View Full Version : Clicking/Ticking First ~2 Seconds of WOT Acceleration

Title says it all. Ever since I purchased the car, I have noticed a clicking/ticking noise when accelerating from a lower rpm. If I'm at 2k rpm and go WOT I can hear a clicking noise for about 2 seconds then it just goes away. I don't really feel any hesitation when this happens.
On the side note I am using the correct octane fuel (premium 93), and BKR7E's gapped at .028. I have no idea if this clicking noise has anything to do with preignition or detonation, or if is the effect of another issue. The noise doesn't occur if I lightly ease on the accelerator, nor do I hear it at higher RPM's. Also, the noise doesn't occur randomly when cruising; it only happens when the change from a lower engine load, to a higher engine load (wot) occurs; the issue is load dependent.

I'm pretty sure that i have the same problem. I primary hear the sound when accelerating from a stop for the first 2 or 3 seconds. Not able to reproduce the sound in (park or neutral), engine must have some sort of load. I was thinking it could be the timing chain & tensioner or possible excessive carbon build up.
If anyone has some input on this it would be great. Been trying to figure this out for awhile now.

It sounds like maybe some chain slapping. Im going r&r my cam chain tensioner soon, maybe it will fix the sound.

Have you looked at any of your knock PID's using a scan tool?
Verify there isn't any actual spark knock before spending any money, could be a quick fix...

Does your car burn oil? Is your oil level low when you notice the ticking? mine seems to only tick when im atleast half a quart low.

I will have to check those knock values. It happens constantly between 2400-3000 rpm when load is high. Ill have to check for smoke, but i dont really see anything.
I always maintain my oil levels at max, and the car really burns oil when i push it hard, and even then it only burns a quart every 1k miles.

Wastegate chatter?
Damn never thought about that. Any simple tests i can perform to figure out if it is loose?

Sounds like it could be pre-detonation. Ive been having the same issue thanks to a leaky turbo.
Ive been chasing my consumption issue for months now and finally threw in the towel. Took it to a shop and found out that my turbo its whats been drinking all the oil, and as a result causing some pretty bad pre-detonation.
Have you pulled of your intercooler lines to see how much oil is in there? You might have the same issue I do

I'm pretty certain its pre-detonation. I have the same issue with my car once the APR tune is on. I have to run Torco accelerator due to our low octane fuel and even then it still happen sometimes but always at WOT. As soon as it starts I take my foot slightly off the gas for a second and it stops and then i go WOT and no more clicks. I think that split second gives the ECU time to adjust timing to kill the pings.
Would suggest you try switching off you tune (if possible) temporarily and pull some WOTs to see if the clicks stop. If it works you might have a low octane fuel prob (your 93 might not be 93?), or too much carbon on the cylinders causing higher than spec compression ratio. Just my 2 cents
