View Full Version : Bad MAF?

My 97 a4 quattro 2.8l won't start when cold unless you spray starting fluid in it. It takes quite a bit to start it but once it running and warms up, it runs fine. It will start up after that everytime once it's warm. No engine light. No backfiring or evidence it's flooding out. After researching it kinda sounds like a bad MAF sensor. Anyone ever have an issue like this? Why will it start everytime after its warm?

Before you replace your MAF you should buy MAF cleaner and use it as directed.

I tried to clean it today and it didn't help. I got a junkyard MAF but the housing is different so the sensor wouldn't fit in the hole. It has the same part number, just is a different shape. I might see if they still have the other housing.

Have you tried priming the pump a couple times before starting?

I put a new MAF sensor on and no change. It just won't start when it's cold unless I spray starting fluid in the intake. It will crank all day, like it's getting no fuel. Coolant temperature sensor maybe?

The fuel pump is priming when you turn the key on. It seems the injectors aren't working until it fires up. You have to let it idle for a few minutes after it starts. If you touch the gas peddle at all it will stall. Even after that it's rough when you push down on the gas peddle until it's completely warmed up.

Fixed. It was the coolant temperature sensor. Thanks for the advice everyone.
