Hey everyone, while cruising my 2.7 had a freakish end last November as a wrist pin cracked and one of the RPM Rods let go of a piston and blew a hole out on both sides of the block. And working on Camp Pendleton, and my home being in Antelope Valley and never being home meant the car was going to sit on ice for some time due to work constraints due to distance. Anyways Every now and then I traveled home for a couple days and was able to slowly turn wrenches and accumulate the necessary parts. Anyways I'm just finishing my transition out of the Corps and being home for good starting September [cool]

I've mainly been posting on Facebook & Instagram, so I'll just post all the content I have so far and update in the coming weeks as I begin to pick up speed on my progression. I've sorted the bottom end, and currently looking at the Cylinder head and the options for Valves & cams along with the other long list of things I'll need to get sorted. [:D]

Anyways, here you guys go.

Lol, that hole looks like a mathematically perfect circle!

Back in the day I had a cammed vr6 with TECHTONICS cams and valve train components. I drove the shit out of it for years with no issues whatsoever. TT has tons of different cam profiles too, I'm sure they have one suitable for turbo apps.

She currently has 165 on the Body, Motor had roughly 80k Since the refresh and when I dropped in RPM rods.

It's funny you mention sound because I got into a heated discussion on here about a certain wide body avant with (K03s...) that I thought would be totally bad ass with a VR swap. One of the reasons was the sound. A VR has one of the best sounds ever and people were arguing that a 2.7t has the best sound. I was like "no way". 2.7t might as well be a dishwasher as far as sound goes.

I've recently fallen in love with Ricky's setup. Its sounds perfect IMHO. However I am going to try to use my Twin 2 and retrofit the DP to the cat back system. Im curious what the outcome will be.

Here's Ricky's VRT exhaust.

That sounds good. I do think that listening to the exhaust is only part of the equation with the vr though, it's like a symphony with intake and exhaust.

Whatever you run will sound good. My vr I was talking about was run on a 2.25" when everyone else had a 2.5" exhaust and it was different but still awesome.

Could have been anything... it's almost impossible to tell where/why an engine failure happened after the fact when it's total destruction.

RPM rods just like many others are just copies... if they weren't checked before installing it could have been the cause, pretty sure people have noted that come tolerances have been off on some of their rods... who knows for sure though.

Eagle had a similar issue a few years ago. No performance engine part unless OEM should be considered as "drop in"

Well if it was on his AWE stage 3 kit, the wrist pin definitely did't fail from power... unless he had a garbage tune on alcohol.

Ran K24s on the motor for roughly 70k on pump fuel, and I did beat the crap out of the car for some time before down sizing to my AWE kit, originally looking for an Allroad to slap the K24s on, but the S4 had other plans, and when the motor let go, I decided to keep it, and not purchase an allroad. Its just one of those things, but like it was stated above, no way to really tell exactly why the wrist pin failed. Just looking forward from this point on. [:D]

So many new bolt on parts available now. Engine brackets From Issam, oil pan, starter, coolant pipes from Touaregs also are able to be utilized. Of course the exhaust mani, intake mani are either retrofitted or custom. But this swap is only as hard as you make it out to be. The only item I am incapable of fabricating personally is the spliced harness. Most go stand alone, but for my personal preferences I am utilizing OEM management like Bische does in his B6 VRT.

Without a doubt, Issam @ INAEngineering has been a huge supporter and a great friend. And of course he led me to Bische who has made my harness and is writing the software for the ECU. I've got a fully built VR on a stand in my garage... I could have probably put it into my S6, but that didn't happen. I recall having the 12V VR6 engine and wanted to turbo it. But this is just the best VR6 setup you can dream about!

The biggest issue on the 12V aspirated engine was the limited headspace for 'flow'. Turbo the shit out of that to at least get some serious power. The 24V compensates for all the issues the 12V was having.

Agreed. I went with the 24v for not only those factors, but also to have the ability to use OEM engine brackets as the 12v has different mounting holes. And in the future If I wanted I now have the option to utilize an R32 head.

No, Beast Car Productions is doing an addition piece that will allow me to utilize the OEM manifolds. Something that Beast Car productions will be mass producing for the Longitudinal swap as well.

Similar to how Ricky is running, except, no vbands, and not welding on the cast Iron.

Ricky's Setup.. He welded vbands on the OEM manis and made an addition piece.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d149/NYEuroTuner/007_zpsoyvbzu3c.jpg

And the addition piece will look close to this, except in my case it will utilize twin gates. No need to weld on the cast iron, so it will use flanges to bolt right up to the OEM manis.

And yes, Tim is making amazing progress, this thing is finally coming together nicely!

Any updates?

Dropped off the head & new valve kit at the machinist last week, he said it will take a couple weeks due to how busy they are. Tim Sias @ Beast Car Productions messaged me yesterday saying more Manifold progress pics are going to be sent over. So everyone knows, BeastCar is fabricating my exhaust mani, intake mani, and down pipe coupler. Also Bische should be finishing up my software and buttoning up my harness. (List goes on and on) Issam @ IABEDINDUSTRIES should be sending me the last of my parts, custom oil pan, starter, passenger side bracket, TDI Trans.

