finally traced down the issue with vag -com i had when i first bought the car, factory radio wasnt working. now i can connect to every module in the car, except one... i cant get into my central locks module. every time i try it pops up with to many communication errors to continue. i replaced it with another unit and got even worse results. so i swapped the factory one back in and now i dont even have keyless entry. any suggestions are appreciated. im running the latest VAG-COM with a "dumb" interface on a toshiba with windows 8.1 on a 2001 audi a4 sedan. i can connect to all other modules now just fine so im pretty sure its not the computer.

This is not an altogether uncommon problem with the ebay interfaces. Some modules are more picky on the timing. Usually everything works really nice with the real Ross-Tech cable, but the ebay ones can take some fiddling. In particular airbag modules, HVAC, and apparently the central locking can be picky about the timing (latency).

The usual fix is to adjust the COM port latency value. See here:

Default is generally16ms. Taking it down lower is the usual fix. I think most people just take it down to 1ms, but you can try different settings to see what works.

Next is to try the steps in Ross-Tech's FAQ, number 2.5 here:

Basically, make sure your PC is being bogged down by random crap.

turns out, my ABS module is bad. it was not actually connecting correctly to VAG-COM so after unplugging it i am able to connect to everything else.
