View Full Version : Need some advice about APR while I am at work :P

Hey guys, normally I would take the time to search for my answer, but right now I cannot.

Im at work (Best buy) and am accessing the page via different link through the system (we use IE for only store purposes :P)

So I have to make this quick..

I need to be chipped within this week; thats it, no more BSing, I need to make a decision.

My options:

GIAC X (I am MY 2001.5) my nearest GIAC dealer is about 45 mins away in the next state (MA.)

APR ... now my I have the following questions; 1) APR will give me free upgrades for my chip, does this mean different programs? For instance, if I get there 1.8T program, if I ever plan on going T28 (like APR SIII), will they update my software for free?

If this is the case, can I also souce my own parts for the SIII upgrade myself? I.E buy the turbo seperately, etc etc.

I know if I go GIAC, I can always go K04 if I am bored. But having a K03 sport, I dont think I would be TOO thrilled to have a K04 due to similiarities...

I need some help guys, I want to hit the track soon enough, before the season is over...Help me out!

*btw I type fast so dont say search :P *

TIA!

go with the x chip
later on down the line get a ko4 and injectors. and call it a day.
my quick advice and opinion.

From what I've heard, GIAC X would be the best.

APR gives software updates not upgrades. When you buy Windows 2000(if anyone's ever bought it) you get free service packs, but you don't get Windows XP for free. APR will give you an upgrade bonus, which is usually multiple programs, GIAC gives you like $200 bucks off a K04 program if you have their chip. APR does not use a T28, I think it's a GT28r and they will not sell their software seperatly, you gotta buy their kit.

And, I don't think there is such a thing as a K03 "sport", but I could be wrong.

A K03 sport would be a hybrid K03 with K04 features, hence why the X chip is only available for DBW k03 sport models (the 01')

Looks like im goin GIAC then.

I'd Say x-chip. i've read bout the guys with 01.5 x-chip holding close to other years with the k04.... so that's what i'd do. plus they're closeby, big bonus. enjoy.

ya I hear they have the same compressor wheel, but I think the extra power in the 01 models comes from the VVT.

Do a search on the older k03's and youll see a difference in the newer ones...the VVT in my engine doesnt allow me to boost high with the X chip, the newer k03 sport does.

APR will give you the upgrades, but look at the last time they had an upgrade. I have had problems with my car pinging with the APR chip and if I call APR they say it has to be the fuel I'm using. No matter where I buy fuel it will almost always causing pinging under a load. Get the X-chip. The only reason I got the APR is because they had the closest dealer to me (3.5 hr drive). I drove to get the chip from ECS tuning. The first chip didn't work so they put a second chip in. It took about 6 hours.

Looks like im going x chip,...

But I have one concern, Ive been reading about 01's having throttle cut off with boost over 20 psi...would this be true for the X chip, since it peaks at 22-23 psi?

I hope the ATP elim's work for my MY still, too. Or else I am going to be sad... :(

6 hours does it really take that long

I don't see why the negative comments w/APR. I was a their shop to get chipped and so far no problems with performance that puts a smile on my face. I do realize the GIAC software is more agressive, but also has been known to throw it in limp mode from time to time (from what I've read).

Maybe it's the APR dealers that have bad customer service???

I also have a sport K03 - the GIAC X Chip look to be my next mod.

1 question though - whats the MPG gain/loss with the chip?

Also - other than a new DV (which I have already) what else would be a good idea to put on?

downpipe plus exhaust and maybe a fmic if car gets heatsoaked often

Exhaust was step 2.

Any word on the MPG difference?

MR VTEC
09-28-2005, 08:07 AM
it will be relatively the same maybe a little less. MPG all depends on how you drive if you keep the car out of high rpms you will conserve more gas whether you are chipped or not.

It took 6 hours because they made me wait over an hour. They installed the chip and drove my car around. When I went to leave after the chip was installed the car wouldn't start. They screwed around wondering what it could be for another hour, and then decided to take the ecu out to check the chip. Whom ever soldered the chip in did a piss poor job so they put another chip in and that took about 3 hours for some reason. Then I drove 3.5 hours home.

Sweet, I dont let mine get over 3k anyway.

I was worried that the chip would increase the fuel into the chamber, and subsequently less MPG.

actually i get better mileage after my GIAC (non X) chip...

i boost around 20psi, which is weird cuz its a 1bar chip...

if im on it hard most of the tank, the mileage is horrible, but right now, im not.

I'm trying to keep this on topic but...

Isn't APR better for MY 2000 and earlier? Meaning, doesn't the APR chip post larger gains for 2000 and earlier? Only reason I seem to recall this is because x-chip is only for 2001+, and the GIAC post before that isn't as good.

Is this a false statement, or am I recalling this correctly?

that's b/c the cars come w/ 150bhp before 2000 and 170 after

Im pretty sure the results and gains are all the same.

Eh, whatever. Next wednesday, its finally gonna happen:

- APR reflash (93 oct, 100 oct)
- AWE boost gauge
- Brand new B6 17" Sport rims with fresh Michellin Pilots :)

Pics up soon :P

ummm, dahlback?

has more tq than the x-chip, 271tq w/exhaust

also they are TUV approved, so #s are conservative

My APR dealer is 3 miles away. Theyre also going to help me out in diff ways, since Ill be making more purchases from them.

Also, I cant seem to find a Dahlback dealer, so Im assuming Ill have to purchase a new ECU or send one in? I dont have time for that...what is the cost for Dahlback?

beejohn
09-28-2005, 10:04 PM
an az advertiser has them on sale right now for $499

yes you have to send them your ecu and they will ship it back just like every other chip tuner

tough decision since apr is local. i would only go w/apr if you plan on going stg3, or stg3+ in the future. otherwise x-chip or dahlback to get the full potential out of k03.

Although Dahlback and GIAC get excellent results out of the k03, I really just want a smooth powered upgrade to last me until I go stage III+...

Then get an APR chip, you can't go wrong doing that.
