View Full Version : Strange issue at the track yesterday
I did a HPDE at Rivers Edge road course yesterday in my S4, it was the first I'd taken it on the track, car was a lot of fun considering it's weight and weak brakes. The issue I had was coming out of right hand corners as soon as I got on the gas the car would completely cut out. Like hitting a hard limiter. Weird thing is it was fine every time on left hand corners. I thought it might be fuel starvation because it seemed to get worse throughout the day, but I filled my tank before my last session and it kept happening. I didn't get a CEL or EPL light, so I'm kind of dumbfounded as of now. I will scan it for codes tomorrow and see what comes up. I'm APR stage2 93 octane map running chevron 94 octane gas with 0 ethanol. Any ideas what's going on?

I took my car to some crazy roads last year for QDM. I noticed this happened a couple times on some hard right turns. My traction control was completely off, APR sponsored it so they were there, I mentioned it to them and they never heard of it. That was the only time I was able to make that happen, but going again next week so we will see.
Strange, my traction control and stability control were off as well, I'll let you know if I get it figured out.

Interesting, never experienced this, but since it happened always in right hand turns, I'd assume the issue is physical in nature, rather than software. I just got back from a HPDE at grattan, which has some of the most intense off camber turns I've experienced, although admittedly most of the serious turns are lefts. Will follow this thread to see what you find.
I took my car to Lime rock and there are some good right handers there. Never had this issue. Did you fully depress the traction button until all of the nannies were off?

Only the first level of traction control SHOULD interfere with powertrain cut. But who knows. Performing the VCDS scan should help.
I fully disengaged all the nannies

Mine was 100% off.

Is it like a the car retards the gas pedal? Get on the gas and nothing, nothing then power returns but gently? I've had that problem only when making hard left turns. Not saying it won't/doesn't happen the other way but has only happened when turning left. Initially I thought the clutch in the dsg was slipping but its just a weird sensation.

Mine was I was making an uphill sharp right curve going up a mountain. I Had it floored in 2nd gear traction completely off and it just wouldn't give it any more power. It was like traction control was on, but I am 100% certain it was off. Happened a couple times.
Mine would happen on the 2 right handers at the track, perfect on the left corners, motor would completely shut off for a second, then fire again as if nothing happened.

Might have to do with the LPFP...definitely sounds like fuel starvation. I was reading about the 1LE Camaro that was flying around the track, and it said they added fuel pickup points, specifically
Beefier half-shafts are supposed to help cope with the improved traction, wheel bearings come from the ZL1, and the fuel system has been upgraded with the ZL1’s high-capacity fuel pump and additional fuel pickups to avoid high-g fuel starvation.

Maybe the rest of us aren't cornering hard enough lol [:D] what type of turns are we talking here (speeds/apex point/G's/duration)? What types of tires you running?

That is what I was going to say fuel pickup issue? How much fuel was in the tank?

He did mention in the OP that there the issue persisted after filling up the tank.
I was pushing pretty hard, 2nd and 3rd gear corners. I run Michelin PSS. Felt like fuel starvation, but continued with a full tank.
https://vimeo.com/126180766 Not sure if this link will work, it's a video my wife took at the track yesterday. Doesn't really capture the issue I was having, just figured I'd throw it up. At bout the 12 second mark the car cuts out for about a second or 2. Which is obviously a long time on track, sorry for the crappy iphone quality
Just a quick update, scanned my car for codes, got u11130. Turned my tune off and problem is still happening, made an appointment next wednesday at RPI equipped. They are the APR dealer that did the tune, hopefully get this sorted out

Was there any description with that code? I remember hearing a similar issue in the C7 camp. I think someone said that the car was recognizing a decrease in oil (or maybe it was fuel?) pressure and throwing the car into a brief limp mode.

Thanks for update. Let us know what they say.
That could be possible, there was a description but I don't have it on me. If that's the case, I would need to sort that out. Otherwise this car won't be much fun at the track. My oil level was all the way up as well.

Ah the Mission track, never knew it was officially named River's Edge. Never had any problems running my S4 there on PSS, however, I did experience what felt like fuel starvation while testing out some R888 outside MRP. Exiting uphill right-hand tight corners, the car would hesitate and not rev past 4K. This was with a 1/4 tank of gas. Refilled and couldn't replicate the issue. This was with full traction on. I've also been low on gas at Mission without issues...
They call the road course Rivers Edge. It's still Mission raceway park, not sure why. My car didn't hesitate at all, just cut out completely then back to normal power, regardless of fuel level.

What code is that? Can you post the actual code with description that it lists? Is it from vag com or a generic obd reader? Thanks.
Mike
It's from a code reader called launch, the mechanic said it was a factory code, i'll put a pic of the scan up here later today
IMG_2666.jpeg here's a pic of the fault code. Function limitation due to received malfunction value?

Yeah that dtc is completely unfamiliar. I've not seen anything like it and it unfortunately gives no explanation of what it is measuring. Do you think you could get your hands on a vag com?
Mike
They have one at RPI where it's going wednesday, I'll post what I find out then.
So I think I have this sorted out now, the shop I go to thought it might be the steering angle sensor, I was quoted $740.00 CDN for the job, with no guarantee's it would solve the problem, dealer told me the same thing because i'm out of warranty. Got the APR v3.0 update and problem solved, no more cutting out. I have no idea why this worked, but obviously it was tune related, got an AWE Coldfront at the same time as well as H&R bars. Car is running very strong now, super happy this is all sorted out.
