Ive run a search and cant seem to find anything completely matching my issue.
About 2 weeks ago, my 6 started hard shifting between 3-4. When I investigated by putting it in tip, i noticed 3rd gear seemed to hang at 4k rpm.
I disconnected the battery to hope to reset the TCU and the problem left for about a day. The next day it seem to problem grew to all gears over 1st.
No CELs and initial code checked returned blank.
There is no grinding or clunking sounds, and it almost feels more like a governor. It seems more electronic than mechanical.
any ideas?

How many miles on the car? How many miles on the transmission since the last fluid and filter change? You didn't say, so I'm guessing it's overdue. Old thick fluid might make the tranny call for higher pressure, causing harder shifts.
Also, VCDS usually checks for more codes than your typical OBDII CEL checker.
Good luck!

Do you have a bluetooth OBD scanner or anything plugged into the OBD port while your driving?
On some cars if something is accessing data via the OBD port it can ask for too much information and cause weird problems with the computers. Mine would do a hard shift from 5th to 4th and then back to 5th while cruising on the freeway. After some trial and error I realized the problem was my bluetooth OBD scanner.
This doesn't happen with all cars but it has popped up on a few that I've read about.

Unfortunately, you are correct. Mech checked the fluid and saw metal in it. Rebuild time! [mad][=(][headbang]

you are going to get metal flakes in the fluid no matter what. Before you go and drop thousands on rebuilding a tranny, just do the fluid and filter swap, then drive it. If it doesn't get any better, then save for a rebuild or 01e swap. But I wouldn't let a mechanic just say yup there is metal in the fluid, time to pay me 3000$. big metal pieces or metal flake in the tranny oil?

About to write the same thing and I couldn't agree more.

Thanks for the heads up. I will check in on that.
The tranny does have 130k miles on it though.
This place is being really slow in getting back to me, so I will definitely be getting a second opinion.

If you look under your car, on the bottom side of the tranny, ZF bolts a greenish rectangular plate to the tranny. This plate has the tranny number or code. Off the top of my head i wouldnt know which one you have. 5HP24?

I think he is the 5HP19A.
I thought only the V8's, S6, and RS6 got the 5HP24A. As well as the range rover, and whatever other models.

It's a 5HP19 for sure. OP, I sent you a PM awhile back I think. If you can make the drive to Charlotte, there is an amazing transmission specialist. His shop is called TransArt and his name is Arthur. The guy does amazing work. He rebuilt the CVT in my girlfriend's A6 and it's been great.
