Hey guys, I just sold my 2011 Wrx with 300 AWHP for a 2006 B7 a4. Why? Commute an hour each way for work now, and used the extra money to pay off my student loans. Good? Yeah but i bought the car with 68200 on it for 7500 good deal right? I thought so but I have had the car for 2 weeks now and its been driven 2 days because of all the problems. First off a little background. It is stock 6 speed 2.0t with 68200 miles on it. I test drove it no problems, so I bought it.

On the way home i ripped on it and it didn't go anywhere. Ok boost leak no problem I read about the diverter valves before I bought it and figured that was it. Then later that day it threw a code. P0299 Underboost so i look it up and says diverter valve. ok great order it. later that day I am getting ready to go down to Atlantic City I pick up my buddies, and it starts smoking white smoke out the exhaust and smells bad, so I don't take it, leave the car. Next day i look up what it could be PCV. ok so I bought an 034 catch can kit. I drive it to work on monday and no problems until on the way home and smoke starts billowing out of the exhaust as im driving. I park it at my buddies house for the week order the 034 catch can kit, new plugs, new coils, diverter valve, cam follower, and ecs vent boost gauge, and vagcom. Borrow my buddies car for week. Parts come in. Install all parts this past weekend. fire her up. no smoke, great! btw there was a rip in stock diverter valve, and when you took out oil filler cap it sputtered before catch can. Ok so now it doesn't do that. Take it for test drive, she has boost and actually drives. no smoke. GREAT! fixed! not so fast. get back to buddies house turn car off go inside for 10 minutes go back out to leave, turn car on and it starts smoking! EFF me! so we stand there for 20 minutes acting like it will fix itself. pop the hood rev it and a little bit of smoke comes out between turbo and downpipe not a lot but a little and a lot out the exhaust. Ok well nothing i can do now lemme drive it home. Drive it home smoke goes away after driving. get home park car. take her back out later that night no smoke. runs good. next day (yesterday) start her up in morning all good drive to girls house pick her up go to shoprite all good turn the car off run inside for 10 minutes start the car up starts smoking, drive across the street to auto part store for misc items smoke goes away, dont turn car off as i go inside. then go across street for food turn the car off go back out 20 minutes later start her up and she smokes again, drive back to girls house no smoke, get there turn car off 10 minutes later leave and turn car on starts billowing out again. drive to my buddies house it goes away. We jack it up look underneath bc there was some oil on driveway. Its dripping out of the intake side of turbo and diverter valve. I drive it home no problem (it sat for 90 minutes before i turned it back on). get up for work this am, no problem drive to work no problem, go on my lunch break to inspection station no problem until i get there and they turn car off and then back on a minute later it smokes, they fail me for "visible smoke" i drive away smoke goes away. Now im driving home from work and low oil light comes on. I changed oil saturday when i did catch can. thats 2 days.. so obviously its burning a good amount of oil. Any ideas? blown turbo? blown lines? I need this fixed asap obviously. I think it was a combination of the turbo and pvc because now it only smokes on a restart up if its less than an hour of sitting, but no longer driving (as of now) but its still burning a large amount of oil. new k03 is 1100, and new lines 350. what do you think is the issue or do i pretty much have it figured out? thanks for any help! Seems to be happening to lots of people lately, sounds like what happened to me. See this post as well: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/649810-Smoke-Smoke-and-Smoke!
In my case it was a bad valve cover (plastic cover, not the gasket). $275 part and less than an hour to change. Basically the valve cover has passages for PCV routing, and if bad, will put lots of oil into your turbo inlet, getting into intercoolers, and finally into the intake, which will then get burnt and smoke out of exhaust. Bet you when you remove intercooler hoses you will have lots of oil in there.

How can you tell if the valve cover is bad upon removal?

Have a look at Shiro's post: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/558554-SHIRO-PCV-system-explained

Definitely pop off your lower intercooler hoses...you'll probably get a quart+ of oil out of them. If so, it's probably a bad valve cover...just did this on my son's new to him '07 w/98k. It was sucking down 1.5 quarts in 400 miles into the cooler pipes. New V/C and gasket and problem is gone. Picked up my V/C from ECS, but it looks like JHM has a decent price too for an OEM part. We did the 034 catch can at the same time, but it's still totally dry except for vapor when you check it after running.

As far as checking the V/C, the passage on the PCV side closest to the timing belt goes directly to the turbo breather (silver pipe on passenger side front). This passageway should be sealed from the rest of the system...you can pressurize or pull a vacuum through one side and block the other...if it doesn't hold pressure, it's leaking and sucking oil under boost straight into the turbo & intercoolers, then right back into the intake when you gas it. Hope this helps!

Thank you! Doing compression test tm and testing valve cover. New valve cover and gasket coming in tomorrow as well!
