Have an '11 S4. So was driving on 76 outside philly and alarms started going off in the car and scared the crap out of me. Cars Temp gauge immediately went all the way up and said I had no coolant turn engine off. Thankfully I was near home and called Audi assist. Has them flat bed my car of Audi of Warrington in Pa ( absolutely amazing dealership btw. Such perfect service) and they fixed her right up. Apparently this isn't an uncommon issue.
Thought I'd share! Scary issue but great dealership took care of me. Glad I bought a CPO car! Paid nothing :-)

35,900. Literally just had the 35k service done so when the car said I had no coolant I had a hunch it was the thermostat

yea thats about time it would die out, congrats on losing your thermostat failure virginity, you're officially a member. smooth sailing from here, except if your mechatronic unit hasn't crapped out yet. that'll be next.
might as well go a head and tattoo CPO on ur neck

Bump.
Mine was replaced in early February as part of the fuel rail replacement recall. Had it at the dealer on Saturday for a between scheduled service oil/filter change and they told me the t-stat was leaking. Left it there and it's being replaced (again) today.

I paid 1,067 at an Audi Dealer last week, so I would hope any other place would be cheaper. I suggest KMD tuning they are awesome. It is more up North, exit 156 on parkway.
How common is this issue? My warranty runs out this month. 2011 S4 with 23,500 miles. No issues so far. Just waiting for that warranty to expire for the issues to arise! :)

It's not "if", it's "when". Can't be many forum members that have more than 75k and their original T-stat.

Just got mine replaced for the first time at 97K miles. But I know I am one of the few.
Dare I ask, would they replace this under warranty if you're TD1?

Is this limited to the B8's, or can 8.5 owners expect an eventual tstat failure as well?

What would be nice is knowing if the newer t-stats revisions (in the 2014s or whatever it was claimed) fix the problem for certain. Then the guys with cars with some mileage that have not yet broke could do the work proactively knowing it would at least last for another 100k+.
Yeah, so if you get it replaced, they (Audi) is using a "better" part now? So, once replaced it should last longer?
