Hello all,

I just bought a 2007 A6 3.2 with 106,000 miles. I don't have any previous maintenance records, the car is getting some body work done and is not being driven at the moment . I have noticed that when I turn on the car and it is idling, it sounds a little rough. One of my friends said that the car needs new timing chain tensioners. My question is do I change only the top left and right tensioners, or pull the motor out and do the tensioners and chains all around?

Has anyone else done this, if so what did/would you do again?

Thanks!

If it is indeed tensioners, then typically its the top ones and both would need to be changed regardless if it's one or both sides that are bad. You wouldn't want to do the same job twice.

I'd suggest getting a second opinion unless your friend actually diagnosed the issue correctly.

Also, it can be done without pulling the engine. https://youtu.be/ZAWsKChptvU

Thanks for the info C@@kieMonsta, I'll get another opinion before a go any further with the tensioners.
