View Full Version : Tire guy trying to screw me?

Hey guys,

So I took two sets of wheels and tires (mounted) over to my local tire place that I have done business with before. Both wheels are 19", stock rotor wheels and AG m590. One was a summer setup and one was a winter setup. I had to switch the tires between the two sets of wheels as I was putting the summer wheels back onto the S4 before I sold it. The Summer tires swapped onto the stock wheels no problem, but they told me the winter tires wouldn't go onto the AG wheel. Does this make any sense at all or are they just trying to get me to buy new tires? I am going to take the tires and wheels over to another shop to see what they say but I'm curious if I am missing something here. Thanks for any input!

Why can't they? Reason?

It depends on the width of the two tire & wheel sets. If the m590's are wider, and the winter tires are narrower, the winter tires might be OK on the stock (narrower) wheels, but too narrow for the m590's.

Yep... this.

It's completely possible that two tires cannot be swapped between 2 sets of rims, when fitting on another.

Thanks.

Reason was they "won't fit." No additional details when I pressed for more info. I was in a rush when I picked them up so I didn't ask him to show my why. He just told me they won't work basically.

This does make sense that the winter tires would be more narrow. I don't have the measurements of the tires but I know the AG wheels are 19x9.5. No clue how wide the stock wheels are.

Only you know what size tires you have on your car, and would be able to answer weather or not the winters were narrow or wide. It's (usually) easier to fit wider tires on narrower wheels than it is to stretch narrow tires to wider wheels. That sounds like what's happening here. The stock width of the 19's on the S6 is 8.5". So assuming your winter tires were bought to fit those wheels, you would need to have them stretch an inch to fit the AGs. Potentially not impossible, but I don't think your tire guy is trying to screw you either.

what are the sizes of the tires? That's the key question. Using my old S4 as an example, the factory size 19" tire fit on both the factory peelers, and a set of VMR 19.9.5" wheels, albeit with a little stretch.
