New tires for a 2012 A6 3.0T Prestige. After doing some research, it seems the Continental Extreme Contact DWS and Pirelli Cinturato P7 All Season Plus are my final two choices. I live in Chicago and do deal with harsh winters, but also care about performance in the summer. I love a quiet, smooth ride as well as great handling. I initially thought about getting a set of summer performance tires and using the all seasons in the winter but ultimately decided I would be more comfortable just leaving one set on year-round. Let me know your thoughts regarding these two tires - or any others you recommend. Thanks.

I had the Conti DWS on my 2012 A7 and thought they were a great balance between performance and snow traction. I had the 21" summer tires on there when new but switched to the A/S rather than a dedicated winter setup. Won't be so lucky on the S7. Need to start shopping!

Pirelli p7 have bad tread life and don't do well in cold weather. Those continentals are your best bet.

I have been running michelin a/s 3 for a while now. Great tires imho. Also, in Chicago you might need to look at a dedicated winter setup.

I've been looking at the new Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 as my next set of year-round tires for my S7, as the initial reviews have been favorable of this 2015 release.

Just bought a set of the Conti's for my 20" Avant Garde M590's and have about 300 miles on them. I live in Chicago also and did a ton of research before choosing them. Can't tell you how they are in winter but they have been great so far. Quiet and smooth. I'd buy them again.

I had DWS on 3 previous cars and currently running the Mich A/S 3 as well. The A/S 3 is a much better tire IMHO until it comes to snow. While I used it and was ok this past winter in NJ, the DWS are superior in snow(shallow or deep) instilling more confidence than the A/S 3. If you get a lot of snow in your winter and your winter is longer than the normal winter, then get the DWS. If you have less of a winter and it snows infrequently, then the A/S 3 are the better option.

Agreed a 100%. That is what I have heard from everybody who has used both tires. We do get snow here, but my work closes if it has snowed - welcome to TX..lol. If I would have to be driving in snow, I would definitely go for a dedicated winter setup.

I put a set of DWS on my car last fall, didn't want the P-zero for winter. This is the third car I've put DWS on, awesome tire. Great balance of ride, handling and low noise.

FYI, Continental is discontinuing the DWS. I was able to get Discount tire to price match a set at $170 a tire. 255/35/20's
This is the link to get Discount tire to price match the tires if anyone is interested.

As an FYI, the DWS is being replaced by the DWS 06, which early reviews are indicating as better performing.

Yep. I'd make sure to get the "06" version if considering the DWS'. The original DWS had super soft sidewalls. Turn in and cornering feel quite bad on them due to that, but they're fantastic in winter weather.

Anyone have experience running General Gmax AS-03? They look pretty equivalent review wise to the DWS, except on the snow traction (about a point lower on both light and deep snow ratings). Since I live in NOVA, it either doesn't snow at all, or we have Snowmageddon. The price of the General's are quite a bit lower (can get for <$500 with current promos)

After researching some more, it looks like the Pirelli's get some nice reviews, especially in the 19" and 20" wheel size range. My main criteria is a comfortable, smooth ride with limited noise and nice handling. I'm not going to be racing the car. I do about 70/30 city/highway driving and love a comfortable cruise on the highway.
