if i have a 2000 a4 1.8t fwd 5spd, will a transmission from a 98 fwd 5spd a4 work with my car? thanks in advance

It should work since they are both the same. Does the A4 2.8 come in a fwd, if so I wonder if that gear box would fit in the fwd A4 1.8t.

I think the 2.8 is by default a Quattro.

Looking at the specs for the 2000 2.8, it came in a fwd or quattro for the sedan and quattro only in the avant.

^^^ i can get a used one for raelly cheap, so i thought i might use it as a back up. the thing i was worried about was maybe the nDBW and DBW motors had different transmissions....

Nope all the B5's use the same trans. I am running a ndbw 2.8 quattro trans in my dbw 2000.
