I have a DSG and have a love hate relationship with my exhaust, 50% of the time I wanted LOUDER, 50% I want quiet, I feel like weather changes make the exhaust sound change inside the cabin, its of course the sound between 2-3k rpms, it is especially awful while the trans shifts under half throttle, like when you are kinda getting on it, putting around sounds deep and mean and I love it, stomping on the pedal sounds amazing and I love that too, just everything in between is pretty rough, I drive mostly in manual mode so I can control the rpms otherwise it would be awful
Options:
1) Dynamat trunk - I am doing this anyway since I am doing a custom JL 13w7 install, not sure if the sound deadening will do anything for drone/cabin noise from exhaust
2) Suck it up and purchase the Milltek rear resonators, they are about 1100 which I can easily pick up another whole new system for used like AWE, but they sure do seam quiet at least in , too quiet
3) Custom rear resonators. There are AWE resonators in the classifieds, buy these and have exhaust shop make custom rears, I would have an AWE/Milltek hybrid, looks like a low cost option, no clue what sound I would get
4) Varex valved rear mufflers, controlled by a hand switch, no idea how this would sound but parts and labor would likely be 1k, great sounds and video on other cars just no 3.0 supercharged that I can find http://www.xforce.com.au/products/varex-mufflers
5) Sell exhaust system and get another used, like AWE touring, I could probably sell mine for about what it would cost to get one used, but I dont have down pipes
Ughh dont know what to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try using an x pipe in place of the first resonator.

I have Milltek non-res installed last December. Love the sound. Have no issue what you described. I guess it's a matter of preference.

My installer has a Milltek resonated down pipes (sold his S4 last year) that i'm sure he would let go for a minimal price if you are interested I can ask him.

It does sound awesome, but you have a 6mt so it's a little different for normal daily driving I would assume

Had the AWE Touring with resonated DP installed last week; the price was ok, otherwise I would have gone with the Milltek resonated system.
I was an idiot and forgot to pull the fuse to the soundaktor. To date, some drone around 1500, not louder than stock though. I would guess that the Milltek with resonated DP would be quieter overall.

You're just lucky you bought a 6MT - save the manuals!!
Milltek specifically recommends using the resonated version for DSG cars as the 2k-3k drone is well documented.
Sorry to hear about your problem OP original owner was a dumbass

Am I missing something, what resonated downpipes? Or are you all referring to the front resonator/muffler?

I have the non-res system on my dsg and after rereading, I see what I missed. USA may have been referring to a whole resonated system and not just resonated downpIpes.

Shouldn't read this post. Now you have a bug in your head[:)]
I have non-res Milltek and have no drone. The sound is not too loud to wake up my neighbors, just right to my ears. I have MT though.

Yep. Can't drive automatic. Just not for me. If b9 came out with no manual I'll buy m3 instead, assuming it'll be MT.

Don't get me wrong, the exhaust is great, its the DSG that puts in bad rpms and loads that that bring out the worst sounds, I drive mostly in manual mode to control the load, I wish I had a manual now believe me

The DSG Cars need resonated downpipes to get rid of the drone. I would look into the AWE downpipes/catbacks, seems like they have a combination that would suit your wants. Shoot me a PM if you would like speak further. [:D]

It may drone but I don't really notice it or am just used to loud exhaust. I really like it and sometimes wish it were a little louder.

I would avoid hacking up the current exhaust because someone else will likely want it.
Just buy yourself one of the AWE Touring exhausts (I have one) and you will probably be a lot more happy than having to frankenstein various pieces until you get the sound you want...unless you're into that kind of process. It is in fact a process because changing pieces can alter the sound in ways that you might not be expecting. These manufacturers spend a bunch of R&D time on the tubing, resonators and mufflers to get the sound right...we consumers don't really have that kind of time nor the ability to just jump in and slap on 5 different resonators not to mention driving them around during each iteration. Some of us have been lucky to get the right combo but most of us just go with a pre-fabricated example like the AWE Touring (which seems to be the go-to exhaust here and I personally love it).
I will note that the AWE Touring is a fantastic example not just because it eliminates all drone in typical driving (when you're just maintaining speed not accelerating). It also sounds bad ass when accelerating especially at WOT. During an autocross event, this past Sunday, no less than 10 people came up and told me how awesome it sounded and I was surprised because I was in the midst of a bunch of more awesome sounding (to me) cars like a bunch of new Corvettes (1 of them a new Z06). I really think it is the best of both worlds and likely to fulfill your 50/50 feelings in the OP. They can be had used at roughly the price that you will be able to sell the Milltek one...Milltek makes awesome exhausts too that are sought after so you should have little trouble selling it.
