View Full Version : How screwed am I?

I was driving on the highway earlier, a "low oil pressure pump" signal came on, and then my car stopped accelerating, and it wouldn't turn on anymore.

So I take it the cam follower blew up...

All these codes popped up today, all new.

You really should charge your phone.

Did you keep driving with the low oil pressure light until the car shut off? If so, I would expect the worst. It may be seized

Royally, it seems. :/

Yes, I did. I've had the low pressure oil light on before (in 2013, I think), and it was due to low oil, which I replace about every 5k, so I didn't think it was directly affecting my cam, hence why I kept driving, and the car kept going smooth so I thought there was no issue, until I couldn't accelerate anymore and that's when I immediately shut her off.

Well, if it's totally fucked, it may be time to move on to the B8 platform. I heard the repair costs and labor for a camshaft that breaks inside the engine are extremely expensive.

It's because you use Android.

Fix it yourself, what's the worst that can happen? You spend some time getting to learn the insides of your engine, some $$ for parts? Maybe you can do it yourself. If the engine is worth saving....big IF, no need to trash the car.

You have my empathy man. Hope you get some idea of the damage. Good luck

So... There is a Low Oil Warning message and a Oil Pressure Warning message.

Which one was it? Yes your answer to this question is important.

Lol coming from an IPHONE USER...

iphone was made for regular boring people.

anyhow... yes you need to tell us what you really are having an issue with... for all you know it could just be the oil filter ceasing because whoever did your oil change last used a fram oil filter or a mobil 1 oil filter.

and check the cam yourself... it's easy... hardest part is getting to the bottom hoses.

Low Oil Pressure Message.

I had the oil changed 3 days ago before the incident.

Also, I'm trying to work on the car today, but it won't even turn on anymore, not even the electric. Completely dead.

I'll check the cam in meantime. Will update later.

Unable work on the car, without getting any electric power on it to continue reading codes. I replaced the battery with a new one, nothing is happening.

Towing it to the dealer.

P0340 has to be the culprit for not even letting me give the car an electric start

Oh, and the cam follower was fine.

This is quite a bizarre problem.

You had an oil change 3 days before this happened yet you had a low oil light. Have you checked you oil level? What do you mean the electrical won't turn on? You put the key in and no radio no cluster? Or is it the engine won't turn over and the starter isn't engaging?

It's likely seized tight. You have bigger problems than just the cam. Not sure why you would have electrical problems now, but you're looking at a new motor since the bearing journals and races are probably trashed throughout. For future reference, low oil PRESSURE means turn that thing off instantly and coast to the side of the road.

Turns out I'm really screwed.

They found out that it's definitely the engine, told me its possibly bent valves. The dealer quoted me $1500 just in labor without parts just to open up the engine head and check it out to confirm it. +200$ for the diagnosis.

I wonder how the hell this happened? My cam was fine and timing belt was intact too.

Must be the back belt.

I'll keep you guys posted as I get ass raped by the dealer.

It's either timing chain or timing belt. One you can see the other you can't. I would also be suspect to the oil pump failing.

Used engine $2400-$3600

Did the engine still crank and just not start? If it didn't crank, one or both cams are likely seized and the head is junk. I can tell you the dealer is going to want a LOT of money to fix this. Find a used engine.

They said they will have to replace the cylinder head, bent valves, and timing chain.

Quote is $4500/parts/labor + tax.

Help me make a decision here.

My current thought is to find an indy shop.

Buy a used engine and drop it in. Or build the current one?

buy a used head online (a few members are selling built heads for half of that estimate), take it to an indy shop, have them swap it on and you're in business! then go to a metalyard and scrap your head for monies

hopefully your pistons are good.

I see used engines go for 1500-2k all the time. Just swap it out [up].
