MassDrop has thrown down a great buy on a Carbon lip!

I took a look at this. Doesn't seem horrible, but still taking a gamble. Carbon Fiber is +$80 but is appears to be only if a group buy quota is reached. I'll pass for now.

Looks like the Deval. Does it fit our cars?

I have a small hole in mine from this shitbox winter. I am wondering if this may be the better option instead of fiberglass repair and painting it black

NoR32 had both an Sline, and Non-Sline version of this, as he setup the groupbuy. He had a couple members both buy them off of him I believe, and they both agreed that the fit was great. Hopefully he can post some pics soon of both!

It's even better.

If the 10 people that commuted to buy at the lowest price just purchase it now then it drops to the second price. Then maybe more people would be inclined to purchase to get the best price.

Do you have any pics from further back on the S-line/S4 bumper?

Regardless, I committed at the $189 price, and it's at 16 people now. I'll keep an eye on it over the next 5 days, and consider changing to buy if we don't hit the 25.

How it works. If you purchase at first price and then it drops to lowest price you will be credited the money back at end of gb. It is an awesome system they set up. I remember when I did the RS grille for the first time with PhatAvant I ended up buying 6 of them so the price would drop. Haha but I didn't need to because 180 pieces were sold.

I'm really on the fence with this because of how bad the Chicago winters are. My front clip looks terrible especially at the bottom on those fins from the constant barrage of sand and my hood is a war zone from the highways. Luckily I have a great detailer and some Dr. Colorchip. Has anyone clear wrapped one of these or does anyone have insight into how well they can take a hit?

I obviously don't know for sure, but we're talking about a FRP part, with a layer of carbon fiber on the outside, and then some clear coat. It's not going to hold up any better than the stock bumper for sure. Some type of paint protection film will help a lot with sand, salt, and rock chips, but anything major and it's going to be more fragile (FRP/CF will crack on any big impact as it's not nearly as strong as full CF or the Poly front bumper).

So does it or does it not fit the B8 S5?

There is NOT a model that fits the B8 S5 (pre-2012).

My guess is these are made by JC Sportline. You can check out their site to get an idea as to what is available.... It's not the easiest site to navigate, but it will give you a good idea. They make knockoffs of just about anything you can imagine (including stock parts like CF mirror covers, and probably 90% of the RS4 grilles you see come from them). Their stuff is usually pretty decent quality for what it is.

My guess is we are still 3-4 weeks out before they start to show up. They had to finish the entire production run, then the whole lot will ship from China to NJ, and then from Massdrop in NJ to us.

If they are made by who I think, they will be decent, but we're not talking Vorsteiner quality here.... Fitment is usually good, finish quality is about as good as you can expect in a low cost FRP/CF product (even the CF ones are mostly FRP with an outer layer of CF).

This is the same company that makes most of the RS4 grilles you see, so that should give you a good idea that they do a decent job....

NoR32
04-26-2015, 10:17 PM
The base model one was full cd and the sline one was from with cf but I let them know it should be all cf and was told it wouldn't be a problem. Also not to sure if they knew exactly what I meant. But fitment was good anyways.

Maybe less than a month, but I don't know for sure. The last update said most of the order would be ready May 5th in China; the rest on May 15th. My understanding is Massdrop will not ship from China until the entire order is ready. My guess there is at least 2 weeks shipping between China and Massdrop, and then Massdrop and us. I could be off on my shipping guesses, but I think on larger bulky items like this that is close to the minimum we are dealing with.

Sorry I didnt get a chance to read all the comments (stuck at work) wanted to ask a questions which probably was asked 10000x (sorry for that).

This will fit a B8 S4 correct? From what I understood it will be the A4 sling option. I am joining the group buy now... anyone know the price?

Anyone have shipment details?

This is the last update provided on the 29th:

"Just a quick update on the status of the order.
The vendor told us earlier that we are at the final stage of production. Since it's the labor day long weekend in China, they are winding down operation at the moment preparing for the vacation. We can expect the first batch of the shipment to be ready for us to pick up shortly after business resumes mid next week.
Thanks for your patience and expect an update from us by the end of the day Pacific Time on 5/13 ."

For anyone that's interested, a member in the "AUDI A4S4RS4 B8-B8.5" group on Facebook uploaded a picture of his A4 with the Stvbek front lip. Thought it was a nice shot so I wanted to share. Actually initially thought it was the DEVAL front lip from first glance. I'm glad he corrected me.

They posted an update 3 days ago. Said they weren't happy with how they were shipped and none of them were labeled for was application they were for so they were having to repackage as they were hand sorting them. Don't think this is their fault at all at this point. I am glad they want to ensure the correct product gets to us without being damaged. There are also a few pics if you go to the page.

"Just a quick update on the lips.

So first thing first, they've arrived in our warehouse. And our warehouse guys are sorting through them.

However, we were all very surprised to find that there's absolutely no marking of the model number on the box. And it's taking us a lot longer and many back and forth phone calls to coordinate with the vendor to identify the specific model.

The packaging / cushion material used for the lip is also quite questionable as well. As depicted below. We will need to repack them with better protection before we feel comfortable enough to ship them out to everyone.

The good news is that the carbon fiber quality looks great. But just to be thorough, we'll be doing our own QC before we ship them out.

Thanks for your patience and expect an update from us by the end of the day Pacific Time on 5/22 ."

They have holes pre-drilled in the bottom as indicated in the picture, but not on the top where is mates to the front bumper. As mentioned above, you'll want to put (painter's) tape where you will drill holes and use a high quality bit on both the front lip and factory bumper. It shouldn't be a problem if you take your time and are careful.

