fear of TD1 - and the lower cost gives you room for mods - I've had ZERO issues with mine @63K - and there isn't many issues to be concerned about so with no worries on mileage - cost is the key.

i am going to say go with the 2012 with higher mileage. You only drive 22 miles daily. The car is CPO with warranty till 100k. You are not going to hit 100k by next year when it expires. You will have 5k to spend for mods right away.
What options is the lower mileage one missing? if advance key i would skip that one, that was a deal breaker for me.

I agree with the 2012 with 33K. RUN away from the 2010 S5s coupes. They have a 4.2 gas guzzler V8. IMHO, not a great engine. I had one on my B6 S4. The 3.0SC engine it so much better. However All S5 Cabs have the 3.0 SC engine. So if you really want a convertible, that would be an acceptable choice. You will not notice any difference driving an S4 vs an S5. I agree with selling the TSX. Once you start driving the S4/S5 Cab you won't want to drive the TSX any more. BTW, my 2011 has 65k miles on it. Running fine. I have only had to replace Brakes, rotors, battery and tires. It is my 3rd B8 S4, Bought it with 49k 2 yrs ago.

I had an '06 TSX and it was a competent car, but nowhere near the driving experience of an S4/5. The difference is astounding.
Are the '12s all automatics? If so, go for the lowest mileage possible due to possible high mileage repair cost. The sweet spot for me is a used car with less than 40K miles on it.

It's a tough call between the two 2012 S4's, myself I would opt for the higher mileage one. It comes down to what option are missing from the lower mileage one and what mods you want to do. If you plan on wheels then curb rash might be a non-issue. Myself, I would be too concerned about the dings, but that's me, I'd rather do some upgrades with that money. If the S4 isn't the daily driver you will probably put next to nothing on it and even if you do daily it, you still put pretty minimal miles on.
If immaculate condition, fewer options and lower miles is with the extra $4500 that is something only you know. But again getting the higher mileage S4 and going stage 2, intake, sways, short shifter might make for a very fun car for the same price out the door.

I agree that the lower mile 2012 S4 is the best of the bunch but....... you have a car now so be patient and wait for a car with the options you want. It appears there is nothing saying that you have to buy NOW!! In the grand scheme of things don't be afraid to spend a few extra grand to buy the right car either. After you locate the new car and get it purchased, I would sell the TSX.

Gotta stop you there. I have had a B8 S4 and a B8 S5. They get closer gas mileage than you think. I don't know why you wouldn't think he S5's 4.2 L isn't a great engine. Sure he S4 3.0T is MILES better if someone where to tune it, but not everyone does. Not to mention with all the DSG problems on a S4 if not under warranty anymore. They are a popping up a little more often lately.
I primarily use the S5 as a DD, combined with a AWE track exhaust it sounds UNREAL driving around town. But I'm a cruiser, I'm not racing around town & the 355 horses in the S5 4.2 is plenty for a DD.The ZF triptronic I have in my S5 is pretty zippy, I drive it 90% of the time in paddle mode & it snaps the shifts just fine. I find the DSG in the S4 a little "nervously" jerky when I drove in manual mode sometimes. But still a GREAT trans. But it's no surprise they are switching back to a triptronic in the B9 S4.
As for gas I can get 28mpg all day at 75mph. My fiancé can get 17-18mpg in the S5 driving around town which amazes me. I've get about 250 miles on a tank doing 95% city 10% highway driving in my 4.2 S5
Depends what someone wants. Some people like some decent HP with a V8 growl. Some people like 1/4 mile times. I'm actually a fan of a well or together 4 door S4 compared to a coupe sometimes.
If I can give ANY advice if you are getting a S4 with a DSG get one with a warranty. If I ever moved back to a S4 with a DSG it will 100% have a warranty only because of the DSG. It's a HELL of a expensive trans to fix most times. The fluid change is about $7-$800 at the dealer alone.

The only thing you didn't list is the interior. All leather is a deal breaker for me. I have to have the alcantara.
If both interiors are the same, enjoy the warranty for the next year+, take the extra money you saved in buying the cheaper car, and either have it wrapped another color, buy exhaust, new wheels, or whatever else you might want to do.

