View Full Version : Torque spec anybody?

Hello,

In my recent wheel bearing work, I removed a bolt unnecessarily. Despite wide searching, I have not found the proper tightening torque.

The bolt is the B8-specific LOWER pinch bolt that grips the lower ball joint in the steering knuckle. It threads into a threaded barrel in the knuckle itself (unlike the upper knuckle pinch bolt, which in B8s has an elastic stop-nut external to the knuckle assembly).

The torque spec in question cannot be very high, unless the threads in the aluminum knuckle are some kind of hardened insert. I guestimated 40 lb. ft. just to get my S4 back on the road. All other removed bolts (e.g. caliper carrier bolts) were replaced and torqued to spec.

Thanks!!!

Thanks pooker for the reply. I did remove this related nut as well, but managed to find the torque info you generously provided.

The B8 has THREE points of connection at the lower end of the knuckle: A) the steering/tie rod (front most), B) front lower control arm, and C) the c-shaped rear lower control arm (rear most).

"A" and "C" both have ball joints that attach with nuts--nut on top in the case of "A" and below in the case of "C".

"B" on the other hand has a nut connecting the front lower control arm to the ball joint and a BOLT pinching the other end of said ball joint into the knuckle. This lower knuckle pinch bolt threads into the knuckle itself, to grip the barrel of the cylindrical ball joint housing (no separate nut). It is this pinch bolt for which I seek the torque spec.

Many, many thanks to anyone who might find/share this spec!!
