I was going to order a set of summer tires today but the guy at costco said I need a 96Y. I realize this speed rating is slightly higher than a W (300km/h vs 270km/h), but is it required by Audi? He seemed to think it is and said it could cause insurance problems if the vehicle got in an accident with less than a 96Y.
My next question is, what about my winter tires? I have Wintersport 3D's and they're only rated like 96V. So same weight rating but way less on the speed rating. If I'm allowed to use these on my vehicle why would the rules change for summer? Or is the Costco guy BS'ing me?

You'll be fine with W.

if the weight and speed ratings are inline you don't have to worry. the weight rating is not something you really even need to look at in these car unless you are going to a really narrow tire for winter or something wierd. I run 205's on my B5S4 for snow duty and they are T rated I think. It really does not matter that much. I am a bit of a safety nut though. If your tires are rated for 140 I would tend not to push that limit. but if you are on the fence between a W and a Y speed rating I don't think the B8S4 car really push those limits anyway so don't sweat it.

Sure
Unless the Autobahn runs through your home town, you probably don't need speed rated tires!
Ok, or you track your car, Autobahn style.

For speed rating, it's ok to use W rated, as long as you aren't delimited and going over 170 mph.
I'd make sure your weight/load rating is OE spec. Weight rating is specified for the vehicle with full load. With 5 passengers and luggage, you could be pushing the limits of the vehicle (which worsen if you are in sustained highway speeds in high heat locations). If you get a blow-out, the liability might be on you if it's found out that the tires equipped are less than the recommended load rating.

What tracks in the US would you even be able to exceed 170? thats gotta be a long trip up to that speed.
