View Full Version : Car shut off while driving, won't start

I was driving the other day, very calmly, shifted into 6th at about 45mph and my car shutoff. Radio and all lights remained on, just the motor died. I pulled over and tried to start it and it wouldn't turn over. It cranks like it wants to start but doesn't. I checked the coil packs, they're new and they all looked fine. Check spark plugs, and they looked good too. Checked my cam follower and camshaft, and they seem okay as well. Hpfp also seemed fine.

Not sure what else to check. My car used to have a problem with starting after I would get gas. It starts immediately all the time, unless I go to start it at the gas pump. It would take a bit it start. I solved this by leaving the car on while getting gas and haven't had a problem. I do occasionally turn the car off while getting gas and it has started up fine, so I'm not sure what that problem could be. I get an evap leak code, but I have had it for more than 6 months and haven't had a problem until now. That's the only code that is showing, but it's always been there.

Not sure where else to look to solve this problem. I turn the key and I can hear my fuel pump prime so I don't think that's the problem.

Any ideas on what this could be?

I should also mention that I just replaced a section of brake hardline 3 weeks ago, and haven't had my abs bled since I do not have vagcom. I have the abs and esp lights on due to this. Not sure how it could be related but you never know

I don't think your brakes would cause your engine to shutdown. That's really strange. Wish I was closer to check with VCDS--hopefully someone within the region will be able to.

With respect to getting gas, I NEVER leave my engine running (against the law, isn't it? Particularly in NJ where they serve you). Have you checked/replaced your N80 valve for the EVAP code? Mine required a quick replacement of that little valve. $16+shipping from EuropaParts.

Take a quick run through your fuses if you can, just in case. The pump priming is the lpfp in the tank. It's possible your hpfp cut out, or something else. And while you're at it, take a gander at engine bay to see if there are any torn/chewed/damaged wires.

Thanks, I haven't checked the n80 yet.

Nobody has ever said anything about it at the gas station. Quite a few people I know leave their cars on. If you have a turbo timer it will be running anyway, so basically the same

I had a similar issue with my B6. The car would shut off while driving and wouldn't start after. Battery was fine and it would crank but wouldnt start.

The problem in my B6 was the 219 relay but i am not sure whether the B7s have a similar relay.

2.0t? If so did you happen to check your timing belt? Probably (hopefully) not the case, but couldn't hurt to take the top belt cover off and check.

Car is 2.0t 6mt Quattro if it matters. I'm going to check the timing belt now

Not sure what the timing belt should look like exactly, but here it is. Has tension on it, doesn't seem cracked or anything.

I ordered the n80 valve, so that will be in tomorrow. I definitely think I needed it to fix some of my issues, but could that be what caused the car to shutoff and now not start at all?

I don't think that would cause your shutdown/startup issue.

Seriously, try to get the car scanned with someone via VCDS (check the regional forum), and it may provide you more answers than we can.

^^^ +1 You're just guessing when you throw an N80 at it.

Get it scanned. Could be fuel pump related, Engine speed sensor, the list goes on and on and you're just throwing darts blindfolded.

agreed - scan it. but any chance its the clutch switch?

Agreed, but the N80 is cheap enough to probably solve his EVAP issue, though that's contingent on getting the car started again. But yeah, OP, you can hold off on the N80 install until you get it running again.

Clutch switch is only a few months old, don't think that's it but I'll look at it.

With the way my car just shutoff I'm assuming it's a sensor or a relay, if it isn't the fuel pump. My e36 had the same type of thing happen when the intank pump went.

I am trying to find someone who can scan the car for me, and hopefully that will give me an answer.

I had this happen when my cam follower crapped out, the starter would crank, sounded odd but all the electrics were perfect. Turned out i had shrapnel caught in the cam tensioner preventing it from rotating.

Not sure if it helps but just another angle.
