View Full Version : Replacing Rear Mufflers and Tips

UnstableOS

So, I am about to pickup a set of universal mufflers (not Magnaflow) and 4 new tips to replace the stock set. I see a few folks here have done Magnaflows and in addition replaced the center resonator with an X pipe. I am wondering if anyone has a sound clip of just the rear mufflers being replaced? Anyone that has only replaced the rear mufflers please provide feedback. --I just can't justify $1600 for a partial catback.

I figure if replacing the mufflers don't give me enough sound, but I think it will, then I will have my guy drop the center res and add in an X pipe.

So far I have decided on a 12" muffler (5x9 oval) rather than the 14" sizing of the Magnaflows, should add a bit more sound.. The tips will be 3.5" dual walled and resonated, slash cut. Still trying to decide on the center resonator configuration..

Where did you by the tips ? I have an Xpipe with resonator removed on mine i'll see if i can get a sound clip up soon.

I'm also looking just for the tips. Have the centre resonator removed with jus the x pipe and love the sound. Just need some nicer tips.

I'm looking for sound clips of cars with only mufflers replaced, I have heard several X pipe clips. thanks

I'll post more details on the tips once I verify a few things.

Interesting to see this question pop up. I already have the resonated MF x-pipe installed. Have now for about 3 months.

I was working with a local shop to do another exhaust option for our cars... but they seem to have lost all interest. Since I have other things I want to do with my money, I opted out of a full cat back exhaust, and just decided to replace both cans. I am not sure how this is going to look or even sound, but I have two Magnaflow 14807s on the way. I opted for these since the tips are 4" (~102mm) vs. 3.5 (~90mm) found on the 14816s. I have a 2013 (B8.5) and as AWE has shown, the 102mm fills out the rear valance much better on the 8.5s.

http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/04/01/a04ccf833232e8640c66c2d24269455b.jpg

I realize the 14807s are the street series vs. the race, so not sure on the actual sound of these. Either way, with the x-pipe I think I should get a better sound than stock... w/o any drone. Not sure on fitment either. Given what I was able to measure however, everything should be ok.

I also have a roc-euro intake on the way which will also change the sound quite a bit. Not sure how long I will be able to stand the whine... but I got a good deal on a used one so I figured I would go ahead and give it a whirl.

In any event, once I get the mufflers on I will post a clip. I know you are looking for something w/o the x-pipe, but this is the best I can do. [:D]

Looks like those might end up being a solid alternative there Evil. The mufflers I am buying don't have tips attached so I have to buy 4 separate, so my price is up to around $500 for mufflers and 4 tips, not too bad. After install I am still going to be under $650 and if I need to add in an X pipe, I will still be under $800 when done which is half the price of a partial catback.

I am starting to wonder now if I should have went with 14" cases instead of 12".

Anyone know if the AWE mufflers are 12" or 14"? trying to get an idea on loudness of 12 vs 14.. I also assumed the 12" would give the fabricator a bit more room to play.

Their mufflers contain their resonance chambers they claim. If true, the size isn't really comparable and is just a crapshoot without knowing the actual design.

I am interested in how this sounds.

I got both mufflers for $400 to my door. Obviously with the tips. Again, from what I could measure under the car, they should fit just fine. I am not sure what size the AWE mufflers are but I am sure there is someone out there that could provide that info.

I think you will be OK with the 12" mufflers. All too easy to second guess. I will say this. I did place an order for the 3.5 inch tips and after doing so realized they offered the 4". So I mad scrambled in canceling orders... The 4" tips are shorter in length (3.75 vs. 7) but, I still think things will work out OK. I have to stay positive.

I am interested in how this sounds.

Me too!

This sounds promising. Since on our platform it's mostly about sound, I just can't justify 2.5k on an exhaust. Looking forward to the clips!

How did you get that low a price? It's almost a thousand bucks shipped for me. Remember the price listed is in pound sterlings. Currently at a 1:1.49 ratio.

Pointless you guys buying anything from over here...there is 20% V.A.T. factored into the price before shipping or exchange rate is even thought of.

Valvesonic are about 15 mins from my house, I'll probably just go miltek or scorpion n resonated though.

Well there she is. Starting to think I should start my own build thread.

Install took about 3.5 hours. Guy did some great work. Took his time. Worked with me on alignment and had no issues with input. The tips aren't staggered like most systems set for this car. In the end we decided a little cant of the cans made them sit nicely in the valence - vs. straight out. Straight out the tips seemed to present themselves a bit too much.

