View Full Version : B8.5 Power Folding Mirrors?

My wife bought a Q5 a couple years ago and it comes with the power folding mirrors. I see a S4 locally here from time to time parked on the street with its mirrors up, so I assumed they come that way. Apparently that’s an aftermarket mod to make them fold up?

You can buy a kit to convert them. Not sure what years are available though. The link will give you some ideas but I don't see one for the 15.

There are kits available which you can fit to gain this function. Oddly Audi saw fit not to put this on the S4 models, very strange if you ask me:
Folding Mirror Package | A4, S4, RS4 (http://europrice.us/folding-mirror-package-a4-s4-rs4)
Note that with these kits you can select what type of mirror switch works best for you. The all chrome switch is what matches yours now. Also note that delivery is 2-3 weeks for each individual order vs. waiting for inventory to arrive.
If you or anyone else has questions on these kits don't hesitate to shoot over a PM or email:

Cheers,
How come your kit is for 2010 and up, while ECS has one for 2010-2012 and another one for 2013+?
How come your kit is for 2010 and up, while ECS has one for 2010-2012 and another one for 2013+?
Likely because they change the switch to match the 2013+ changeover. The only part that differs between the 2010-2012 and the post-facelift (2013+) is the switch.
With the kits offered on the Europrice site you can select which switch you prefer versus it being set to the year.

Same for all B8's... just need to get the right one if you have side assist.
(correct me if wrong)
Edit: yeah switch is slightly different (aesthetic though right? Chrome?)

There is an early setup (up to '09) and a late setup ('10 or later).
Then you can select which type of mirror switch you prefer, all black, chrome ring on top or all chrome (post-facelift).
No worries about side assist or other functions. They all remain the same and don't have a bearing on the folding mirror setup.

Ah...
I'd LOVE to add this to mine. But 1k in parts plus a PITA install has kept me from doing this for years... even with the GB last year I could not justify it. Maybe if the kit was more like 300-400 range I'd go for it...

Definitely wasn't an option. No idea why Audi didn't let us order this. Pisses me off just about every time I pull into the garage.
My car has this but I'm in UK, there is an option in the C locking menu to auto fold mirrors when the car locks.
Jay007
04-24-2015, 06:15 AM
Don't use the option more than once or twice a year in the Q, and the mirrors on the Q are literally 3 times the size of the S4, so to me its definitely not worth a $1,000 aftermarket mod to have them fold up. I just find it strange that one comes with standard and one isn't even a factory option. The vehicles cost within 3% of one anther and have virtually identical options otherwise. Maybe its a standard on SUV's and not sedans anymore?

It's an option in Europe but not here. I had folding mirrors on a previous car. I used them once in the 4 years I had it.

Yup, my B6 A4 had them, but the B8.5 S4 does not. I rarely park on the street, but did the other day; not having power-folding mirrors was irritating.

Probably but you need the whole assembly plus the switch, but also weirdly they fold differently, they don't fold up and in, but just in like the old B6 did

Although it is nice to have, when I had them in my 335i, I never used them. Until I get really bored with the car, and scratch off every other thing on my list, it probably won't be done.

I'll tell you why. The B6/B7 S4s were designed and marketed directly against the M3. So Audi felt compelled to include all the bells and whistles they could. When the B8 was released , it was designed to compete against the 335i. In order to bring the cost down, certain features were left off the car. Folding mirrors were casualty. Recaro seats as well. But IMHO, Audi did a great job with the B8/8.5 S4. Released in Europe as a 2009 model, it is still far and away better than a new 335i/435i . I don't miss the folding mirrors, But what I don't understand is that the 2010 Prem + did not have mirros that dipped in reverse. Also there are a myriad of features like oil temp, having all the windows open and close with the key fob , etc that are not activated from the factory. It costs Audi NOTHING to do this. Fortunately we have a vag com!

