View Full Version : Sounds of venting air from the 2.0T at WOT?

So driving with the sunroof and the windows rolled down, in second gear going through a tunnel at around 4500RPM and floor it. All of a sudden I'm hearing what sounds like a kid attempting to whistle, or more like air being vented somewhere, and it's loud.
This only occurs at full throttle, doesn't happen if there is no load on the engine and revving it up. Not experiencing any loss of power what so ever. This is on a stock engine.

Welcome to the world of turbo cars. You're fine. cheers! Mike

I never heard this whistling sound on the 1.8T before, other than the turbo spooling. I've driven through the same tunnel before (but with much warmer weather) and don't recall hearing this before.

Does the sound differ from a turbo whistle?

Much.

The 2.0t makes 11.9psi so perhaps you could just hear it a bit more. It seems to me it is definitely just the turbo making boost since a turbo will not make boost during no-load situations even if you rev it to 7000rpms and that is what you described. An air leak will sound less like a whistle and be accompanied by power loss. Fora failing turbo you may hear something like a jet engine, but don't worry, you'll know when that happens. cheers! Mike

That is quite interesting. You drop some good knowledge in your post, i like that.

That's what I understood before, but on my 2.0t with the forge bov/dv, it does make a rather loud "whoosh" if i punch it in neutral(get it up to about 4.5k) and immediately let go.
i was surprised the first time it happened, but i guess it makes the beast more noticeable even at a stop. =D
BTW, i do not support/approve street racing in any way, i only did this once or twice next to a friend's car trying to get him to look over cuz i need to talk to him

I have to assume that is from the pressure going from negative (vacuum) to zero. Do you have a boost guage? cheers! Mike

Well sometimes when I shut off the car I can hear the engine (or something) winding down and it sounds like a jet engine - is this bad?

I'll have to head out to that same tunnel and take another listen.
As for that sound of what is winding down, I think it's related to the AC.... turn on the car and then the AC, then turn it off again and you'll hear it winding down.

I'll second that noise on shutoff being related to the ac compressor. Completely normal. Press "econ" mode before shutoff and it doesnt make it as loud. Also good to run econ mode and run full blast every once in awhile to keep the mold from building up in the system.

Bringing this thread back... :)
I was in a parking garage today and decided to do a few WOT runs. Now, in 2nd or 3rd whenever I went above 2500 - 3000ish, and let completely off of the throtte, I heard a distinct BOV sound, just not very loud, but it definitely was the pshh sound.
I just wanted to make sure that everyone else hears this aswell, during 1 run I actually heard the *cough* sound that I've heard people talk about on this forum with the upgraded DV.
Also, occasionally I get a little bit of hesitation during WOT from 3500 - 5000 rpm in 2nd, but it's very small...
Any possible issues or boost leak?
06' Stock - upgraded DV revision D
(I've tried removing the oil cap at idle and have felt a little bit of vacum, but nothing too crazy... However the pcv valve is original)
No CEL or any other signals...
Thank you!

The light psshh sound is your DV.
Don't do full throttle runs in parking garages. You'll kill someone.

it's your PCV Valve

So the DV should or should not make the light psshhh sound?
- I had heard about the *cough sound that revision D makes, but I've only heard it once..
I was thinking that it could be my pcv... I was hoping that it was still good after I tried taking the oil cap off while at idle test?
Should I still look into replacing it? L-revision from ECS?
Alsoo, I did the runs on an empty level of a parking garage :)

I'd leave it alone, if you haven't noticed any power loss, no codes thrown everything is probably fine. Sounds you hear in a garage aren't heard typically so they seem to be new and unknown sounds when its probably nornal.
