Wrath And Tears

Decided to finally make one, so here it goes. My name is John, I'm a 26 year old European Specialist Automotive Technician. I graduated College of the Redwoods with a degree in Administration of Justice after having to drop out of the 108th Redwoods Police academy due to illness. My goal was to become a cop. Growing up my first interest was computers, with cars as a back burner as it was my dad's profession (he owns the shop I currently work at).

After graduating before moving to the next step I got a call from my mother telling me that two of my dad's tech's just quit and he was working himself to the bone. Having a strong sense of duty and what not I called him up and asked if he needed me to come down and help. That was three years ago. Besides some training with my dad, most of my experience came from the two years of auto shop I took in high school. Even with my limited knowledge of cars it put me light years ahead of the rest of the class, and the teacher recognized this. She would take extra time to help me because in turn I would help her by teaching some of the other kids and helping them.

Anyway that's just a little about me. Some other things I guess would be that I'm married, my wife and I started dating 7 years ago and got married last year. She is in grad school with the goal of becoming a forensic anthropologist / coroner / medical examiner (depending how much schooling she wants to do). My current goals are to keep studying for and taking my ASE certifications, as well as my dad has been training me to take over the shop in 10ish years. Now on to the car.

I don't name my cars as soon as I get them, I wait until our relationship has advanced to the point where the name comes to me. In her case it was Vikki. Edit: The original owner bought her from the local Audi dealership and took okay care of her. Unfortunately a tree fell on the drivers C pillar and did a lot of damage. Most of it got repaired well but the respray was done poorly, but well enough to last until I got her. The car was serviced at the dealer and then my dads shop until the owner declined the timing belt service, recommended early at 80k. At 90k the belt snapped and bent valves.

The customer sold the car to my dad who fixed it up and used it as his vehicle / an extra vehicle for the shop. When I came down to work for him I needed a car to drive so he let me use the Audi. I really knew nothing about B5's then, didn't even know it was a B5. I did know I really enjoyed the car even if it was only FWD. I had put about 100k miles on my wife's 03 Passat with the 1.8t, auto, so switching to the manual made the experience a lot more fun, even if I lost some horsepower. After a few months my dad offered to sell the car to me so he wouldn't have to pay insurance on it anymore. He gave me a great deal and sold it to me for $600. After that is when I really started to do research about it. Went through a few different forums before finding Audizine and falling in love with the car, the forums, and most of you ******s.

That her more or less unmolested.

First mod was a boost gauge, followed by an upgraded D.V, and a k0mressed tune.

Next was time for some new tires, so I got new rims as well.

Heres with them on, still 4x4 status.

After I got my first major productivity bonus I decided enough with the 4x4, time for some coilovers.

Worst issue was the rear control arm bolts, I ended up cutting them in half to extract then throwing the new bolts in the opposite way.

Dropped it on the ground and it was pretty low, so I raised it up to 26" and then just today in the pursuit of diagnosing noises, lowered it after re-installing the rear coilovers. This is how she sits now, 24 and 5/8". Will probably raise it a bit.

Bonus shot of my area with toolbox.

I'm sure I'll update this main post or make it better at some point, but I'm just riding the high of fixing the car and making her ride nice again so I decided to bust this out.

Edit: Plans for the car. Not too sure really. Probably get a FT with a few supporting mods. Some of the mods like fuel injectors would be to replace some aging bits and what not. My main goal now that I'm happy with the car is to get the body work fixed and a respray. I plan on contacting the local College body shop and seeing if they can do the work. At the time I get the body work done I plan to do a sunroof delete. Not sure what way I want to do it, weld in a steel plate or cut a piece of plexiglass and use a rubber gasket.

For the respray I want to go white with a black roof. I've always been a fan of black and white. All the bits in my computer are black or white. And I figure if I keep the roof black then having the engine bay and door sills black would be okay. Still undecided on any of this, but that's what I've been thinking about doing.

Hahaha yup you got it.

That's a lot of car for $600! Mine was $900 with bent valves haha. What are your plans for it?

My plans for the car change so often that I didn't even think to include them. Probably a FT with some supporting mods, fuel injectors and what not. I'll edit some in.

Yay for another local B5.

Really nice car. Glad to see you doing a build thread, I look forward to seeing all the progress.

It seems like there so many B5's on the west coast. Wish there were more in the east.

Maine has quite a few but not a lot of good tuned ones.

Upgraded to the facelift headlights today. Hopefully I have them adjusted more or less properly, nighttime will let me know for sure. Also super excited to be able to see at night.
Cutting the fender wasn't too bad except I cut less off with my first pass then I should have. Also my cutting wheel was pretty worn and I couldn't find another so it was pretty hard to use it to clean up the first cuts. Ended up using a file for the touch up. Drivers side came out perfect, passenger not so much as it was the first side I did and accidentally took off too much material in one area. After cutting the fenders I dressed the cuts and then spray painted them to help prevent against rust.

I think they look great although I need to find a way to secure them to the radiator core support. I will probably drill a hole in the housing and the support and use a ziptie.

The facelift headlights look great! Did you get the halogen ones of the Xenons? If you got the halogens, don't get your hopes up in terms of light output. Here's what mine are like at night.

Hopefully yours are better haha.

