Hey guys,

I know that with any car, there is common problems that all their owners have to know from the get go. For example, when i was a Honda CRX owner i knew that one day my sunroof will give out on me before it did, i knew that air levers to hold up the hatch will go out every couple of years no matter what you do...

what are some very common problems with the 96+ A4s?

Dissolving braided hoses, diverter valve, wheel bearings, control arms, timing belt / tensioners, that's all that comes to mind right away.

The list would be shorter if you listed the things that won't break on these cars.

LOL, I've never have a problem with my A4 so far since 1.5 years. Because I got everthing fixed before I started to drive. :)

ABS Control Unit is a big problem on A4's, S4's, and A6's that have QUATTRO but do NOT have Traction Control, at least that what i gathered when I did a poll on AW about the units. It seemed that almost every bad Control Unit was on those cars.

voltronB5: usually when an ABS Contol Unit goes bad you will get and ABS light and Brake light that tun on in your dash. The brake light will flash, and upon starting up the car it will beep three times. A new control unit is probablly around $1000, but you can get the broken one rebuilt for $250 from Module Master.

wheeww... no abs problem for me... <knock on wood>

also, i replaced a plastic pipe that was towards the back top middle of the engine that was causing a leak... my mechanic said that because it was plastic, it cracked and was leaking. which it was and that solved the problem.

Its probably just the reminder to change your oil. There's a post on how to reset it in this forum. Off the top of my head though, its hold down odometer reset, turn key to first click display will say "Oil" or "Insp"(for service) then you take the knob under your tach and pull it to reset. Turn the key off, turn it back on and shouldnt say anything at startup. and if you havent already, go change your oil [;)]

Problem: Car is too fun to drive

- resulting in being the chauffeur for your friends + ridiculous gas bills from all the miles you'll put on.

The lower door mouldings on the outside of the car rust and fall off too easily.
Some eletrical gremlins pop up here and there (Blown alot of bulbs/loose wiring in the valeo ecode ballasts)

Fuel Gauge.

But then again I fixed it in under half an hour so....not really.

Other than that - 0 problems.