Sound. Sound is great. Deep and low on start up. I will warn you there is increased cabin noise/drone right now from about 2200rpm to 3000rpm. In my belief this is part of any aftermarket system.

With that said, I do believe this drone will die down a bit after about a thousand miles or so. These straight through cans need some break in time and that packing inside the "settle" or "burn" in.

Took a wife for a ride in it and it passed her test. Kind you, she is pretty easy going but she likes the new tone.

Pretty busy this week but I am going to get my oldest to help me out with the GoPro and get some clips on the outside.

Maybe I will get a build thread going now too. Never thought I would qualify for that. But I think I might be eligible now.

Thanks for the update, looks great. Do you think the X pipe could be the cause of the drone? I assume you had zero drone with just the x pipe? Install time was a bit long, did you have to pay a lot extra or did the installer just eat it?

My replacement mufflers should be here Thursday or Friday.. I hope to get them on this weekend.

X-pipe might be adding to it. I however went resonated vs some that did not. There was increase in cabin noise with that at first too. It then broke in. After 3 months I was use to it, I wanted more sound.

Installer just ate it. He quoted me 300 for the install. He had it for about 4 hours. In total I am fine with the cost. He is a custom shop vs. Midas or some other location. Not saying they wouldn't do a good job, but I felt there was a little something more with this install.

Total install cost was $300. Again, this is more than I was quoted at Midas (120-150) but I am ok with that. Guy has been doing exhausts for 30 years. He also suggested we go with 2.5 piping vs 2.25. He does not have a mandrel bender (only a few shops in the state do) so he felt with any bends, we would stay at or close to the stock 2.25 flow.

He was meticulous. He even showed me measurements for fitment. Both exhaust were within 1/16th of each other. They couldn't be set better - IMO.

Just remember, any change to stock and you are going to hear it. If you don't want to hear any increase don't make any changes. LOL. I know I am stating the obvious, but it really needs to be said.

All this coupled with the intake... The car sounds pretty dam good. It is turning heads for sure... And that happens before they even SEE the car :-)

Evil, can you post a pick of the exhaust on an angle looking down from about 3-5 feet behind the car? I ended up getting straight cut tips but I am thinking of returning for the slash cut. Would be great if I could see your tips from a few different angles so I can make a decision.

I went with Sebring Tuning/Jim Cook Racing. Sebring Tuning 12" universal mufflers combined with their tips that are similar to what is used on the Fast Intentions/JHM exhaust...well, the tips I have now are the same tips I believe as the JHM/FI setup, but I am leaning toward swapping for slash cut. I'll post pics when I get a chance. PM me if you want specifics.

I think it works well. Then again, I may be biased. But I am happy the way it turned out. My only suggestion is to work with the installer. As you do, you will be able to see how manipulating the placement of the muffler can affect the look of the tips.

Well I'm installed.. guys had a pretty tough time getting it all lined up with the staggering of the tips. Had to pull it down twice and re-weld. Only small alignment issue is the passenger side stagger is about 1/2" longer between the tips vs the driver side (have to walk to each side of the car and stare at it to even notice).. had to make it longer due to it not being flush with the diffuser. Anyway, I'll at least post some pics tomorrow and hopefully grab a quick video.

Sound is great and no real drone to speak of. After a few weeks, depending on if it gets a bit louder or quieter, I may straight pipe/x-pipe the center resonator out.. time will tell. I think I want it to be a bit louder but don't want to make any decisions until I get some miles on it. --$300 for the job.

Glad to hear you got them in. Did you go with Magnaflow? I can't keep up LOL. Looks like you paid exactly what I did. I got pretty lucky with my guy. Perfectionist and he was able to nail the alignment of the mufflers. Literally within 1/16 difference. Took him a minute to get it right.. but he got it right. He has been doing it for 30 years though, so he has some experience. LOL.

As you know, I have been running the resonated x-pipe. I went that route to keep down the drone and cut out the raspyness I was hearing from some that went straight or non res x. I am VERY sorry for not getting some sound clips up. They ARE coming. Just way to much wind to make it worth anyone's time.

With all that said, get some pics up!

Sweet! Just beat out the snow we're supposed to get.

That is exactly why I made the night run. Just had to be done. I tried importing to iMovie but, I am just not well versed enough... And my daughter (semi pro with iMovie) isn't here. So, importing to iPhoto and then will upload to YouTube or Vimeo.

Going as quick as I can! Plus I am sipping on some sweet tea and vodka while my smoker is on hour 4 of 5 making my beef jerky!