They are just the halogens, but with them using a projector versus reflector the light output is superior. I may have them adjust up a bit too much, but the difference to me is amazing. The difference was like driving with one light out for so long you no longer remember how much brighter it was with both headlights, and then installing that other headlight and having your eyes melt out because of how much brighter it is. Probably should have taken a before and after, and it may be just the quality of the photo but that output looks like the one from my pre facelift headlights. Make it twice as bright and that is about how much like the new ones give out. Probably not really but just my feelings on it. So I guess imagine that picture twice as dark and that is how terrible the preFL lights are to me anyway.

It would be awesome to throw some mini H1's in the headlights but this upgrade was plenty for now.

02-07-2016, 09:53 PM
Awesome upgrade! After coilovers this will be my next upgrade. I feel very unsafe driving in our neighbourhood, we don't have many streetlights and a lot of people walking dogs. I was going to go for Depo e-codes but want HIDs will an eBay kit work? I know the quality isn't the best, but the price is good.

Also, did you take any pics of the cut job on your fender? Can you take a pic when you do the rad support?

I'll take a picture of the drivers side cut tomorrow. I happen to live outside city proper so there are no street lights on my street. The light output from the one piece headlights were amazing on my drive home tonight. I'll get some pictures tomorrow night and post them.

From what I have read about the depo's as long as you use a 35w kit there is no issue. If you use a 55w kit some users have reported heat distortion and melting of the projector lense... or the headlight lense itself, I can't fully remember.

I got lucky and a former coworker who lived near a pick and pull sold me the facelift headlights and facelift seats for $200. I myself have yet to even step foot in a pick and pull or junkyard and feel like quite the amateur for that. That being said, the nearest pick and pull / junk yard is across the bay so its a bit of a drive and I have to pay a toll. Absolutely no excuse.

i forget the part number but you can buy the brackets for the lower headlight mounts.
You can also ask your pick and pull friend to go get facelift brackets.

Been super bad about taking pictures, sorry Pringle. I have all new axel boots, motor mounts and trans mounts to install in the car tomorrow so ill get some pictures of the cut then.

Ordered WLED R-5 (https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/instrument-cluster-gauge/194-led-bulb-5-led-miniature-wedge-retrofit-car/199/#/attributes/13) and installed it recently. Holy crap its bright, but I like it well enough. Illuminates the gauge really well.

No worries, looking forward to see pics of the mount install too.

I plan working on the car tomorrow. I had snagged a picture of the cut, but it turns out I deleted it from the phone without uploading it to imgur, so I'll take one then. Sorry Pringle.

In other news, I posted this to the craigslist spotted thread. https://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/ctd/5482805179.html

Might be my new car if everything plays out right. While I'm a tech and have done a number of pre-purchase inspections, I have never bought a car before except from family. If you guys could give me any advice about obvious things to look for and ask. Assume I know nothing about cars because when I get excited and nervous I tend to miss and forget things.

I say keep looking if ur not in a rush. Miles are a bit high and silver, I see plenty of colored 01s unless ur gonna finance through them or need it asap. Find a colored avant!

X2 on the pass for silver sedan. A 01 is a good find giving you more tuning options. Miles are a little high but it's a 15 year old car. Main thing I would look out for is service records. Sure you know this but that's the health history of the car.

If I could do it again a 01 colored avant would be worth waiting for.

Also nice progress on the your current b5👍

Current milage on my car is 154k, so milage wasn't my concern. My car however is quite literally falling apart, and I have very little interest in spending more on a FWD with body issues.

If I was an avant guy then waiting for a colored avant would for sure be the plan. I've been looking for almost a year and so far this is the best one I've seen that is "local". That being said it will heavily depend on the service history.

I plan to go all out on the car eventually, so a wrap or even a full respray when I tare it all apart wouldn't be out of the question.

03-13-2016, 06:16 PM
Looks good like a good car, but I'm partial to silver sedans. With that said, I'm with these guys keep your eyes open for a coloured avant. If I was to get another, I would look for one of those to DD while my sedan went under the knife for full build.

No worries about the pic. There's been a lot of chatter lately about the upgrade and I did see a photo of the cut on another thread.

Edit: forgot you were dealing with a FWD car. Grab that '01 Quatrro and welcome to the Silver club lol

Alright so long time no update, and no real updates for the moment, I have been doing work and will tell all that later.

Anyway's I love my car even though it has body damage and even though it's FWD, so I've decided to just plain have fun with it and do, possibly, silly things to it. I cut the muffler off and ordered a test pipe so the car can be free and loud. I figured I would open this up to the community, but are there any silly / strange / unique things you would do to your car if you weren't embarrassed (or too smart) to do? Yes I am pretty much just throwing money in a hole or what have you, but the car brings a smile to my face and I couldn't bear to get rid of it unless it blows up magnificently.
My goal is not to do modifications which intent would be to kill the car, but rather try things people haven't before? I don't know, not expecting much other then the " lol you are dumb buy a quattro noob", which I want to do but everytime I go look at one I get so discouraged that I end up more in love with my broken car then anything else.

06-15-2016, 11:03 PM
Cool. I say if you love the car, keep the car. We're all driving enthusiasts here and if it makes you smile, why change.

As to silly, strange, and unique goes I'm sur you'll come up with something. Troll around here long enough and you'll see a ton of things to inspire you. I've always been a big fan of flame thrower kits on hot rods, just a thought lol.
