View Full Version : Raced a 335i msport

Raced my friends 2014 335i msport from a 60 roll and he beat me by 1/2 a car. I saw him gaining on the shifts (the bmw has a fast shifting zf 8 speed and redline is higher than my b8.5 s4). From a stop I beat him by 1-2 cars. I think I did pretty well from a roll considering his car weighs like 300lbs less. I'm happy with the results especially from a stop where our cars shine. I'll probably tune soon.

assuming MT, because DSG is no slouch compared to the BMW's auto

This! DSG is absolutely a faster shift than the zf(which is a great tranny, not knocking it).

I'm dsg and I really don't think the transmission is faster than the zf to be honest. I drove my buddies 335 about 2 weeks ago and I think it shifted faster maybe it's just my imagination.. Both cars shift fast and I will say after driving both and owning the audi for 2 weeks i def like the audi more..

I'm assuming the bmw was rwd, otherwise, i think it would be no contest. Pretty surprised he beat you honestly. Was it really hot out? You should throw a few gallons of e85 in the mix and try again.

I wanted to want a 335 because they are cheaper, but the S4 feels more solid, and feels at least 5 years newer on the inside.

Yup, both are sweet cars but you get what you pay for. Audi interiors are on a different level.

The bmw was rwd and it was warm out but the car was fairly cool.. I can't just throw e85 in the car when its in stock form right? Lol prob doing the giac tune soon, I'm assuming after the tune if theres the ability to change maps I might be able to throw in some e85

Yes sir u can! I run 3 gallons e85 mixed with a tank of 91 on my stock s4 with an intake. It performs better even in stock form. With just 91, i could feel the car get sluggish when it was in the 70s even. With the e85 mix, it was in the 90s yesterday and it still felt strong. Better performance, cheaper, and still averaging 18mpg city! Definitely try it out!

I run 3 to 4 gallons of E85 as well and I can definitely feel a difference in my car than just running straight 93. The guys from Solomotorsports posted they found that the ECU can compensate up to E30. You can use the link below to calculate the ethanol content to get the correct mixture. Also keep in mind that E85 is not always E85. Class 3 ethanol can be as low as E70. You may need to do some research and find out what class of ethanol is in your area during this time of year.

Use the bottom most graph labeled "Octane result from blending 2 fuels": http://www.intercepteft.com/calc.html

The ZF8 auto is no slouch. It shifts in about 200ms, which is exceedingly quick for a 'normal auto'. The S-Tronic may be faster, but not by much. I believe Audi conservatively claims 200ms. So maybe its in the 100-200ms range. Not a huge difference for a street car.

Not sure if this is a dumb question but Is the ZF8 trans the same thing in BMW and audi's? Or can it be tuned differently?

My ZF8 is quick, but I drove a DSG audi the other day and dam it's snappy[emoji106]

the zf8 trans is different than a dsg in that the dsg is a dual clutch system and the zf8 is a a more typical standard auto transmission.

it's pretty insane how good the zf8 trans is but as others say, compared to a proper dual clutch it's not as quick, especially on the downshifts.

AWD typically always beats out RWD from a dig, but what surprised me is the 1/2 car on the roll, speaking based only on the cars metrics, the bmw should have had you by more given it's lighter and healthy amount of power

Same transmission, but the tunning is very different. I've driven them back back many many times, but in the BMW and in the Audi and the ranking is in this order. My DSG with the update, and pretty closely the BMW ZF and a very distant third the Audi tune. The 1-2 shift in the Audi ZF is very lurchy compared to the BMW. It also holds top gear longer and does not utilize engine braking nearly as aggressively as the BMW.

I should also point out that I've only driven the Audi tune on 2.0 application so another application may be very different. I've driven the BMW ZF extensively in the X6 5.0, X3, X5, and 3 series.

The lastest zf8 shifts in 200ms up or down and has the ability to skip gears. it's also insanely strong and spec'd stock in both the RS7 and the Mopar Hellcat cars/trucks.

DSG will upshift in 8ms and down shift in 600ms. I don't know if it can skip gears. I think the newer ones can. Yes, it's faster on the uptake, but you'll lose almost a 1/2 second on part throttle punch. more if you need to drop more than one gear. At the end of the day, what's a little bit slower, right?

Definitely do. It's hard to notice the improvement at first. Do what i did, run two back to back mix tanks, then follow up with a full tank of normal boring fuel. You will begin to see immediately where normal fuel is lacking. Car just feels more like it's supposed to.

^isn't e85 particularly hard on your fuel lines/fuel pump?

AudBoost
06-22-2015, 11:04 AM
^ Straight E85 yes. But pump gas is already E10 so you are not adding much more to get to ~E30. Where it becomes stressful on the fuel system, particularly the HPFP and LPFP, is at higher concentrations because E85 requires more flow.

i thought it was the flow, and the fact that e85 is more corrosive than normal gas?

s4 to s5, the s4 is longer, more narrow, and sits higher, also I think it weighs more.

335 to 435 - 435 weighs more by 60lbs sits lower, is wider

again, not completely different cars but different

Biggest problem is volume. You cannot run pure e85 because your fuel pumps/injectors could not keep up. I haven't heard of a single valid report of rotting fuel lines or anything like that.

335 guys run 50/50 mix all the time. I plan on running my 3 gallon mix until winter.

Shicka,

With all due respect the comparison is almost identical. The S5 weighs slightly more than the S4 and generally has slightly (negligibly) worse performance. If I'm not mistaken the weight difference between 435 and S5 is even more than between 335 and S5.

I would also add that the ZF 8-speed is less jerky in traffic or when maneuvering while parking.

Also surprised the S4 lost by half a length from a roll...that is usually the type of race that AWD cars fair poorly in.

Edit: I realize my question was answered. I need to try it! So is anyone else using the race mode tune with their e85 blend? I was under the impression that it's strictly made for 100 octane only.

Can you actually do that safely with e85? What's the process like? Mix some pure 91/93 with e85? What's the ratio?

I've never tried race mode with my GIAC tune yet since I don't have access to 100 octane.

BMWs are generally cheaper to lease than the competitive model of Audi. Audi's are generally cheaper to buy than the competitive model of BMW.
BMW tends to be far more aggressive on pricing adjustments, residual values and interest rates / money factors. There is a reason that BMW sells 5 of their 3/4 series cars for every 2 A4/S4's.

The 335is were a limited run car, not unlike the 1M, so BMW never offered the lease residuals, money factor and discounts that are common on just about every other BMW.

When I was looking at buying my S5 or an E92 M3, there was a 335is in the showroom which I asked about for grins. The salesperson basically said he could get me into the M3 for about the same price/month on a lease.

As you said, 335s now can be had in the $500-$550/mo range, which is around what my two 335s cost me. Leasing Audis is painfully more unless you get a crazy deal to lower cap cost.

They also let customers do balloon financing, which allows people who can't afford these cars to have a cheaper monthly payment but screws them at the end of the loan term because the majority cannot afford the lump sum.

also there are two gimmicks i see running lately to get people to "afford" BMW's .. first i saw was BMW doing leases for 320i for $199/month .. lets people say yes i have a brand new BMW .. next i saw was a pyramid scheme called you should be here which allows people to lease any BMW they want for free by selling Vacations .. you have to keep selling to keep the car.. if you stop then the payment is back on y ou
