View Full Version : Dannydyn's Build (AKA screw it, I'm keeping the car so it's time to MOD!) thread...

So I've had my S4 close to 2 and half years now. It's a lease that's about to end this coming December. Given that Audi has discontinued the 6MT option for 2017, I was left searching for my next manual car, but came up empty handed. There's just nothing in the S4 price range that comes in stick and AWD. I guess a 335xi would be a close second, but they are a dime a dozen around here.... just another bimmer. This made me realize that there's nothing really wrong with my car, so why not keep it? I mean I absolutely LOVE everything about. It is equipped exactly how I want it and has a stick. So.....
....LET THE MODDING GAMES BEGIN!!! Here she is in all her stock glory.... dirty and unattended to. I haven't had a chance yet to give her a thorough spring detailing session and some much deserved TLC. After all, we're about to spend the foreseeable future together, so that's about to change...[:D] First thing first though, I have to give a shout-out to both SilveR316 & BirdmanQ5 for the inspiration. Both of you guys have done some awesome things with your Estoril Blue S4s, and I hope you don't mind if I stole a couple of ideas [o_o]

First thing first.... those ugly 18" rims have to go. I have roughly 25% thread left on them, so I'll just use them as her winter boots, and will swap the rubber with some Blizzaks when the time comes. Until then, I just surprised her with a set of Avant Garde M590 19x9.5 ET40 in Gunmetal finish, wrapped in Dunlop Sport Maxx 255x35x19. These pictures don't do them justice. That color is just perfect, different shades under different lighting conditions [cool] I just need to get a wrench and some wheel locks, and on they will go. Hoping to get them mounted at some point this week.

But yours will look great, looking forward to updates.

Well fellas, it's been a whole day, and the first mod has gone on. Wheels up!... How do you say 'it needs a drop' in German? LOL....
I thought for sure my next big mod will be exhaust, but that will have to wait, as the car needs to be dropped badly. I feel like I'm driving a monster truck.
Up next.... H&R springs and RS4 grille. Stay tuned.... [:D]

I would not say it needs a drop bad... but a drop would help. 19's look ok on oe height... 20's don't... If doing springs i highly recommend doing proper upgraded shocks as well.

Thanks guys. I don't plan on doing any crazy driving or tracking the car. I would like to lower the car for pure aesthetics, nothing more. Can you please elaborate on why you think a full shock setup would be desired?

I think it looks good for now. Forget the drop and go for the exhaust. I might go that size wheel and offset and leave it factory height.

Id do exhaust before drop also.
Reason you dont want to only do springs alone is that you will end up with a bouncy ride. Oem shocks also may fail prematurely...

I agree with the suspension thing. Most people will learn once by only doing the springs. After that it's do it right the first time because it's cheaper and better.

In Somers. Northern Westchester. Eurotech is definitely closer (barring tapzee traffic[headbang]) but so far I've been talking with guys at XLR8 and they have been great in trying to work out a mod package for me. Rennsport in Bedford Hills is like 15 min from me, and I've read a few things on here promoting them, but they seem to be more Porsche skewed and more expensive as well.

Yea true! I'm working on a package with them now to do OE springs, awe track exhaust (I like loud) and M590 is satin silver. Same wheels lol, may not wanna drive next to me hahah. That being said, there is a fantastic cars and coffee a few towns over from me in Yorktown on Sunday mornings. Gets crazy packed. Need more audis. Oh snap! Now we REALLY should head there together! Yeah, I need OE springs, Bilstein B8 shocks, brake pads swapped (can't take that squealing anymore), and last but not least - AWE Touring (keeping the stock pipes).

I don't mind a little road trip as long as the price is right and the job is done right. I'd rather drive farther once than 3 times to a nearby location because they fucked it up. Not saying the other places you mentioned are bad (I honestly have zero experience with any of them), but Exeler8 seems to be getting raved, so I might give them a shot. I just shot them an email with a few questions and a quote request, and I'm waiting to see what they can do.
BTW, what are you planning on doing with the stock exhaust after it's removed? I'm going to see if they can cut it, so I can haul it back home with me. Always good to keep if/when it's time to put it back into stock form.

I actually asked them what they suggest for the OEM exhaust. I say likely cut it. I always keep my stock parts, bc eventually I get bored and move on to another car and sell the aftermarket parts. I probably wont bother removing springs for a trade in eventually because it costs more than they do just for the work. Ive never paid a shop to do exhaust or suspension work, always did myself. but I feel weird taking a wrench to this car, and much better about sipping a coffee and reading the newspaper while its done right.

