For a while now something has been squeaking on my wife's Avant- noise is heard while car is running and in neutral with clutch out. Clutch in, sound goes away.

Possible that it's related to a failing DMF?

First guess based on description would be pilot bearing.
It could also be trans input shaft bearing and slim chance throwout bearing.
I have not heard what a flywheel sounds like when it starts to go so I cannot comment. Hopefully someone who has had flywheel go can chime in if it made any noise.

DMFW failure is typically a vibration at a specific RPM range (sort of like when you have an unbalanced wheel at 60mph). However, with the flywheel the vibration will get worse and worse until its vibrating all the time. Shortly after that it destroys your transmission.

Squeaking can be pilot or throw out bearings.

Thanks Jake, that's helpful. I believe you're right - must be a pilot or throwout bearing. Sometimes a squeak is heard when letting the clutch out (right at the top)