Currently I am looking at Clutch/Flywheel packages, inter cooler cores while I wait. SO basically I am patiently waiting on others now that I've been home for a month and set everything in motion.

Haha nice touch on the plates! Where you putting those?

Idk, I think I am going to laser etch my info on it once the car is done, and attach one on the valve cover and the other perhaps somewhere in the cabin. :)

Hell yea, just remember Rome wasn't built in a day. Take your time. As everyone is aware, I attempted this swap back in 2008 and failed due to Military obligations and not being realistic. Thanks you!! Things are finally taking shape!!

Original date for total completion is Spring 2016. However as long as things keep moving forward like they are I'm hoping to fire her up sometime in February. Again that is assuming everyone stays on schedule.

So far I am still waiting for

Oil Pan
TDI Trans (Then once is arrives I will clean up and paint it)
Intake Mani
Injectors
Flywheel and Clutch
Various sensors (nothing major)
Intercooler system from SRM ( Sean is waiting on me to get the motor in the car with the trans so I can take precise measurements so he can start on the Water to Air SMICS.,.. Yes I said SMIC's :)

And of course I'm sure I'll run into hardware other small issues as I progress, but not anticipating those being a major issues.

Hello. Thanks for reply, and good job with everything are the aaa vr6 realy that bad? I have done +1v cams and bored to a 2.9 to try and keep up with the 24v engine.

24v looking a bit easier on the install though, I think I have less wiring to do.

Cant remember if you did a surge tank and new lines to rail ect. I have the 034 rail and already have the bosch 044 in tank. Do you think the oem f lines ect will b ok with a base run in tune and then do the rest to fuel system once certified and run in then upgrade? Its a a4 had the 1.8t unsure if thay have same f lines.
What fuel will you use? Are you putting in a water meth kit?

Ok Quick update...

Waiting on new accessories to arrive. New Alternator, Power steering and new tensioner, belts etc. Along with 1400CC + Fuel Pump kit from Sean @ SRM and new Flywheel bolts from 034.

Linked with a local Tig welder to have my MK4 intake manifold modified to work in the S4 bay, should be done in the coming week or so.

And while I'm waiting figured I'd have my old RKs stripped down and powder coated. I usuall match the wheels and engine bay, and since I am going black and Silver in the bay might as well have the wheels coated black with polished bolts and new Center caps from PureMS.

Also snagged a new set of Toyo T1R's from a buddy.

Been removing and installing the motor without any issues with the adapter plate.. I believe he ran 034 cradle or made his own engine brackets.. I'm running VR5/Issam's engine brackets. Fitment is perfect.

Looking good George! I'm glad Sean listened and changed up the pumps to bulkhead lines, they're a pain in the ass but the new stuff should be a breeze. We also had a problem with a relay burning up so Tim decided to get this bad boy here (http://www.foreinnovations.com/product_p/23-101.htm), IMO cleaner and safer. Also if you plan on running 4bar base pressure you'll need to mod the pumps because there's pressure relief valves in them and they relieve pressure at 8Xpsi.

Nice work! The VRT is sittin' pretty in that engine bay. What is your plan for intercooler pipe routing? Were you going air-to-air or air-to-water?

Planning on using Sean @ SRM to make a water to air kit. He's only 4-6 hours away from me, however I may just see if I can source a local who can set me up to avoid the travel etc.

Thanks guys, its getting there !

I concur.

Planning on exploring the limitations on the modified stock setup. Now that I acquired Justin's old Tubular mani, its a matter of having someone weld it to a flange and make a new downpipe or modify the one I have.

Thank you, slowly but surely Its getting there. Struggle between waiting for parts/ fabricators and also working 60+ hours a week and college.

Some updates. Working with a local welder to tweak my MK4 intake mani and set me up with some boost piping. Also waiting for my Spal fan kit and some misc hardware and pieces I need to get the fueling system situated.

So In the mean time, I decided to disassemble the S4 parts car I have and dress up my A4. Swapped out the headlights, front bumper, Grill and fogs. Also started ordering and hoarding some minor performance parts for the 1.8 as a fun daily to keep my sickness at bay while I wait for the VR stuff.

Some updates. Started to bolt down and TQ the driveline in the VR S4. Also replaced the very, very, very old AWE DTS mount as its deteriorated and cracked.

Also decided to wrap the CCWs in rubber and throw on the A4. Still have to roll the fenders and install the PSS9s I bought for the A4.

So you picked up a widebody saloon? Bastard [emoji6]

I'm evaluating the car for my friend who experienced catastrophic failure in SoCal 70 or so miles after picking it up from the shop that worked on it for almost a year. The shop shall remain nameless at this particular moment in time as there's going to be pending litigation... HOWEVER, If I have my way, she might be mine..... [:)]

VR6T + WIDEBODY... Just saying..

If I have my way, I'll swap all my VR6 stuff into the WB, and drop a basic 2.7 back into my Silver S4 as a daily. [:)]