Disclaimer: I really am not that reckless usually. I consider myself a pretty calculated individual…. But this car is just too good not give attention to….
So being the impatient clown I was yesterday, I decided to tackle the RS4 grille on a weeknight. This really is a weekend type of a project, but that grille just sat there staring at me, begging me to mount it…. LOL
Anger level 1: First, let me just say that removing our front bumper is a serious PITA, especially if you’ve never done it before, don’t have stands/ramps/lift (I used a floor jack but that was not ideal), and don’t have someone with you to help. By the time I managed to get the damn bumper off the car I was in serious distress and worried that I just won’t be able to put it back on the car. I’m sure if you’ve done it before, it’s probably not as big of a deal the second time around, but for a first-timer, this was quite the task… and the location of some of the bolts…. Ugh!!
Anger level 2: After finally getting the bumper off the car, I realized that for some goddamn reason, the bracket that holds the Audi rings onto the RS4 grille, won’t attach to (stay on) the grille. At this point I was fuming... I just spent an hour fighting with this bumper to get it off the car, just to hit a dead end. I sent a message to the guy who sold me this grille (eBay, yeah…. I know), but got crickets back (he was very prompt with another question I had earlier in the day). At this point I was sure that guy screwed me by sending me a defective grille. Given the fact it was 9pm at that point, and I needed the car this morning so I can get to work, I had no choice but to put the whole damn thing back together. I was beyond pissed.
Anger level 3: So it’s now close to 10pm, the bumper is finally back on the car, I get inside the house, hop on eBay and initiate a return request. (Reminder: I’m an impatient moron on a random Wednesday night) and without waiting for a response, I hop on ECSTuning.com and order their grille instead. I go to sleep…. Fast forward to 3:30AM…. I wake up to take a piss and on the way check my phone. There is a message from the seller telling me that the Audi rings have to be attached to the bracket first, before the bracket is attached to the grille. In other words, supposedly those rings hold the bracket in place, attached to the grille – ARE YOU FCKING KIDDING ME?!?!? You couldn’t have said it earlier when I messaged you in the middle of the day telling you that bracket appears to not hold on the grille?!?!? UGhhhhh!!!! So now I have to go back and try it again, which is in and of itself was a given because there’s no way I was going to stay with the stock grille, but to make matters worse, I now have a second grille inbound to me…. FML.
At least I got a chance to PlastiDip the front crash bar, so that’s out of the way….
Also in other news, I decided to listen to some of the smart people here, and will be adding Bilstein B8 shocks to pair up with the H&R OE Sport springs.
Stay tuned for updates….

Sully, I actually got a quote back from Exelr8 (below). That’s a lot of dough, and I think the suspension work will have to wait, at least the brakes. My brakes are not shot but the squealing is beyond embarrassing at this point. I think the pads will have to wait. I have springs inbound from TireRack, which I found at a better price. As far as where to do the job, being in Stamford I’m right in between the two places, with Mahwah being 7 miles closer, but that’s a tossup. I’ll go wherever I get a better deal. With that said, you mind messaging me Danek’s contact info? I would like to compare numbers.

Ill be honest here. If you go H&R OE springs you do not NEED to change the shocks. I had H&R OE drop for 55k miles and never had a single problem even on HPDE days, etc. Keep in mind I also had all of the Eurocode suspension parts but never had to change shocks and mine never leaked or needed replacement.

I was back and forth myself about this, but for my driving (mostly to and from work) I concluded to go with just the OE's myself. getting em installed and an alignment with a new AWE Track exhaust whenever the exhaust arrives at EurotechMS.

Best shop in the area. HANDS DOWN.
Ive been going to them for the last 6 years now. Since they were in a tiny shop. Great guys over there. I even take my Benz there now (and my wife's A3 and parents cars)
I am so meticulous about cars and I cannot rave about them enough.

I would get the drop done and then wait a few days for it to settle and then go back in for an alignment. Thats what I did and never had an issue.

Try bedding in your brakes. If you do it right the squealing should stop for a long time. I had it bad and then did a legitamate bedding in the brakes and pads on my S4 and never had the issue again. If it doesnt work after doing it I would then invest in pads.

I reapectfully disagree.
I also ran HR OE's for about 10k miles thinking it was OK. It began to get increasingly bouncy so I decided to upgrade the shocks. Huge huge improvement. I didnt realize how bad it was. it improved just about every dynamic aspect of the ride... acceleration, braking, curves, absorbing bumps... well worth the few extra hundred bucks. If you do the shocks at the same time as springs it wont cost any more in labor.

Oh I got to that part alright. As a matter of fact I ran into an issue separating the stock grille. I got stuck at the upper corner and was afraid I was going to break the damn thing. At that point, it was getting late, I still couldn't figure out WTF is wrong with the rings bracket on the RS4 grille, so I didn't bother continuing... I had 90% of the stock grille separated, when I said screw it, did a 180, and went back to assembling everything back to stock.

