I bought my b5 and it was smoking a lot once it warmed up so I changed the turbo with anther stock one (used) and it still smokes. my mechanic says it has to be driven to "blow all the oil out". Is that even a thing? Could it be bad oil return lines? I also need to replace a purge valve.

Depending on the failure mode of the old turbo it is typical to get oil in the exhaust which must then be burned off. It's good practice to replace the lines when replacing turbos though.

I'll give that a shot as well. The turbo is off a passat I believe or maybe a golf. runs fine but it still has a few codes. I'm going to look into it further this weekend
