View Full Version : Driveshaft limits? Realistically...

Hi everyone,
Been a while since I've posted on here as Ive nearly completed my S3 CDL forged GTX3076r build.
I'm yet to post a full thread but thought I'd wait until I have some figures to back it up.

So as above really guys, what can the shafts take realistically?
There's been no expense spared so far but as far as the gearbox and shafts are concerned, minus an APR/southbend stage 3 endurance clutch with SMF and a neuspeed short shift, its standard.

Any help/advise would be great.
Thanks in advance

i wouldn't worry about it. the driveshaft is pretty sturdy, and a gtx3076 isn't going to blow it up.

Thanks for the reply @mec
By drive shafts I actually mean each individual shaft. I know you guys have a different name for them lol.
More concerned about the 6000 rpm launch control that I'll be using allongside it.
What's your views on that?

Hm not sure I follow, do you mean the axles?

I've only heard of one guy snapping them, and he was on an extremely lowered suspension, which was placing lots of stress on the axle joints.

It's all in how you launch though. You can get a good launch without destroying axles that's for sure.

You may also be able to grab some axles from an 01e like an s4, I'm not sure if they bolt up but if they do they will absolutely handle whatever you've got

Many B5 S4 guys have snapped axles while launching hard, but it almost always happened at the drag strip due to the extra grip of the prepped track surface.

I have not heard of any issues with axles breaking on the B7 (A4/S4 or RS4) and would not be concerned.

That's the one lol, axles.

I'm on Eibach pro street coilovers and Eibach anti roll bars. It's lowered but not on its arse.

So a v8 b7 S4 shafts will do?
Iam abit heavy on the launch, like I just drop the clutch and hold on.

That's very good to know but I've had some seriously bad luck with this build, if its going to happen to anyone, it's gonna be me [emoji23]

I snapped two axles launching my car. I think @mec was talking about me but not sure. Anyway my ride hight didn't have anything to do with the axle snapping.

Ok, so I'm guessing your running some nice torque then? I was going to limit the torque to get less lag for the 1/4 mile.
What did you replace them with?

I'd like to think like that, but I've got an important drag race where I hope to make a big impression and set a top 1/4 mile time/record for the A4 B7 in the UK.
I don't want it to shit its self In front of everyone lol!

Well the only solution I found was to have "the driveshaft shop" make custom axles for $500 a piece so about 2k for all four.

It's not too bad lol. You should really go and see if you even have problems before dumping money on new axles IMO.

Welp thats embarassing lol. it happens though. I think i broke down like 3 times at the track. twice because my rear coolant hose kept blowing off, and another few times from hose couplers exploding

Hi, yes I currently hold the k04 1/4 mile record of 13.4 @ 101 mph, it handled a 5500rpm launch quite well
360bhp @ 370lbft
I'm more concerned about the 500bhp and 500lbft lol

It was fine on the previous build but we've pumped the power up considerably.
I'd rather not spend any more money if I can get away with it

When your car is done we should have another betting poll for the dyno run.

Don't forget we get 99ron out of the pump over here. @26 psi we're seeing 450bhp with no meth and 110bar requested

Nice! So 99ron is equal to our U.S. 95octance, and you get that from the pump, lucky! My car can only run on 91octane (95ron). What's your uncorrected wheel torque/horsepower?

No 95ron is our standard unleaded, 99ron is shell v power which is 99 octane.
I will have dyno results in a few weeks when the final map is done. We've worked out bhp by maf readings and AFR. It's only an estimate in all honesty.

It's going back for another map after ive tested it to find any issues if any, then I will have the dyno results.

The k04 hybrid was 370bhp and 370lbft

Yes and absolutely obliterating an Audi S3 8p that was running them figures.
We compared them on several runs and found the B7 was pulling it apart.

I didn't, my tuner did based on the same build. As I mentioned earlier we also compared it with an S3 that was pushing them figures and they were proven. It's not gospel, it's just an idea.