Here it is. I did my best with the time I had. Do yourself a favor (if you even want an idea of what the exhaust sounds like) and listen to this clip over some good speakers, stream it to your chrome cast and good home audio, or at least listen via headphones.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z5-F2oQ6iA&feature=youtu.be

This is the description I put with the video. I didn't feel like typing it all out again here:

This was a quick and dirty run to try and capture the sound of my exhaust. In all honesty, the recording does not do it justice. My GoPro (Hero 3 Black Edition) was mounted to the trunk and in a semi protective case. It was not in the waterproof case. In any event, the car sounds different in person. This is the best I could do at them moment

YOU MUST LISTEN TO THIS CLIP WITH QUALITY HEADPHONES to get an idea of what it sounds like. You just can't pick up the rumble with laptop or desktop speaker/s.

In the near future I will do some drive from/to/at/away from the camera while it is stationary at one fixed point.

During the filming of this, my wife could actually hear the whine of the supercharger and the rumble of the exhaust... as I was about a half mile to 1 mile away. With that said, you can't even hear the supercharger that well... and that thing is pronounced with my intake on it.

Car is Unitronic Stage 1. RocEuro Intake. Magnaflow resonated x-pipe (part number 11385) and Magnaflow mufflers (part number 14807). KW H.A.S. Kit lowered to about 25.8" fender to ground on all four corners. TSW Bathurst 19x9.5 et39 (even though you can't see them in this video) shod with 255/35 Michelin Pilot Super Sports.

Again, please listen to this clip with headphones or streamed to a quality audio system. Only then can you get an idea as to what the exhaust sounds like.

On paper I am pushing 400hp at the crank.

Man that sounds good! At a fraction of the cost it's a no brainer for me. Thanks for being the guinea pig.

Thanks! I think it sounds fantastic. I did my best to think it through, and I am happy with the result. Will I change it some day? Probably. But for now, I could not be happier.

Did you watch until the end? American flag and throttling. What could be better? LOL

Oh.. and those squealing brakes drive me NUTS! The temp has really dropped here due to the storm rolling in... and when it gets 40 or below they really make a lot of noise.

I'm wondering what a couple of cherry bomb extremes with the stock center res in place would sound like.

It did turn out really, really good. I may have to go ahead with this. I was thinking Milltek but this would be way more cost friendly.

I just ordered the mufflers and X-pipe, the same ones evil_o used... I'm super excited to get it all and take it to all get installed....

Thanks. If there was a performance gain with a full 2.5" system I would have gone that route. For me though, this just made sense.

I used magnaflow. Did the X-pipe for $115.00 and the mufflers for $420.00. I'll be searching for a shop to install them throughout the week now. Also bought the roc euro intake straight from their website.

Not bad. Not bad at all.

Install costs are going to vary wildly depending on where you go. The hardest part for anyone doing this job is going to be matching each side to look the same. It took my guy about 4 hours. He only charged me for 3 - since that is what he quoted me. He has been doing exhausts for about 30 years so he knew what he was doing.

The caveat to his install was he did not have a mandrel bender. With that, he went with 2.5 inch tubing to compensate for any loss in flow at the bends.

Another shop put in my resonated x-pipe. About a week after install I was getting a knock that sounded like my strut in the rear was loose. It ended up being the resonator hitting the heat shield. Took it back and they put in a hanger to keep it from moving. Free of charge of course :)

Just a couple of things to keep in mind. In any event, I bet you will be surprised at the quotes you get. If you are on the fence with it, just make sure you go with a reputable shop and pay for a good install the first time around. It pays off.

Gotcha.... Yeah unfortunately I'm stationed in a small town, so hopefully I can find a shop worthy of the install. I already talked to one guy who said he'd be willing to take a look at whether he could do it. He owned his own shop and was real nice guy. But either wY in a do my shopping around until I absolutely feel comfortable with the shop. Either way I'm stoked. Hey do you have any pics of your setup after install from under the car?

I will have to poke around a bit on my other device to see if I can find a pic of the resonator.

Keep us posted on install options and especially when you get it done!

You did. You are going to like that as well.

Took the longest interstate drive today - about 1 hour. Traveling between 65-80 in D... Zero drone. Very pleased.

Update? More pics? Vids?

I am dying to hear your impressions.

Get your stuff in yet? I am curious what your impressions will be since you will be doing most if not all at once.

I did the rear resonator first. Three months later the intake and finally the rear cans. So, I really had a chance to feel the effect of each. I bet all at once will be overwhelming... In a good way!
