Hello all!

I am pretty sure i shot myself in the foot with the purchase of this car but oh well! Saturday i picked up a pretty clean example of a Imola Yellow S4. I am not new to the Stupid in over your head car build or purchase. I own a BMP fully shaved, resprayed, bagged, Euro all the things, Shaved Bay R32 on chrome/ polished VS-XX.

Bold underline is false

Specs :

Imola Yellow
153,350 miles
ST Coilovers
APR Tune
Spec STG 3 clutch (SA863)
JHM Trans Rebuild 1/2 gear
Timing done
New ICM's

Plans :

Maintenance
Maintenance
Maintenance
Exhaust
Turbo Upgrade (not sure what way yet)
Some nice light race wheels that are easy on the eye
then odds and ends but i will be focusing on Maintaining the heck out of the car

It does need the typical Interior Re-Fresh (I am super anal about this). It does need Brakes (which i already bought).

Plans are to drive it, Maintain the hell out of it and get it up to as close as new as possible. This is technically my 3rd car at the moment so i am not in a rush to get it there in a week. All parts will be quality and OEM. I hate cutting corners as it never really works out in the long run.

i will get some pictures up tonight of my stable. i am Cajkaaa on Instagram. Give me a follow!

Items taken care of:

Rear Wheel Bearings
Motor Mounts
Trans Mounts
Snub
Fuel Pump
Brakes
Control Arms (FCP)
Tires
034 Maf Boot
found oil leak
oil change
filters changed
floor mats
Deep clean
Heater hose
All three temp sensors
Coolant expansion tank
aux pump
valve cover gaskets
cam locking tool
Power steering Pump Rebuild
90 degree small stupid hose

Imola was sold! now its onto a 2001 Brilliant Black Stage 3 Avant

Congrats on the purchase. These cars certainly are not for everyone, but you coming from experience at least allows you to know what you're getting in to. If you need anything, let me know. We deal with 034 Motorsport, JHM among many other fantastic companies still supplying this platform with top notch parts.

Thanks,

Greg

Anyways, good luck OP. Sounds like you've got the right mindset - focusing on maintenance first.

Well.....

new tires are on the way. should be at my friends work tomorrow. The reason for new tires is the fact that the guy who i bought the car off must have NEVER aligned the car. so on my 2 hr journey back home with the car the front have bad inner camber wear. the rears are scalping hardcore.

I'm putting stock 225/45/17 tires on the car. The rear end will fit the tires and not rub. The fronts i believe is too low for new tires. i could be wrong but i doubt it.

i am doing an alignment to et everything proper and in spec so i can have fun and enjoy driving the car.

i have been thinking of doing upper control arms to get rid of all the camber. what do you guys recommend in terms of adjustable ones. OR do i actually need them? can i get the camber out without using them? i would probably do STERN or 034 ones, as i know they are very good quality and not some aftermarket garbage that some companies put out.

thoughts, ideas, recommendations?

actually went with SPC through Andrew at Open Road Tuning. I went with these because they were $380 for both sides and they didn't have heim joints. I do not plan on tracking this car so i don't think it will matter much to me at all.

Well. When doing the maf boot this weekend I noticed the heater core supply line is leaking (a bit more than I'd like).

Anyways I'm going to be doing a coolant refresh

Feed hose
Sensors
Expansion tank
After run pump
Hoses for it
Cave cover gaskets
Oil cooler

I think that's it for now.

I have put maybe....100 miles on her. Haha.

Normally I'd be all about the low and good fitment and such but that's not the sorority of this car.

While I'm in here doing some cleaning and fixing I'm going to raise this car up to a good drive height. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/26/9196fef72275c62d521b2b8224405dca.jpg

Your car is a bit lower than mine, but these cars can go decently low without sacrificing too much depending on the suspension you run. Here's where mine sits if it's helpful. Kudos to another Imola owner!

i really do not want to have to repaint this car due to rubbing paint off from being too low.

so while i was cleaning i got under the car and noticed some oil (by some i mean more than i really wanted to find.)

the oil lines to the turbo are not covered it seems to be coming from the front of the block. when i can get the time to take the parts out of the driver side to take a look from above i will. this was a tad bit discouraging to me but hey! I bought the car knowing issues would come up. I may even just go ahead and do turbos now.

One more thing is i believe that when the PO did the clutch he never did the Rear Main Seal. UGHHHHHH. other than these minor things the car is very clean and solid on the underside.

I'm on ST coils. I really like the Look of that height on this car. I am guessing you are on 18s?

If i really wanted to go low i will just bag it. I would like to stay away from that as well.

Seems about right - with prices dropping, a lot of S4s are in need of some TLC. Put in the time and money for maintenance and these cars can be really reliable and will always put a smile on your face [drive].

I'm on 18s, I didn't measure but I'm keeping it at this height when I swap in new coilovers.