So if an S5 is in the consideration set then you don't need a rear seat or 4-doors. And if a cab is also in there I'm going to assume you aren't planning to take this to to Tahoe in the winter. If I am right on those fronts (?) and you are looking for a "fun car" for yourself, then why settle for a nose-heavy (and just plain heavy) AWD tank like the S5 or S4? Not understanding... [confused]
I vote same vintage Boxster S MT. Since it was brought up, playing devils advocate.
If you don't want AWD and maybe would want a nice throaty V8 with power in your price range. I'm about your age and I really appreciate a. v8 sports car with some power. Why not....
W204 C63 6.3L V8, coupe & 4 door flavor. 450hp stock tune able to 510 with the black edition tune?
E92 BMW M3 "drivers car" 415hp V8
E90 M3 my favorite same as above but aggressive 4 door look. There's a 2009 e90 near me with 39k miles & asking price is 30,000. Not bad if you ask me, there's temptation from me lol.
These are all for the most part close to the price range you are looking at. Just thought I'd throw a curve ball. I'm a Audi guy myself but there's other cool cars in your price range as well.

I've had a B6 S4 with the 4.2 V8. It was a gas guzzler. MY 335i was a better car with a better engine. You paid a GG tax on your S5 if you bought it new. Audi obviously felt that the 3.0 SC was a better engine since they replaced the 4.2 with it in 2013 and put it in the S5 Cab since 2009. I've heard many claims about getting good gas mileage on their S4s /S5s with the 4.2 engine. 22mpg on the highway, down hill , with the wind was the best I could ever get on the highway. Perhaps if you only drive 55 mph it COULD be possible to get better. But not for me in my car. BTW, doesn't the B8 S5 have the same DSG trans? If not, another reason not to get one. I'm not sure I would call the Tiptronic a "great" trans, but you can if you want. I have to admit the 4.2 V8 sounds really great with a cat back. But the 3.0 V6 sounds pretty nice as well. IMHO, both are not impressive in stock form. I do agree with you about needing a warranty. BTW, what part of PA do you live?

RS7 has a triptronic trans because DSG and torque problems & something about bolting to a V8. RS5 has a DSG BUT actually has 20lbs less torque than a b8 S5 with a 4.2, odd i know lol. B9 S4's also coming with a ZF trip, the "modern" triptronic is MILES better if that found in the older B5 S4's. That said the DSG is probably better but the newer trips are no slouch. Audi is aware or secretly aware of the DSG issues since they are doing away with the DSG.
I never buy brand new since I usually get a newer model ever 3 years or so. Too much depreciation on a new car for it to make sense with me. Don't get me wrong I love the 3.0T supercharged if he were to tune it.
I'm in Leigh valley PA. I love any B8 S4/S5 to be honest and always respect everyone's likes and dislikes. Not everyone's taste is the same.
I love my S5 for now until I get a itch to get something new. It's PLENTY fast for me as a DD 365 days a year in any weather in PA. It's a looker as a stylish coupe which is a plus how i have it tastefully modded. I get get multiple compliments per week & still pass the "look back" test when i park it & go into a store lol. And I can NEVER get enough of the AWE track 4.2 growl putting around town [drive]. The 3.0T S5 wasn't in my "budget" I had laid out when I got my 2010 otherwise I would have considered it. I'm the only S5 in my area I only see S4's. S5 3.0T's might have came down in price now but they will be over 30k i assume easily. . But the OP has to understand these aren't "cheap" cars to tune if he chooses so. Pulley, DSG, and stage 2 tune is multiple thousand. Just so he knows, most due however. That is just something to be aware of.
I wouldn't mind having a 3.0T S5, even though id miss the exhaust note. But to be honest if I traded my 2010 in for one it would feel like the same car lol. The way I drive I'm a cruiser, not a speed demon [emoji39]. I looked at a local c63 in mars red with the 6.3L V8 tuneable to 510hp mind you, and yes that is Naturally Aspirated. But the interior was really weak compared to my S5. Also looked at a 2011 M3 which was cool, e90 4 door too. But i still though my S5 had the "looker" appeal. And both of those are RWD.
Oh and as for that MPG, i drove to jersey yesterday 80mph there and back hour & a half trip. I shit you not i NEVER once seen the MPG on the computer drop under 24mpg. At 70-75 it was locked at 27 hitting 28 sometimes, i shit you not lol. I didn't manually calculate it however so i am sure the computer is not 100% accurate. I could EASILY get 300 miles a tank on a highway trip on my S5, i get 240-250 right now 90-95% with some spirited driving here and there with the fiance to even it out. I drive paddles 95% of the time as well. [wrench]
That said i think i am thinking about getting another B8 s4 for a second car for us. I still am a fan of the 4 door sporty cars for sure! I guess i am getting old lol though only 32, i used to be ALL about the power in my younger days and plenty of sports cars with that power.