I just went through this the other night when swapping in my black optics grille. All of the clips around the bottom came disengaged easily enough, but there were two real bastards on the sides, near the top, that were being stubborn. And when they would come partially disengaged, the very top clips would snap back in. I had a set of plastic interior trim removal tools which I used to wedge between the top clips to keep them disengaged, then I actually used a wide flat-head screw driver to force those buried side clips near the top to disengage. It was a pain in the ass and I though I was going to break something every step of the way. I do not remember the grille on my old B8 being nearly as difficult to remove.

Love it! Great looking car, love the color, and the wheels look perfect! Personally, I don't think you need a drop, but I'm perfectly happy with mine at stock height.
Are the B8 and B8.5 bumper/grille assemblies different? I have a 2011 and pulled my front bumper off in March and swapped the grille for a black optics grille by myself for the first time in under an hour... Hope it goes better for you with the next attempt.
Looking forward to seeing the rest of the build!

BTW, for what its worth, had a nice conversation with Danek over at Eurotech in Mahwah and I'm going to end up heading that route instead given proximity to where I live and the value he was able to provide.
XXSullyXX123, I have been going to Eurotech for over 5 yrs now. They are great. They are honest and continue to grow because of their service. Anytime you go in there, you'll see what kind of clientele they service... Always some of the most ridiculous high end cars in there.

Danny, your color coded bumper removal story had me chuckling!! Thanks for that!
I'm in North Jersey right outside manhattan. I"m running a setup similar to what you are going for. If you're ever in the area let me know! I'm also writing up a review on my latest mods. I'll shoot you a link when i'm done writing it up. Basically it's the change from just OE springs to OE springs and Bilstein shocks and the addition of the Ecode trans mount, and diff mounts. That coupled with the Ecode short shifter really changed the dynamics of my inputs to how the car reacted. It's all a very tight and super connected feeling. It almost makes the car feel more rear biased as I've found myself able to kick out the rear tires much easier now.
Also I went with stop tech cryo drilled brake rotors, and they look just great with minimal additional cost.

Hmmmm, i have a similar colored S5. Deep Sea Blue Pearl. I was settled on going with the AG m590's in satin silver as i thought it would be a nice contrast on the blue and show the wheel off better. But i kinda dig the clean look of the gunmetal on the blue. Nicely done [up]

Yeah, hopefully the second time around will go easier and faster. I just hope that damn ring bracket snaps onto the grille or else I'll lose it.

I'm actually going to be at Eurotech in the next few weeks to have an exhaust and suspension work done.
When the weather warms up a bit we should get a tri-state meet. I'm eager to meet many guys here in person. Sounds like a lot of good guys. Also, can't wait to hear your thoughts on the OE springs paired up with the Bilstein shocks.
Looking forward to it!

BirdmanQ5 has a setup like the one you've mentioned.... he has an Estoril Blue on AG M590 Bespoke in satin silver if I'm not mistaken (BirdmanQ5's build thread (http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/548498-BirdmanQ5-s-B8-5-Estoril-Blue-S4-(Pics-amp-Build-Thread))). While he went for the high contrast look (dark blue against bright silver), I kind'a like the more stealthy look you get from the gunmetal. But you really can't go wrong either way. I couldn't be happier with both the rims look and the size. I think they sit tightly flush with the fenders at 19x9.5 ET40, just perfect. Now, all I need is to drop it 0.5"-1.00", and that should complete the look.

I got this cool decal (measures 5”x3”) which I would like to slap on, but not sure where. My side window already has an AudiZine decal.
I was thinking on the trunk lid, on the right side of the license place, opposing the S4 badge. I think the white/red will provide a nice contrast over the Estoril Blue…. Thoughts?

Well fellas, it's been a whole day, and the first mod has gone on. Wheels up!... How do you say 'it needs a drop' in German? LOL....
I thought for sure my next big mod will be exhaust, but that will have to wait, as the car needs to be dropped badly. I feel like I'm driving a monster truck.
Up next.... H&R springs and RS4 grille. Stay tuned.... [:D]
Wheels look amazing. I think down the road those are the wheels I will eventually get.
Any difference in the way it rides, handles, accelerates, and/or brakes with the new wheels/tires? The only experience I have ever had was years ago when I got a set of alloys for my 2004 Silverado 2500HD with the 6.0 gas. I immediately noticed how much heavier the after market wheels were compared to the factory wheels.
Keep up the good work.

