View Full Version : Is it worth it? Carista OBD2 and App/Front Turn Signal Question

Hi All,
Call me crazy, but I think I maybe the only one who likes the 'wink' function on the LED's when your turn signal is on. I love the switch back feature and think it looks awesome. Turns my head on other cars. I have a 2011 S4 Premium and I'm pretty sure the previous owner disabled it.
He did enable other cool features not standard, but do you all think it's worth it buying the Carista product just to enable the wink? It's $40 on Amazon then I've read $20 for the licensing software. I may actually lower the LED brightness. I believe the previous owner set it to max.
I also wonder if the Carista App can enable 'winkling' where you can still have your headlights to on and still have the wink???
Front turn signal bulb questions: I've searched but have not yet seen if they have a turn signal that is dipped in chrome but still blinks Amber. I had this on my B6. I bought them through stealth bulbs. It's looks great when you clear your headlights. I've wrapped my Amber side markers but I still don't like seeing the orange bulb.
Thanks.

I just bought the carista dongle from amazon, it has allowed me to unlock the hidden menu via the mmi. Did silly things like activate the lap timer, oil temp etc, also activate the long press on the fob to put down/up all the windows.. I no longer have my laptop, so this is a great on the go alternative and check engine codes if so need it. Not to mention if you buy the pro version you can email them and have them send you the new beta version which allows you to reset the service reminder or service now. Yippie!

+1 for the app as well.
Bought it a while back to change a few things (such as disable the LED wink lol). The developer is usually quite active on the forums and is always taking suggestions on how to improve the app and add new features.
Keep in mind TorquePro is only $5 as well, both apps for $25 thats a steal of a deal considering what they can do together once you have the bluetooth dongle.

Thanks for the comments. The previous owner enabled some of the MMI features but not all. I like to disable the LED DRL when it's super sunny. I love being able to open and close the windows on my key fob, especially when I leave my sunroof open. Actually now thinking about it I may be able to switch off my fogs. The previous owner had the DRL and Fogs on together.

I like the app too, had it from the beginning. Like others said you can do the wink but you can't adjust brightness. The support here on AZ was good a while ago but it has faded dramatically. You can do quite a few other things with it. Worth it my opinion.

What's the button on the fob to open/close Windows and sunroof. I activated it yesterday in the app, but I can't get it to work via the fob. Tried holding unlock & lock etc. I thought it was just a long press on the unlock?

Search the play store for it on Android, should have mentioned that. It is not available on iPhone for some reason.
Its a diagnostic tool and can also set it up to use gauges like boost, coolant temp, rpm etc.

You have to enable it in the mmi. Car>central locking I believe. It is a long press.

Sweet thanks! The Carista app did allow me to unlock the hidden menu. The one with the green dos font you activate holding car/setup buttons together. That's at least where I enabled the oil temp, lap timer and such.
I still haven't found the service reminder reset. Not in the app or the hidden MMI menu, only had 20 mins yesterday to play with it. I believe they have to give me the link to the beta version? I though my I read that somewhere.

Is this and other OBD2 adapters just a cheaper alternative to the VAGCOM cable for basic functions?

Yeap the Beta allows u to reset service reminders and release the EPB for brake work on the rear wheels. EPB is a pay per use if ur using Carista free, but free if you have Carista pro ($20 one time cost)

I know it's different from 8 to 8.5. It's along those lines somewhere, pretty easy to find.

I actually just went outside and unlocked the window/sunroof down option. Had the car for a year now lol. I often forget to close the sunroof halfway walking inside the gym [headbang]. This is going to be unreal helpful now not having to walk all the way back, open the door yada yada. Between that, being able to reset the service soon reminder once they send me the beta version via email. And many other cool features. It's well worth the money along with the $20 pro upgrade. It's nice as its always with you so long as your phone is, if you get a check engine or have you if you aren't so close to home.

carista was worth it for me just for the oil temp/lap timer.

Well it's good to know I'm not the only one who likes the wink. I now have 3 things I want to do with the app. Enable wink, turn off foglight and just leave on DRL and if compatable have the side mirror tilt down when reversing.

What's funny is I bought the app solely to disable the "winking" because it drives me nuts.
Enabling the hidden menu, window controls and disabling the amber lights was just a bonus.
Also, I signed up for the beta. I didn't get any notifications but, it automatically got downloaded to my phone the next day.

Lol. Why does the wink drive people nuts? I think it looks cool switching from Amber to DRL. That's what the wink does right?

It turns off the DRL and flashes the turn signal.
I don't know why it drives me nuts. It always has... Perhaps it's my OCD [>_<]

Oh darn lol. I thought it flashes an Amber DRL? Haha. Like a switchback light. Can we get this for our Audi? I've seen them on other cars and Audis too I believe.
Just watched a video of the wink. I still think it looks cool the whole transition from turn signal to DRL.

The first time i noticed it in someones car reflection in front of me it did sort of bother me. At first i thought something was wrong lol. But i notice a lot of newer cars do the same. Personally if i can just turn it off in the app i prob would. Does "slightly" bother my OCD if i catch it in someones car reflection, i usually just look out the side window to avoid seeing it [:)]

I used Carista app to removed the wink, lower the windows and completely open the sunroof with the remote. There are plenty others customs feature that are interesting, errors scan feature and maintenance reset are a bonus. So for 20$us it's completely worth it.

Not worth the $$ for their adapter, IMO. I bought my wifi adapter off of Amazon. It's $14.99 now and works great!

I agree - much older models, 2009+ have had the actual lbs for each tire shows on the dash. This is helpful in cold weather and the air compresses its not as big of a deal than seeing the numbers drop every 1/4 mile, 36, 30, 27, 15..damn I have a real flat.

My friend has a wifi dongle and it's kind of wonky compared to my Carista BT one, it sometimes drops connection not sure if yours does. He has to reset sometimes. But either way I just wanted to make sure they would send me the beta invitation which allows you to reset your service light and you can use it on the rear electric parking brake for replacing the brake pads. Not sure if they were the beta to people if they were using their own dongle, probably though if you bought the pro app.
I thought about sending mine back and getting a cheap dongle since I paid for the pro app already & now on version 3.0 beta from 2.6. But honestly all that to get $20 back seems ehhh.

Mine has been bulletproof. I've used it probably 10 times, and on two different vehicles. They didn't discriminate on adapter type for the beta program.
