the Avant is going South... not on a road trip but for good...[:D]

i'll be moving to the Bay Area, most likely by the end of the month... so to all of you folks down there... be on the look out for the Avant coming near you soon... winter mode will be showing too...

so as you can imagine over the next couple of weeks, i'm gonna have sh!t lots of questions for you guys... [:D] hum yeah like i hadn't already started to ask some...

and well it just so happens i've got a couple of easy ones...

what's the legislation on tinted front windows, front license plates and front amber reflective lights?

As I said in the other Thread, it's going to be great to have ya here. Looking forward to meeting you, and seeing your beautiful Avant at GTGs and whatnot.

As for "legislation", I don't worry about it much. You're supposed to run a front plate and not have tint on the front three windows, but...

You shouldn't have much trouble with no plate and tinted windows.

same here Ant... looking forward to mingling w/ all the fellow Audi-ers down there.

as for legislation/regulation what i have to consider is that since it's an "out of state", i believe that in order to get it registered i have to go through an inspection... right?

Watch our for Mt.View. I've gotten a fix-it ticket for my front tints. Haven't had any problems w/ not having my front plates.

hmmmm...hooters. you'll definately love it down here, cant wait to meet you.

as for the legislation...it all depends on each city. here in dublin, i've never been pulled over for my front plates, tints, and not having any amber in my headlights.

Windows and plates might run you into trouble, but only if your doing something else IE failure to yeild or speeding - then the cops MAY issue a fix it for what they find.

Keep a low profile and youll be fine - welcome to NorCal!

Welcome to the Bay Area. Which neighborhoods/cities are you looking at?

Agree with other posters. In my case, I don't have a front plate but have body colored front reflectors on the M3. At worse, it is a fix it ticket.

Just don't park at LAX. I have heard that the parking lot police drive the lots looking to write no front plate tickets.

well....i kept my front plates on since another az member had a cop follow him home to his driveway to give him a fix it ticket for no front plate (he lives in san francisco)

it's $100 a pop i heard for no front plate...then again, that's in SF..

DMV will do an inspection when registering the vehicle. How closely will they will look, I don't know. I brought in a 2001 VW Golf, all stock from Hawaii and DMV did look over the car. If the tint law is still the same, 70% on the fronts is the legal limit. A front plate is required by law but many do not have them. So, you might want to fake it with velcro and screws some how. I don't know about the ambers.

The easiest way is just to zip tie it to the lower grill when you go in for inspection and then take it back off. Just roll down your windows for the tint.

Welcome to the Bay. What city will you be in? Enjoy the drive down...I've driven up to Vancouver before in the A4. I must say, the Oregon and Washington roads are MUCH better than ours.

As for registering the car...I would try to hold out on that as long as possible if your laws are more lax up in BC. That way IF you ever do get pulled over, you can say that the car is registered in BC and the tint/plate, etc laws don't apply to you.

Once you do decide to register, I would go with what Ben (shehatezme) says and just velcro on a front plate and roll the windows down for the tint. Maybe someone with amber lights can lend you theirs for the inspection. I would if I had an extra set, but I have a B5, hehe.

Welcome to the bay area, enjoy the great weather year round [:)]
And speaking of front plates, I have europlates installed, so far so good & I live in SF... knock on wood [;)]

thanks guys! [:D] [up]

as for the registration, i've got 2 weeks to do that from the time the car arrives in CA... beside in BC, front plates are mandatory and front windows should not be tinted either... [;)]

well since i've now switched to "winter" mode, here's how i'm gonna get around the front license plate:
http://images8.fotki.com/v148/photos/1/110342/757806/VIFrontLicensePlatecloseup-vi.jpg

you've got to love the euro filler... [:D]

as for the tint on the front windows, since currently only one is tinted following this little misap:
http://images14.fotki.com/v222/photos/1/110342/689225/ShatteredFrontPassengerWindow-vi.jpg

i might as well get the tint on the driver side removed and then get them re-tinted once i pass the inspection...

i guess that will take care of most of my concerns, w/ the exception of the amber reflectors... although i do have a set of round sticky ones in the glove box that i could just put on if it becomes an issue during the inspection...

well, not that i recommend this, but i have been running without plates for 2 years come Dec. when i bought my B6.....it started as a joke, aaaannndd, well, let's just say i've now set a new record.....course i keep my window reg. up, and the plates in the trunk.....was going to make my plate install a New Years resolution[:D] ....and thank the all mighty[hail] that i never got cited[:D]

besides, the front plate is a simple fix-it ticket that can be signed off.....last time i checked anyways
