View Full Version : Removed S6 Suitcase Muffler - Now I Need Help...

I had my suitcase muffler removed about a month ago and had straight pipes welded in it's place and my initial reaction was, meh. I don't like it.

As reported by others it is almost not noticeable in midrange RPM, but it did make my low RPM sound deeper. So deep is not necessarily what I was going for. It sounds almost as if I have en echo going on. Another side effect is that it sounds like I have a motorcycle idling behind me at idle an low speeds, but there is no motorcycle. It's almost like an echo of something back there.

The deep tone is too deep for this kind of car, I don't think it's "European Sedan-ish Sound". There is one difference with my car that may explain my dissatisfaction with the mod. I have the S7 rear diffuser on my S6 and it required my exhaust tips to be cut. They almost reach the big oval tips, but are just short of them. I think I get a lot of extra resonance from my exhaust because of this.

I'm looking for more of a mid-frequency raspy sound. So I want to try to add an aftermarket exhaust piece to weld in place of the suitcase (now straight pipes) and try that out.

Questions:

What exactly is the suitcase? A muffler or a resonator?
What would you guys recommend I try in it's place?

I like the volume level of the mod, but I wish I could increase the frequency a bit. I'm a realist and I know I'll get the sound I like buying an AWE or Milltek, but I'd like to try a budget solution first, since I already have the suitcase out. Also, I contacted AWE and they don't think their S6 exhaust package will work with my diffuser.

Thanks.

Honestly, what you're describing is AWE. At low RPM you get a subtle rumble of the V8 but when you're on it you really get to hear it go. Its not too low either, its a good melodic V8 sound.

I know, but they told me it won't work with my diffuser, even if I cut the tips. Here is what I had in mind:

No answer for you. I removed the same section, installed straight pipes and AWE tips (while retaining the flaps) and although it sounds a bit louder, I don't hear anything like you're describing from inside the cabin. Mine sounds like stock, but just slightly louder. That magnaflow sounds like your best bet. At a minimum it should knock off a few decibels from where you are now.

Got a video?

I do, but it doesn't pick up on the sounds I'm describing.

Another option to consider would be a X-pipe. I've heard that tames the sound a bit compared to straight pipes. Answering one of your questions, I've often seen the center section referred to as a resonator. In fact, only the two mufflers located near the exhaust tips seem to be called mufflers. I'm not sure there's much of a difference in the two terms.

why not just buy a section of the Akra system and bolt it on?

I am almost 100% sure you can mod the AWE system to integrate into the RS7 rear btw.

I had an X Pipe installed today and it made all the difference. It's just as loud as it was with straight pipes I would say, but it really balanced the sound and got rid of the out of phase echo sound. I would highly recommend an X Pipe for anyone doing the suitcase muffler delete.

When you get some time you should make a video. Might give me something to do while I decide between the valvesonic Milltek or AWE catback.

I'll take a video. Now that I've had the X-pipe in for a few drives it sounds perfect now. I'm really happy with the sound level and tone.
