I'm in. All the best of a Valentine with GPS technology. My 9500ix has served me well, time to upgrade.

has anyone come up with a solid portable system that does not look like a radar detector? That is, something that looks more like a portable navigation unit or something along those lines for those of us in states where detectors are illegal?

Just got their e-mail a bit ago and took a look. The price..yikes! I have two Escorts, a Redline and an old Solo2. Hardwire kit in both cars so I can use either in either car. I use the Solo, on car power and highway setting, around town. All I need. When I bought the Redline, every test I could find said it beat the V1. So far, must say it does pick up radar and instant on from a great distance. But also got my 1st and only ticket with it, they used instant on after they passed me going the opposite direction, no detector could have prevented that. And with all the cars on the road that set off detectors (Audis with side assist sets off K band), it's becoming harder and harder to justify this amount for a detector. This is cool, and probably a useful feature (tho I wonder if Valentine will and or can pursue any legal action, this was their big selling point). Think I'll stick with mine for now.

I think there is a detector that is a combo kind of a thingy with laser jammer. Has a concealed display and detector diodes mount the same as laser jammer. A little better than having an obvious unit on your windshield maybe?

V1 can be had for $280-300 slightly used. Add in Waze and I don't see the need to spend an additional $300-370 for this Max 360.
However, I'll gladly recant if this shows much greater range or usefulness than the V1.

I am not ordering it until I see real world reviews of whether it can filter out the alerts caused by blind spot detection on GM and Acura cars. My 9500ix alerts me with quite a lot of time on hand so range wont be a biggie for me. I just hate it when I am stuck behind a left lane clog and there is a GM or Acura nearby.. makes my 9500 go bananas.

Same with my V1 and GM cars. I agree it's super annoying, but muting is simple. One of these weekends when the lady is out of town I keep saying I'm going to learn how to do advanced programs on the V1 and see if the GM band can be filtered.

I rather have it mounted in the rear view mirror.
Oh good, now I can know when I've been caught.
Hmm. I was just about to pull the trigger on a Bel STiR…

I wouldn't worry too much about radar if you dont have a laser jammer system installed. All this is going to do with laser is tell you you're about to get a ticket.
Still ALP all day, err'day.
Right, hence the STiR. I can add ALP on top of that.
Thankfully, local LEOs don't tend to use laser around here.

Just FYI you can send your V1 back to Valentine directly for an update which screens out all of the blind spot detection signals from all brand cars and let's you concentrate on driving. It only goes off when there is radar in the area. Best $75 I ever spent.

I've got a V1 that's been sitting in a drawer for probably close to 10 years. Still think the update is possible? Have they really changed that much?

If it has been sitting in your draw for ten years there are probably many updates you are due for. Go to their website (valentine one.com) (I think) and enter your serial number. It will instantly tell you what updates are available for your unit and what the cost is. I have had mine updated several times since I bought it. Much cheaper than buying a new detector. The difference after this last update was HUGE! I spent a good deal of my commute listening to it going off full blast everytime I was anywhere near an Audi, GM, Lexus etc. When I got the unit back from them which only took a couple of days at the factory it was like day and night. For 2-3 months now not a single false alarm from any car with Lind spot detection or auto cruise control. The whole purpose of owning a v1 is that no matter what the industry comes out with you can always update your old unit to incorporate all the new features. On some the updates I had done the whole outer casing and knobs were replaced which leads me to believe they just gave me a brand new detector for the price of an upgrade. With each upgrade they change your serial number so you always know what version of their software you have. You can also now sign up to have them automatically send you updates when they become available. Bottom line every update is like getting a new detector with the latest and most sensitive software. IMHO definitely worth the cost. GPS doesn't due you much good if a cop decides to set up in that spot for the day day and your unit is programmed to ignore the signal just because of the location.

Thanks for that info. $300 to update, ha. I think I'll just put that money towards ALP or something. I've survived this long.

What version do you have? I think I last checked mine last year and it was up to date. Version 1.85 maybe? I turned off POP which eliminated falses from Audis, but I still get plenty of falses from GMs and Acuras. Although I should just turn off laser (Acura) since laser is not used in Pennsylvania.

Only thing I'd say here: 30-day money back guarantee. You could find out how it works out for you (and by that time some other reviews will be in, too). Don't like it, return it.