I feel you on the maintenance stuff, it took me a year to take car of all the neglect and niggling issues the previous owners left on this car. A real shame, because it can add up to a big headache down the road for future owners.

Untill I can get my pressure washer back this will do.

Got my tires on today and an oil change.

My leak is my valve cover gaskets so I'm going to order those and some coolant items to fix a few leaks then go over my pcv system and clean it so if it's backed up I don't blow another gasket.

On a side note. I'm wrapping the interior of my R32 this winter. The plan is a nice bright red. I want suggestions though. Should I do red stitching or black? The R logo will be retained I either a red or a black stitching.

Suggestions?

And no I'm not a trust fund kid. I work and save. Such a horrible cycle lol.

I forgot to comment about the SPC adjustable arms. I've got a set on the S6 and they served their purpose. However, I didn't do anything to prevent the arms from rusting solid and now I've got to get a new pair. I'd be worth it to look into some sort of boot to cover the threaded portion of the arms.

Also, on my next set, I'm going to be replacing the inner bushings with uprated bits from SuperPro.

Valve cover gaskets, after run pump, all three coolant sensors, heater core supply line, spider hose cleaning, new expansion tank, F hose delete and some more cleaning of the bay done.

What an experience to say the least. I did find out on the driver side valve cover the three bottom bolts were not tight. That might explain the oil spewing everywhere on that side.

drove the S4 to work today and i notice a nice squeeling noise from the front of the car. pretty sure the Fan Clutch went bad. it seems to get noisier at higher RPM's and doesnt make more noise when i turn the wheel.

thoughts?

The fan would be very audible if the fan clutch went out. Maybe a bearing on one of the rollers?

I didn't see any mention of timing/serpentine belt replacement from the quick skim I did of your thread

Can't watch the video (no unlimited data plan) but if the noise subsides after 4k I don't think it's the fan clutch.

Can you pinpoint what side on the front of the engine it's coming from? Does it vary in pitch with rpm? Does the pitch change when turning the steering wheel while stationary?

its hard to say which side really.

there isnt any one certain location where it gets louder at though. it goes away at 4k rpm kinda sorta. it doe not change with the wheels being turned.

stays the same pitch

took the front end off and took a gander at the accy belt system. took the belt off and looked down at the alternator (which is new) by the way and it didn't look right. i grabbed the pulley and sure as shit the pulley was lose. i am pretty confident the lose pulley wore the shaft down so i need to figure that out.

It never did when the noise was happening.

The kid who I bought it off of is going to see about a warranty. He had just gotten the alternator

My question is if he doesn't come through how do I know which alternator my car came with. Bosch or VALEO? I know which my R it doesn't matter I can use either. I'd like to replace it with the exact model if possible if the kid doesn't come through.

the alternator is out of the car. the label is not there though. i may have to find out where he bought it from when he replaced it. its only 6 months old.

I'm really off the ball. Unless it's the bearings causing all that play I don't think so.

Best to get a used one cheap and rebuild that

I probably should do that. The junk yard by me has 4 2.7t from all roads and A6's hopefully one matches my alternator.

All 2.7T alternators should be 120amp units regardless of what model they change in. You could even use a 2.8 alternator as that is 120amp as well.

Just grab and run haha

got a new Bosch alternator in last night. with a NEW BOSCH pulley.

It looks like my car was originally a VALEO alternator car and when they replaced the alternator they reused the pulley so the pulley was lose on the shaft and we wound up here.

oh well it happens, it really does make me wonder about the rest of the cars "service" repairs.

My good friend is a Tech at a local Dealership. they took in an 01 tip S4 a month or so ago. i never got to look at it BUT he had extra brake pads in the car that i took for my car.

Upon opening the box i realized they were for Porsche 6 pot brembos. I will be putting them for sale in the classifieds shortly.

they are used

Pagid Club Race orange RS4-4
Axxis Ultimate DB439

I am not giving these away as i spent money on him for his car so this was "repayment" anyone know what a fair price for these would be?

been some time since i posted here.

car has been running really well as of late. cleaned it up, did a full paint correction with polymer net shield for winter protection. that was a 3 day ordeal.

anyways i am getting ready for some more maintenance. I have read just about every brand control arm has had both good and bad luck. that being said what brand lowers should i look at purchasing. i have the SPC uppers on stand by. i know install is the biggest factor in making them last longer.

any recommendations?

rear wheel bearings are easy (if you have a press). The whole upright comes off with 3 bolts. Just be prepared to have to get an alignment again. Even marking the eccentric bolts does not get it back 100%

The avant is a K04/996 hybrid stage 3 car. One or both turbos are gone. I purchased two K04's with new CHRA's and i was planning on running them and just be happy. NOW, i am considering doing a SRM RS6 turbo setup with a built bottom end.

what is audizines thought on this matter?

