View Full Version : Threw My First CEL at 3K Miles
I was on the way to work this morning about a half mile away from my house and my light went on. I pulled over and checked the gas cap, which wasn't tightened to the click, so I tightened it until I heard a few clicks. Turned off the car, and then started it again, and nothing the light was still on. Drove the rest of the way to work and then let the car sit for an hour or so and then I strted it again and the same thing. Now i'm really pissed off, so I call my Audi dealer and schedule an appointment and they tell me the next available day is in 3 weeks. They said it shouldn't be a problem and they'll get it all worked out when I bring it in. Well leaving work I decide one last time to check the gas cap, I take the whole cap off and then put it back on and after about a minute or so on the road it shuts off.
I can't believe how sensitive these cars are to such little things like the gas cap not being closed all the way. Hopefully that was the only problem and the light doesn't come back again tommorow.

I think most cars will throw a CEL if the gas cap isn't fully tightened and it takes a few shut downs and start ups for the CEL to go away.

How are you so sure it was the gas cap though?
Well I figured with 3k miles on the car it shouldn't be anything major, and I also figured that it was worth a try to just check it out being I really couldn't diagnose it by looking into the engine bay.

That good ol' gas cap. I once paid the dealership $150 bucks for them to tell me my CEL was most likely the gas cap. [headbang]
Well thanks to the good ol' gas cap i'm getting my 5k mile service about 1k miles early. Kinda nervous to see what their going to say about the suspension[=(]

Definitely let us know what they say about it. I got lucky. I called to schedule mine and the guy on the phone at the dealership was great. He and I spent about 20 minutes talking about all the mods out there for the car and which were the best and then later he told me that if I'm ever bringing in a modded car, to give him a call and he'll make sure things go smoothly. Makes me happy [:D]

If the CEL is simply due to a loose gas cap, shouldn't it clear itself after a few cold/hot cycles? that's the way it works on my Jetta and Touareg (ya, yah, I know; those aren't Audis... [:p])

Yes it clears itself after a few cycles (and it apparently did), but from my understanding he's already made his appointment and is still going in to have it checked out.

LOL. I need to learn how to read. Missed the part about it clearing itself.

maybe you could stop by autozone and get scanned? thats what I always did with my b6 when the dealer gave me the 2 week wait...
Well it's gone as of now (knock wood) so i'll leave it be as of now and wait for the dealer to check it out.