Man... you are making me really tempted to get this mirror! I skipped on the GB last year as it was still a bit over my budget but I can't stop thinking that my parent's B7 has them, my brother's Tiguan has them but not my B8.5!
Not to mention the B8 mirror actually looks pretty cool when folded. Why can't they include this in the car [:(]

The ones on my 328d don't go automatically, and there's no setting in the iDrive to do it. I think it can be coded, but IIRC when my wife asked the Genius at the second delivery he said it wasn't possible. Just gotten used to hitting the button now before I get out.

Yes , but that was later in the game. The B6 S4 WAs the direct competitor to the M3. At that point there was no RS4 in the US. B6/B7 S4s are basically the same car.

Op, was it me? I bought the kit from a forum sponsor. Install is not for the faint of heart, but it was a fun project. I like having it a lot, should have come stock. They fold automatically when I lock, and unfold when I start up the car.

Within the first few days of owning the car, I wondered why I couldn't find the controls for power folding mirrors, then found out this wasn't a feature the car had. Really disappointed, especially it being an S4, much less a Prestige package. I did look in the owner's manual and the position for folding the mirrors was at the six o'clock position, on the power mirror control knob. Obviously, though, that's for the A4, and isn't that strange? I would like to have the power folding mirrors, but not at a cost of $1,000 as an after market expense. I also miss having the mirrors tilt down when shifting in reverse. I mean, come one, my wife's Murano has this feature!

I'm 3 weeks into ownership, during the buying process it is one of the features i overlooked as I was so excited on getting the car home. I did not even think about checking for that, i mean it should be standard by now! I also failed to check that the vehicle did not have a usb port for media :( Small gripes, overall love the car.

I have 2015 Prestige S4 and my passenger-side mirror tilts down when in reverse. My car is out in the parking lot (I can look later), but you probably just need to leave the little adjustment knob selecting the passenger-side mirror, since that was how my old B6 A4 worked.

yup the folding was never an option but you still can have the mirrors tilt when you shift into reverse. just leave the mirror switch on either the driver or passenger side mirror selected

The folding mirror packages include electronically folding mirrors. Twist the switch, the mirrors fold. If you set them to fold when you lock the car they will also electronically fold then as well.

Everything comes in the kit for the install. Door switch, plate cover, folding motorized mirrors. You swap them out and re-code them or enable them via vagcom and you're done. Like Alex said you can manually fold them every time by twisting the switch, or going to MMI and setting them to fold every time you arm the car.
Definitely one of the best mods for this car that should've come standard.

I have had and installed this myself already on my 09. I know what it is. Just confirming that the kits for the newer year models (B8.5) fold up and at an angle when installed. I hadn't seen any videos or photos of it until now.
I think I have my answer though. svander - any chance you can post a video from the side?

I agree with a lot of people on here that this is a mod that should come standard on a car in this class but seeing it did not I am trying to work with a company on getting maybe a group buy together as I do not want to pay almost $1000 for this mod. This is not something that is for sure yet but just want to see approximately how many people would be interested in something like this in a group buy?

It's not on US cars to keep costs down. It's typical for us to get decontented models because of the costs of exporting vehicles to the U.S., especially when it's not a high volume selling car.

I have a 14 so our mirrors are the same. Certainly would appreciate a video! I've seen some on youtube of other models and I'm curious if they work the same way.

My b6 s4 has folded mirrors and I assumed they all did. My brother bought a b8 s5 and found out his did not fold in and I thought it was a s5 thing. I recently bought a b8.5 s4 and found out after the purchase the mirrors don't fold. W/e.. It's not a deal breaker but it does make me feel better when I park in busy streets and parking lots when I fold the mirrors on the b6.

Well - why also don't US spec S4 cars have the front freakin' parking sensors that can now be ordered on 2016 A4s (but not S4s)???? I mean REheheheheally????? Yes, that's correct. You can order the full visual front/rear parking system on an A4, but only rear on the S4s still. Does this mean you can dealer retrofit an S4 with the fronts because the modules are the same? Likely. But AYFKM?
It's kinda reeedonkulous all around.