Wow thank you everyone for the feedback.
11 votes for the 2012 S4 33k miles one
3 votes for the 2012 S4 68k miles one
2 votes for the 2010 S5 cab
NO votes for either of the 2010 S5's. lol
At least I know to narrow it down. Someone earlier asked why someone would buy a car at over 50k miles. I've bought my TSX at 70k miles and had zero issues up till now so I guess im comfortable with it but I understand Audi is whole other car that comes with its own issues.
Someone asked about the options:
2012 S4 33k miles one:
Exterior: Monsoon Gray Metallic• Interior: Black Interior
• Seven-speed S tronic transmission• Audi MMI Navigation plus
• Quattro w/sports differential• Silk Nappa leather interior
• 19" 5-segment-spoke wheels• Audi advanced key
• Rear acoustic parking sensors• Wheel lock kit
• 3.0L supercharged V6 engine (333hp)• S-specific sporty suspension & brake system
• ESC (Electronic Stability Control)• Sunroof with sunshade
• Three-zone Climate Control• Excellent Condition (both inside & out)
2012 68k miles one has every single option available.
Now i have two questions:
1. Someone here asked if they were alacantara seats. I believe they are both leather. I dont know what the alcantara seats look like on the audi. how can I tell?
2. How many miles does the S4 last? Ive had acura all my life so I know they can go 250k+ miles. What about S4's?
Thanks ya'll!!

I'd definitely go for the 2012 with 33K and CPO. Alcantara seats are traditional smooth leather on the bolsters and the center cushions are more suede-like. Although synthetic, Alcantara can look worn if not cared for properly. Good luck with your purchase.

C63? Comes in coupe or 4 door flavor. Best of both worlds 6.3L V8 sound with 451hp stock, with a Eurocharged Tuned Power 540HP / 494TQ, WHOOO! And man will it sound good. Although the interior is a bit "cheese" for the price of the car as it was a good bit more MSRP wise compared to a B8 S4 price and interior. And its RWD if that is a problem for you.

Another vote for the 2012 with 33K miles. That car, while not Prestige trim, has basically all of the options you need. Only sounds like it's missing the blind-spot monitoring, active lighting, and dynamic cruise/steering/suspension.
Here's what the Alcantara seats look like. It's the default option, so if the options list doesn't say anything about Nappa Leather seats, it might have them.

There's a Mars red one up the street from me 2010 with 64,000 miles for $27,900. I at LEAST had to go look at it lol. It's a lot smaller in person than you would think for a 4 door. My S5 coupe even looked next to it. Still a really cool car.

I'm trying bud! Been with Audi for a while & has never really done me wrong. Enjoy my B8 as a DD and its one of the nicer cars on the road around me & drives through PA weather 365 days a year without a sweat. I used to have a B5 S4, that's another story lol.
But MAN when I heard a 6.3L V8 C63 start up and roar & having 451hp stock and will get over 500hp with a tune, & yes that NA MB left LOTS of room on the table to not dumb down the c63 black edition.
But there's some negatives
B8 interior >C63
AWD B8 >c63 "for reliability of course"
Subjective look wise, c63 sorta blends in but it has wide body fenders and aggressive bumpers. I'd know one anywhere. And that glorious motor noise LAWD [emoji43].

This,
don't buy any of those S5's That engine while is good isn't very good. There all really no mods to make power with the V8 engine. unless you want to dump about 10K at once.
FYI, the S5 Cab DOES have the 3.0 SC engine.

The reliability of theses cars have been MUCH better than anticipated. But don't for a minute expect it to be as good as top end Japanese cars. 100k miles could be expected. But I would not want to own any German car without a warranty especially over 50k miles. These cars can be expensive to repair if and when they have problems. And they eventually will. I purchased my latest B8 s4 with 49k miles but also purchased a 3 yr extended warranty. Not a 100% coverage policy , but all the major components. In a yr I will need to add additional protection when it runs out.

Yes, All B8 S5 cabs have the 3.0sc engine. Doesn't make sense but that's the way it is. Maybe it should have been named a S4 cab like the B6 and B7 convertible.

But they don't, All S5 cabs have the same 3.o SC engine. Only 2013 and newer S5 coupes have this engine. 2009-2012 s5s have the 4.2 V8
