Hi @rabbit -
I have taken the back off where the battery compartment is before but you cannot get to the metal button area to clean anything related to the mechanism as far as I know. Can you elaborate?

I didn't notice the button sticking when I watched the video initially. Try taking a needle and carefully running it around the button to pull up any goop between it and the housing.
I know we took my fob apart after I accidentally hurled my keys into a toilet but didn't pull the circuit board out.

Not on the key fob, but with other crap with buttons. I use a pin or toothpick dipped in alcohol to clean around them.

Dammit. That link says I need a smaller torx. I need a t5 I think, t10 is the smallest I have on hand.

Tool time!

I've taken these key fobs apart before, its pretty simple. It looks like your keyblade is either somehow broken or the spring mechanism is just worn out. You could probably buy a blank off of ebay for ~$10 and just swap over the spring in a couple minutes.

Or you could even just go to a hardware store and purchase a small spring that fits into your fob for cheap cheap.

There's also a little pin near the pivot that's only visible when the key is extended. Sometimes this works its way out, and you can see that it will catch on the plastic housing. You can just poke it back in with a paperclip or pen or something - this happens to me every 6 months or so.

I bought a used fob on ebay and swapped everything over, took about a half hour. Most of which was playing with the tension on the spring. Just watch out for the spring in the key once you take the screws out. You ll shoot your eye out kid.

Its basic. Simply remove the cover, remove the battery, remove the small screws, pull apart. Rewind the spring counter to its opening movement and holding it there replace the cover and screw back on. Replace battery and cover and recode to car.

Success.

The steps above are accurate.

T5 for two little screws.
T6 for one screw.

Don't lose the screws or spring. Or panic button.

Hopefully my video helps people understand the movements.

The "tall" end of the spring with the "arm" coming out faced up in my video. The little "foot" was facing down. Once both sides become secure, I wound the top piece counter-clockwise. I think three times or so until it created enough potential energy. Carefully push the spring down. Snap in panic button. Replace screws and battery cover.

Must have!

I'm glad you got your fob in working order and you didn't lose your panic button. I lost mine a while ago! Wherever will I do in the event I need my car to quietly beep?

Oh! That would be funny. I scared a lady on the freeway today with them. Maybe she'll think twice about cutting someone off next time. (Yeah right.)

Update:

I had the same key fob sticking issues again. I thought my spring was junk so I got a $10 eBay key fob blank. Put new spring in. Worked for a week then same issues appeared.

I finally identified the root cause as this one little meaningless screw. To the left of the ink pen in the photo. It couldn't be screwed in or out. The issue was it was SLIGHTLY sticking out and catching on the plastic fob.

So I used my Dremel grinding wheel to file it down. Once flattered there was no longer a friction point and issue resolved!!!