If anyone is still interested, ECS just dropped their price for the kit down below $750 with free ship and no tax. Out of stock until late Sep though.

I'm new here and just picked up a '15 S4. I was absolutely blown away to realize the mirrors don't fold. I've got a fully loaded S4.. never even thought of confirming. The geometry (e.g., dumbo ears) of these mirrors makes it essential to have folding capability. Does anyone have a DIY for this? I want to scope the work before diving in.
Also do we know if I can have these painted prior to shipping? Does anyone supply that service? Would like to match body color.

There is one somewhere, it is not a super easy job and quite expensive to source the parts.
Body colored mirrors: Easy if you have a common colored car. Find an A4/A5/A6 and swap with them. They will probably even throw in some money for the Alu ones off your car.
Folding mirrors: Not cheap($800) and it is just the base, everything else you swap from the OEM ones. Thus you would still need body colored mirrors.

Thanks.. that is more involving than I'd like. I absolutely hate taking door panels apart. They never seem to go back quite as well as they came off.

My fault ecs had the complete package with part breakdown but no numbers. You can probably do a little copy n pasting to find the number.

Can anyone chime in on what is needed after installation?
Do I need to go to the dealer to have them coded? Can I code them myself? If so a step by step with Vagcom/Carista would be greatly appreciated. Don't have either yet but plan to purchase one

Yup, my B6 A4 had them, but the B8.5 S4 does not. I rarely park on the street, but did the other day; not having power-folding mirrors was irritating.
Yep! Cause taking the 2 seconds to manually fold them up made me want to punch my mom! ;P
Seriously though...I must be missing why this is such a desirable mod. The only reason you'd want to fold them up is if you're parked on the street and don't want your mirror to get dinged, yes?? I guess cause I rarely park on the street it's not a huge issue for me.

I would love to have this mod as my garage is barely wide enough for two cars. A few questions from reading this thread:
1) If needed, could you still manually fold the mirrors with the power ones installed -- or will you just wreck the motor? Thinking in event of motor failure (who knows after install).
2) Who has recently installed this? Everything I've seen is from a couple years back. Looking for feedback from people who've had this installed for a while.
3) Can you code the mirrors with Carista or do you need VAGCOM?
4) Any group buy possible? As many have mentioned, the price is a bit steep.

Carista lists it on their website that it can be done. However, when I asked them via email, they said they can't guarantee it
I highly doubt you can manually fold any autofold mirror as it's gear driven. I'd be in for a group buy too. ECS's price of $800 isn't too bad but it's the delivery time, must be shipped slow boat. I tried to contact a supplier in Germany as I found their site had really good prices but they have failed to reply. Anyone have a friend in Germany to coordinate a buy? I have all the part numbers needed for the swap for a B8.5:
8K1857410AJ01C 1piece
8T0919173A 1 piece
8K1857409AJ01C 1 piece
8K0959565EWEP 1 piece

My entire kit cost me just £280 ($395). That included shipping from Lithuania to the UK, and mine are B8 S5 version. New old stock from an Audi dealership.
The controller and switch I purchased here in the UK for £60 ($83). So a grand total of £340 ($478).

Did you not need the window controls? ECS sells the mirror kit, but you need to tear apart your door to replace the control panel in order to have the proper controls.

I have both on my Q7 which though obviously a different platform works well. I also believe if memory serves that a few folks had both and added this mod.

Didn't see a reply to your questions, so here it is.
1. Yes, you can manually fold/unfold them. I do this often after a wash to get in there and dry everything up. Doesn't seem to affect its function.
2. I did this mod myself about 3 years back. I followed the DIY previously linked. It was easier than I expected, just took some time. Hardest part was removing the silver mirror caps!
3. I believe I saw this last time I was in Carista app, but can't confirm at the moment. I had used VCDS back then.
