View Full Version : Installing Test Pipes a worth while mod?

Hey all,
I haven't been able to find much info on this and I am hoping you guys can help me make a decision. I've had good experiences going catless in the past but those where on turbo cars. Bmw n54/n55
I would have a shop do the install which makes this an expensive mod. (heard it's a 6-7 hour job) I know it's not a good power to $$ ratio but is it worth extracting the extra power and getting a more raw sounding exhaust note? (that is something this car has been lacking for me)
I have the borla exhaust and thinking I may need resonated downpipes but willing to see how loud it is first.
Ive been running the chipwerke for a while but about to install the cts pulley and make the switch to Epl.
Any input would be helpful...

Unless you're cats have gone bad, I wouldn't bother. Everything I've seen say there's zero gain. Pretty well anything do with exhaust including headers does not provide much in terms of additional power on these cars. I'd spent the cash on that sexy carbon intake ECS is selling - mooo cho want!

These are NOT the best sounding engines with test pipes. Incredibly raspy. I'd be lying if I said I didn't notice a moderate power gain though.

What exhaust are you running with the test pipes?

Thanks for the feedback guys. That intake does look niice! Before I had the borla exhaust I did the x pipe mod and it was pretty terrible. Wonder if it would sound that bad but louder? Haha 😂

I have the borla exhaust but realize I may need resonated downpipes!

If you're after power don't bother. If you want your car to be racecar loud then go for it (listen to apr's race car, it'll be a little quieter than that but along those lines lol)
I only track/ race mine so I did it for the added theater but if it were still a daily I'd stick with a resonated catback.
It makes some unpleasant frequencies at 70mph esp without rear mufflers on my awe track.. just the nature of this motor in 7th gear to create drone... Can't go above 65 without losing my sanity when I drive to the dragstrip! But when I'm driving spiritedly I've gotten nothing but compliments on how great it sounds paired with the awe track

I'm after power and added sound but don't want it to be super unpleasant to drive everyday. I do have a 6MT but the Borla has non res downpipes, wondering if it will sound bad. I don't want to have to change the whole exhaust. On the other hand if there is not much hp to gain maybe I'll just get a awe track!