Car needs a slight drop. I agree it doesn't look like it needs any in the pictures, but trust me it needs a good 1" drop, especailly in the rear. LOL, you guys are funny. That's not my Z, I was merely the phogoraphyer. That Z used to belong to Willy Izaguirre.... I'm sure you know him if you are from the Tri-State area. I never owned a Z. I used to have a G35 coupe, and we used to have a lot of Z/G meets organized together. I took this shot at one our meets, at Cove Island Beach Park in Stamford. Looking to do some more of these with S4s.

Thanks bud. LOL, not really dangerous, but you have to be mindful when executing. Half of the work is to find a good location to serve as an interesting background. I like to use cityscapes for these shots, like a good, lit downtown area. If anyone is interested in meeting up and doing some of these at a good location, I'm all ears.

Was going to blackout the headlights and swap out the lenses with dimple-free ones, but ran into issues disassembling the guts of the headlights, so I chose to abort, rather than risk breaking something inside there. The blackout didn't go as planned either. I tried to use Plasti-dip, but it's really the wrong material for a delicate project like that. The difference in light disbursement is huge. The ZKW-R is like a laser beam compared to the scattered light you get from the stock lens. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough room in my garage to back up more to illustrate that difference. I was literally glued to the garage door in the shot below...
Left one is stock, right side is ZKW-R

ECS claims gain with a tune, not so much stock. I am stage 1 and just installed the same intake. Feels smoother, maybe better pedal response...if that. Just feels like it breathes better, but nothing that will make the butt dyno pucker up.

Tough to tell. I bought them used and they have some light chips and scuff marks. I also managed to bend one of them already when I hit a hidden step in the road (construction site)... Ugh.
But the bend is small, not felt during driving, and isn't letting any air out, so I'll just wait for the winter to have it fixed and the whole set refinished.

Good luck! I got to warn you though: the chrome paint around the LED bar strips off very easily. I didn't realize how poorly it's baked on, and managed to strip some of it when I peeled off the masking tape. I now have to go back and fix it somehow. Probable end up wrapping it.

Unfortunately I was not. I messed around with the trim pieces, trying to separate them for about half an hour before I gave up. I figured I should stop before I break the damn thing and be forced to buy a whole new headlight.
As a result, I had to paint the outer shall of the shroud as one piece, which meant I had to mask the LED bars. When I went to remove the masking tape, it stripped some of the fake chrome stripes that surround the LED bars. So now I'll be going back in there and vinyl wrap those strip in 'white aluminum' (silver metalic). I think it will look and stand out better than the stock fake chrome.

I got a couple of PMs asking me to take some shots of the headlights under better lighting conditions. I got a few of them taken this evening. I was in a rush and didn't get the look I was going for... the car is filthy as f#$$% and those rims are really gunmetal, not black (thanks Audi for the OEM pads)... [rolleyes] I'll give it another shot (no pun intended) next week, after it gets a drop and exhaust. Need to polish her too. [;)]

Not brave, just stupid [emoji13] it's hard being a car guy(or gal) in a major city, but you figure it out. My car is garaged and only driven on weekends... I'd love to drive it more but at least I've got it!

I've accidentally curbed both my back wheels but, neither are even half that bad.
When I switch out to my winter set I will be getting them repaired and powder coated [wrench]

I did it to mine twice in the last 4 weeks. Only one wheel though (rear passenger). AG said I could get a custom one painted and sent to me for around $500.

I got a quote from a local shop.... $600 to refinish all 4. I'll just have to live with this eyesore for now, and tackle this project when I switch to winters.

Looks good!
Are you leaving the mirror caps aluminum? I have a deep sea blue pearl S5, which looks similar to estoril in certain lighting. And i have been kicking around the idea of getting my trim done in black. I already have the all black RS5 grille as well. That would leave the front bottom lip aluminum and the mirror caps. I think it will still look good to break up everything. Just curious what you are doing. There is always the option of getting carbon mirror caps but they are $400 for a nice fitting set from ECS, which is steep for what they really are. I mean its just for looks.
Also not sure if i missed it, but did you do satin black or gloss?

Thanks. Definitely leaving the mirrors as is. The aluminum mirrors are signature mark of the S line.
Used a gloss vinyl.

Thanks Danny I was on the fence wether to use gloss or satin. I originally thought satin would match the black windshield trim better that's on each side. But I thought gloss would look nice as well.
I'd probably leave the mirrors as well although you can get S4's with body painted mirrors if you get the black optic package from the factory.

I chose to use gloss because of simple personal preference. I think it looks better. The BO package is gloss finish as well.
As for the mirrors, the fact the mirrors come in body color WAS the reason why I didn't want it. [emoji3]

Hi Danny,
Love the car! You're one of the reasons I went with an Estoril Blue S4! I'm taking my car next week to wrap the window trim and diffuser in Satin Black. However, I'm interested in changing the Side Skirts to aluminum. Did your car come like that? Or did the vehicle come like that?
