View Full Version : Throttle hangs at high rpms

I've had this issue since I bought the car a year ago, and it drives me nuts. Under hard acceleration (typically in the 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd shifts) and winding up to 5000 rpms or more, I let off the throttle, and the rpms just stay there for at least a second. What ends up happening, is I end up pushing the clutch in, momentarily causing the buzz (because I'm disengaging it at 5000rpms) of awful premature wear. It's taking away the fun of my 0 to 60 romps.
When I test it, wind it out, and just let off the throttle, I'm amazed at the wait for the tach to drop. I should mention too that it's intermittent, about 20% of the time it doesn't happen.
So my questions as to the cause, has me considering the throttle body or a clutch switch. I understand the older cars had issues with clutch switches, but I don't think this has anything to do with it. The rpms stay up when the throttle is off, nothing to do with the clutch being depressed, so, that leads me back to the throttle. It's a lazy throttle body.
I suppose I should start with a throttle body adaptation, but was too cheap to pay the dealer $100 for it on my last visit. And, to be honest, I'm not really sure of what the adaptation does. I assume it resets and learns "all the way open, all the way closed"?
Anyone else heard of this? Ideas?

Edit: my response refers more to the rpms hanging up during quick shifts.. But not sure if a the clutch delay valve has something to do with it?
I've been having this "issue" for a while now, but figured out how to minimize it. I experienced it with my MY 09 S5 and current B8.5 S4.
It seems like there are 2 ways to avoid it. 1 - change the way you shift. You'll need to try to start letting out the clutch just a bit before hammering the throttle between shifts. It usually results in shifting slightly slower until you get the hang of it. 2 - get the USP stainless steel clutch line. I don't have one yet, but will get one eventually. Based on reviews it seems to fix the problem since it bypasses what is likely the cause of the problem.. a clutch delay valve of some sort.

Thanks tin. I'm already changing the way I shift, waiting a little, putting the clutch in later, but it certainly doesn't seem right to me.
I'll read up on the stainless clutch line. I still don't understand why the rpms "hang" when I'm off throttle and clutch not yet depressed.

I have a similar issue with my DSG. A number of times, while in dynamic mode and letting DSG do the shifting, the revs hang for several seconds after I get off the accelerator after passing a vehicle. Very unnerving. It doesn't seem normal to me, but this is my first DSG transmission, so don't know.

Same happens to me (DSG). It feels like its "normal" basically like its waiting for me to get back on throttle but it waits a bit too long for my liking too.

^^ this. not sure why or how to replicate it but on rare occasions I've been like WTF? and by the time I shift manually again or do something it's resolved. I initially thought it was a bug in the DSG Tune but I've seen stock vehicles do this too so I don't think it is.

I've been posting about this issue since my first 2010. Had the same issue on my 2014 and now on my 2011. All 6MTs. However, I have noticed it mostly when turning and shifting at the same time, Rarely with straight line acceleration. I don't think there is anything "wrong" with the car. I think it has something to do with how the throttle is mapped. Just wondering if it does the same in Dynamic as in Auto or Comfort if you have the sport dif. I've learned to live with it. Don't like it, but no fix that I know.

At least for DSG owners you can manually shift out of it. I have found it happens pretty much every time I hit it hard from either a stop or relatively low speed in Dynamic. There is definitely a sweet spot with rev hang IMHO and this is not it. As others have said, annoying but somewhat tolerable if you learn to expect it and plan for it. (I find that driving in manual mode feels faster than dynamic anyway). My last car had rev hang similar to my stock S4 and it got better as it "learned" after getting an exhaust and reducing back pressure. Wonder if the same would apply here.

Lets be clear here, I do not think the same thing is happening with both the 6MT and the DSG trans. They both may have issues but I believe they are different.