I may keep dallying it and fix it as it breaks once it goes RS6. Or ill get a Tacoma and have a second sunny day car. I will however take the car to the strip and track more than likely. Such a big issue to be in. [wrench]

Its pretty nice to have a truck daily around here. Especially the reliable, Toyota sort of truck.

Buy the tacoma, tear the avant down for a bonkers built bottom end Tial / RS6 E85 build. my 2 cents! [up]

That will also keep the avant out of the rust juice they put all over our roads.

A truck would be nice for sure. Who knows if i will even use a truck for truck purposes...... I am guessing they put the prune juice salt crap on the roads up in the Slimmey Pebble? Down in the big city we just use salt and the sand crap.

I would LOVE to do a Tial kit. However, I do not think the wife would approve of me spending THAT much. My car is already setup for a bigger turbo and E85. I will just need rods and a better clutch really.

Its the state trucks that puts calcium chloride on all the highways when the temp is like less than 20 because salt is ineffective. thats the shit that eats vehicles even worse than crushed salt.

BMH pays well, tell the wifey your going to need a set of tials for a late christmas present. Its important!

Same. i even had a connector crumble on me, had to get another off ebay and splice it in. Damn plastic gets brittle. and working in this cold weather doesn't help. i dont know about you, but my garage isnt very warm lol.

Your car is a bit lower than mine, but these cars can go decently low without sacrificing too much depending on the suspension you run. Here's where mine sits if it's helpful. Kudos to another Imola owner!

B. Fully polished or chromed ones.

Agreed. I have been close to pulling the trigger on two different sets from Poland but I got nervous. From everything I hear if you deal with a reputable seller who has shipped multiple sets of wheels in the past it is pretty smooth.

I have shipped a few sets of pricey wheels inside the US and received my most recent set via FedEx from a US seller. Adequate insurance and a two payment installs on ship and delivery are key. I am sure you know all this.

Hey bud I know your wagon has BCs on it. I am considering new coilovers in the next few months and I am torn between BC extreme lows and HandR ultralows. I currently have STs and they are past their prime. What do you think of your BCs and do you have different spring rates in them than what comes stock? I heard a few folks go with a 2-4K stiffer spring in the rear in the avants. They are about the same price as HandRs and you get dampening with the BCs but as far as quality is concerned nothing can really beat HandRs.

I won't be riding super low / frame bang low/ devin Hoodrich low but I would say I plan to be fitted on 18s so I want to get a coilovers capable of still riding nicely, with shorter shock bodies to accommodate.

Bags would be nice but I have no plans to cut my strut towers to be able to layout level. Airing out with revers rake would be dumb. I feel like that would really effect the resale value of a b5 s4 avant, if it was a sedan I wouldn't care as much.

Anyways, any insight on your experience so far would be awesome, thanks!

I was talking about it with some of the dudes on the Facebook group, you have to test your fuel every time you fill up and/or run a wideband with a built in ethanol % gauge and adjust tunes accordingly. i don't know if I'm down for that much commitment, haha.

its a good thing my car has that. [cool]

Don't pay those prices. I'll hook you up with my sensor/gauge after it's been tested. Should be a couple weeks. Replaces the clock in the cluster. Right now it's ethanol/fuel temp, but we will me coming out with AFR and other stuff in the next month.

My fault I was directing that to euromike. But you're welcome to check it all out... I've been stuck renovating a bathroom for my wife, but close to being done so I can't spend more time in development. Sorry for mucking your thread.

Yeah man, i will check with you before i buy anything for sure. Still have to track down why it only boosts 18psi before i do any E85 retuning. Progress with my car is slow, also finishing up a house remodel, i know the feels.

well. I use a SLEW of products.

Sonax and Chemical guys Wheel cleaner. Both of these are my TOP choices. Then to get the harder caked on stuff i use some brushes, dish soap, and scrub them. Then i hit the wheels with some never dull to finish off the cleaning process (i have always liked this product for a quick clean and re-shine) it doesn't last long but it helps. I use a regular wax applicator with some Mothers polish on it for the hard to reach areas and then a cone polisher for the big areas.

I also use Blue Magic polish during the season on my wheels if need be. However since i have discovered this product i have nothad to use any polish during the season.http://www.chemicalguys.com/Carbon_Flex_C9_Protective_Coating_Kit_4_Items_p/wac227.htm?gclid=CNj2x5vhitMCFcWPswodNpIE8Q

white walls will make it so much brighter in there, good choice. i need to insulate mine this year. tired of being cold all winter.

harbor freight has a sale on these sweet rolling toolboxes for like $240. actually good quality unlike most of their shit. you need a few for in there.

Pools are a pain in the ass.

just got done changing the sand in our filter because the water is all cloudy and won't clear up this year.

you are spot on with that statement. my pool is clear under the cover. hope it stays that way for about a week more.
