View Full Version : Tires rubbing - how to fix? Standard 255/35R19 lowered fitment

My B8 S4 seems to be an anomaly because it rubs with wheel and tire combos that reportedly fit perfectly on every other B8!

The car is lowered to the standard 26" ground to fender and has -1.9 camber front and rear.

Combo 1: OE 19" wheels with 255/35R19 Michelin Super Sports and 5mm front 10mm rear spacers. Rubs front when cornering hard and rear rub on big compressions.

Combo 2: 19x9.5" +40 with 255/35R19 Michelin Super Sports. Rubs front and rear when cornering and on compressions. Front tires poke out beyond the fenders.

Combo 3: 19x8.5" +38 with 245/35R19 Michelin Super Sports. Rubs front when cornering hard.

I see people posting that they run 19x9.5" +40 (sometimes with spacers added!) and 255/35R19 Michelins with no rubbing and no mention of fender modifications. Really [confused]

The rear rubbing on my car seems to be at around 12 o'clock on the flexible inner fender liner. Any tricks for fixing this? Heat? Cutting? The liner is flexible so it can't be bent into a different position.

Where the front rubbing is harder to pinpoint. It might be rubbing on the fender mount + screw at 10 o'clock (driver's side view) but I bent it up into the wheel well and the rubbing situation didn't really improve.

Any tips or advice for how to cure the rubbing would be appreciated because I really miss cornering hard and don't want to go back to a 100% stock set up.

I was just rubbing on 19x8.5 +32 with 255/35/19 with H&R oe springs (no spacers). I ended up changing tires to 245/35/19.

you can roll the fender or try tucking the fender liner first and see. theres too many different tires some sidewalls stick out more than others.

Is it rubbing only on one side?
My friend's 13' S4 which he bought new was off centered on it's frame... with OE wheels the left side had virtually flush fitment and right side had an inch... The dealership said no car is perfect LOL... he had to run spacers on one side to balance it out... he ended up getting rid of that car...
Check to see if left fitment is different to right. You should not be rubbing with that set up.

Also - check the condition of your suspension. Worn shock can cause more than normal sway.

IMO:
Rear camber you should be running -1.5
Front -1.7

The front and rear rubbing is on both sides.

The suspension is brand new and is in perfect condition.

Re the camber settings, my extra negative camber is a benefit for track use and helps to minimize the rubbing.

How much do you weigh? [:D]

In all seriousness... I don't know what to tell you other than try some tires that don't have suck square side walls...

Rolling the fenders would seem to be the easiest fix other than getting new wheels with a different offset or different tires.

I was really hoping to avoid fender modifications and the mystery is how so many other B8 owners claim to be using the same wheel and tire specs as my car with no rubbing. Maybe they don't drive hard enough!

I'm about 25 3/4" fender to ground all around (Bilstein PSS10's). I did have some SLIGHT rubbing in the rear but it was only hitting the carpet fender liner and it only rubbed on big dips on the freeway. Only happened like 3 times. I THINK I've actually fixed this by manually denting/massaging the carpet fender liner at the edges (about the 12 o'clock position). It kind of sticks out a bit if you feel just under the lip. I was able to compress it all along the edge of the fender to give some more clearance for the rear tires. I haven't had any rubbing in the front.

rolling fenders is hardly a modification. You won't know it's even done, it won't affect resale, or result in future problems.

remove the liner screw first.

just go have it done.

if you don't know, this is what it is. The rear cannot be rolled, however. There is nothing to roll.

I know, been there done that, and was hoping to avoid potentially cracking the paint which is always a risk when rolling. What is the trick to stopping the rubbing on the rear inner liner material?

Did you finally ever find a rub free setup?
