Tire Selection Recommendation

Hello,

Currently have Evo2's and need to replace all tires. has anybody gone from the Evo2's to the Pilots? Are they worth the extra cash? I dont track the car and I just do some spirited driving once in a while.

My Porsche/Audi shop recommended Continental ExtremeContact DW to me for my S4. Moderately priced but excellent summer-only tires that they regularly put on tracked-Porsches and blow the OEM tires out of the water - not that that's hard to do.

DiscountTireDirect was running a $100 back for every $400 spent on tires. Just bought a set of 4 last week for $612 total after shipping, saved 100s and couldn't be happier with the tire's performance. I have yet to manage to break them loose!

Either way I recommend calling DiscountTire and asking a rep for their best price that will pull you away from TireRack. The reps have a lot of freedom with prices especially if you mention their rival. Good luck.

If you do some searching here you will find that the PSS is hands down the recommended tire. I just had my local Discount Tire order a set of PSS 19" for my car and they will show up today. After a little pushing on my part I got a price "out the door" for $987.

PSS are loved on this forum. I went with the Bridgestone Potenza Pole Position S-04 because they were much less expensive but the reviews on tirerack are really good as well. Many other people like the Evo2.

I have PSS's on my S4 and DWS06's on the wife's A3. There is no discernible difference between these tires. they're both great.

Factoring in overall performance, price, reputation and testimonials the best summer tire is the PSS.
And the fact that the PSS has a 30k treadlife warranty makes it a very tough tire to beat.

Yes the PSS seem to be the tire of choice. But they are pricy upfront cost. I have a friend with the Conti's DW on his A4 awd. Ill see how they go. The Discount tire direct guy recommended them to me too. But I went with the BFG sport comp 2's I had them before with my eclipse GST not awd but I had good feel for them. But then again I was young and dumb back then. They probable won't be as good as the PSS but for the money under 800 shipped it was 400 difference in the PSS and what I got. I was hesitant with going with Conti's again after the bad taste of the OEM tires. Ill let my buddy try them out and ill see what he thinks before I go with them next time.

My only issue with the PSS is that the tread isn't is bland and doesn't scream sexy like others tires IMO

Don't get the PSS, look at either the Continental DW or Bridgestone S-04. the are right behind the PSS in performance testing and are a LOT cheaper. after spending the money on the PSS already, I wish I hadn't and gotten the bridgestones myself. the PSS are nice, but are NOT worth the cost differential. I will not be getting them again.

I run the S-04's as well. They can be bought through Costco with a $70 off Bridgestone coupon from time to time.

I have a set of the Evo2 (assuming you are referring to the Hankook Ventus V12 Evo2) on ym 350z. I am fairly unimpressed with the tires. The grip is not very good IMO, especially in the wet. In fact I prefer the Conti ExtremeContact DWS that are currently on my S4 over the Hankooks on the 350z. Two different animals, I know, but I probably would not buy the Hankooks again.

EDIT: I considered buying the Bidgestone S04 a couple years back when I was shopping summer tires for the S4, but ultimately went with Mich. PSS because the S04's were quite a bit heavier in comparison. I sprung for the more expensive PSS to keep rotating weight down.

I have run PSS's on my past two S4's (in 265/35/19). I burned through the stock Conti Pro Contact 3's at ~9000 miles and that put me off the brand which is when I went PSS. Probably why they are cheaper than the PSS. The P04's are 5lbs heavier each than the PSS's, so depends if that is a factor for you vs the cost savings. I easily got 4 summers out of my set of PSS's on my B8 and am now on a fresh set on my B8.5.

I think I will go with them, even without knowing the difference of going from the Ventus Evo2 to the Pilots, its a better deal anyways. Also, my tire shop told me that since I have a quattro car I need to change all four tires because there is a 2mm plus tread difference between the tires (Front: 4, Back: 7). This whole mess started because one of my rear left tire literally blew up and can't be repairable, so now I have change them all for the reason stated before. Is this true?

TireRack will shave a new tire to match the overall tread depth, but I do not know if other shops have the same service. You are sort of on the fence since the fronts are down to 4mm.

Depending on your budget and driving style, you could probably get another 6+ months out of your current setup if you have the new tire shaved down to 7mm and then put that pair on the front.

The people at the tire shop are correct; you want the all the tread depths to be close. You would probably be fine running 7mm in the front and 4mm on the rears. It appears that your fronts wear much faster (lots of tight turns?) so the spread will likely shrink pretty quickly.

I've run PSS on other cars. They are great, but arguably a bit over hyped and expensive.

I wanted to try something new. I now have had the evo2's on the S4 for only a few weeks. So far, they are great. A little softer at turn-in than the PSS, but great grip. But I think they ride better/quieter. And they were $680 OTD after rebate (255/35-19)! They may not perform quite as well as the Michelin at 10/10ths, but I don't drive at 10/10ths often/ever and for my 8/10ths style, they are perfect. Treadwear is supposed to be excellent, so we'll see. Can't be worse than the Contis!!

Yeah if you have the extra cash to put towards the PSS you will be happy you did. There are other really good cheaper tires as well.

Just bought a set PSS from DiscountTires. They are actually cheaper than TireRack. They even matched the lowest price from the web including tax for a new HRE wheels.

PSS feels and grips a bit better when pushed, no doubt. PSS [up] V12[down]
V12 wears much longer. I'd say >50% longer. PSS [down] V12 [up]
PSS is louder, especially past 50% wear. PSS [down] V12 [up]
V12 is cheaper up front (and see wear above). PSS [down] V12 [up]

Final tally:

PSS [up][down][down][down] -2
V12 [down][up][up][up] +2

The V12 definitely qualifies as a "good" tire and is not "crazy". The $ saved on price and wear over the PSS are pretty huge, especially if you do a lot of miles. You have to really value ultimate grip and feel (and spend a lot of time pushing the limit) to make the PSS worth the cost, imo.

Im going with Evo2's because, while the PSS ARE better, they ARE NOT worth double the price. I would go with the S-04s but they are 3lbs heavier per tire.

I've run PSS on other cars. They are great, but arguably a bit over hyped and expensive.

Have to agree here. I've run SO many michelins, all great tires but overall they're no better than the great tires that are 1/2 the cost.

If anyone is looking for a crazy good summer tire that is dirt cheap, I cannot recommend the Kumho Ecsta SPT enough. I was blown away.

I'm going to be putting on PSS next week. Can't wait to finally be back with Michelin on my wheels. Have had nothing but flawless performance and joy from them. They are more expensive but they lead the pack not just in terms of performance but in terms of quality overall. Better balanced and consistent from a production standpoint. I would use the analogy of the STi vs S4. both are great and capable but I'm not going to pinch a few hundred bucks when everything in the S4 is riding on them. The best for the best.

There's a reason that Pilot Super Sports are expensive yet often f'ing sold out and on national backorder, it's because they are the best all around street performance tire period. Quiet and not obnoxious on the street, great grip for the treadwear rating, decent life compared to some other super aggressive street tires, and they hold up to track day use without falling apart.

What about the contisportcontact 5P? I've heard they're great. Expensive but great. I love the handling characteristics of the stock contis when they're in good form. The 5P apparently lasts longer and was designed to beat the PSS. Had the PSS myself and was underwhelmed.

Whatever you do, do not buy Yokohama Advan Neova (just eddited, as I had the wrong brand). They are extremely noisy. Waiting for mine to wear out and will never come back to that again[:(]

Last minute change, tirerack will shave and ship a Ventus evo2 by Monday and will get it Tuesday, I guess I will be staying with the Hankooks. Will be definitely getting the PSSs when I need them.