Also as mentioned, there is no hardware included. At a minimum, you'll need 9 sets of hardware if you use all the pre-drilled locations. I haven't decided if I am going to use 3M tape (probably not since there are so many holes).

Basically I'll have something like this (in order from top to bottom):
M8 (8mm) nut (nylon locking)
M8 metal washer (should be 16mm OD)
Front bumper
CF front lip
M8 washer (should be 16mm OD, possibly nylon here to cushion against the CF lip))
M8 locking washer
8mm (M8-1.25) socket cap screw (25-30mm length)

**I'll drill something like a 12mm hole in both the lip and bumper. This will give me some "slop" to make small adjustments to the lip once installed. The pre-drilled holes on the bottom are around 24mm, so that leaves plenty of room for the 16mm OD washers.

I guess if you drilled the whole large enough for adjustable figment it would be ok. But when I decided to just do it when not installed on the car it was much easier and precise.

Mind you I did do two of them and that was the best way imo.

Removing the bumper is the easy part. It literally takes around 5 minutes. I don't see a lift making it that much easier.

If you don't want to do the install, I don't see any issue with having a shop do it. Nothing wrong with that if you want to save a couple hours of your life. I know it will end up taking me 4 hours to go buy the hardware and do the full install. I'm sure a shop will charge a couple hundred dollars....

i've taken my bumper off before and thats not the concern. i was just thinking that a lift might provide a little more room underneath the car to work, rather than taking off the bumper (at all)

I gotcha. There is just really limited room to tighten the hardware on the bumper side, and with 9 spots I just think it would be a lot easier to remove it. Even with a lift, access to the bottom inside of the bumper is really tight in some spots.

Just received mine in the mail today without ever getting a tracking number. Came in good shape and was the right one so off to a good start. Part isn't 100% perfect but plenty good enough for where it will be on the car.

Curious how you guys are mounting this? Just run some self taping screws with a washer into the bumper? Drill a hole and use a screws, washers and nuts??

I am think stainless steel bolts with washers and lock nuts. I might even put some 3m tape as well.

It's horrible to know that there are a lot of complaints about this. I got mine fairly early, I think I was #7 in line, and while it wasn't perfect, all the areas that aren't won't be seen. I'm going to drill through and use bolts, washers, and lock nuts like a few have suggested. With 9 mounting points, I don't think I'll use 3m tape. I haven't installed it yet, as I'm waiting for my Deval Rear to show up. Hope everything gets resolved with you guys.

Yes, luckily with my Amex. I decided that if I don't hear anything by tomorrow I will go ahead and dispute the charge.

This has been an awful experience and will prob not purchase from massdrop again.

I apologize for the delay in response everyone.

I was out of the office last week for a week, and admittedly, I did not do a good job updating my colleagues as well as the staff at the warehouse, so there's been some hold up as a result of this.

Our warehouse is identifying the items for the recalled shipment, and we will be shipping them back out before the end of the week. Admittedly, as a result of this hiccup, we will not be able to reship most of the returned lips since they are no longer in brand new condition. As a result, we have since placed a new order with the vendor, and they are shipping us a new batch of lips for us to ship out to the members that are affected.

Furthermore, we've also received tickets for lip damaged in transit similar to @B8S4 's shipment. We have also budgeted those and they are part of the new order we placed with the vendor earlier this week. We will ship out a replacement lip as soon as the order comes in.

I understand this campaign has not been handled up to our standard, and we apologize for letting a few of you down. Nevertheless, we are committed to make sure everyone are happy with their purchase.

Please continue to submit a support ticket if you are experiencing any problem with your purchase. We are slightly behind with our support tickets, but we will get to you within 24-48 hours.

Did anyone get installation hardware for this? I'm not sure if we were supposed to get it or not. I don't know if it's worth a complaint at this point.

I'm guessing another 2 months till I get a replacement. How frustrating. If they just packed it right the first time... Ugh. Approaching the 96 hour mark with no response to my multiple emails.

that sucks. guess i got lucky.

mine was just installed while my car got an oil change. 1 hr of labor so it was worth it to have someone else do it for me.

will post pics later tonight or tomorrow

That is pretty good to be charged only one hour to put it on. I imagine it will take me a couple of hours to make sure everything is lined up before I drill 9 holes in my bumper.

Looks good. Adds a little something to the front end, but I will admit, not as much as I thought.

Fitment is good, but I wish it stuck out just a little farther.

I painted the lip with Wurth satin trim paint and the splitter with plasti-dip. I think I'll add a layer of glossifier to make it match a little more. It would nice if the vertical slats to the splitter stuck out a little more (maybe some silver dip?)

I don't know the details but my shop was able to install it in an hour. The invoice listed some SS washers and some screws and they said it went really well.

Looking forward to seeing more pics from other people!

I got mine in and it was 4 or 5 pieces of Styrofoam and a crap load of bubble wrap, the one above with the way it was packed WAY better than what mine was but mine was not damaged. Now I have to decide whether I want to take this on myself or order the RS4 grille and just have the shop do it the next time I am in for routine maintenance.

Guess i was one of the lucky ones that got the correct piece.

Overall quality is pretty good, but not on the level of my Deval rear diffuser.

OK so odd question... Mine has a fake cherry scent, like air freshener type smell, anyone else's?

Just an update. Moments before I was about to deal with Amex about the charge I got a response from massdrop (4 emails and a week later). The person writing the email was apologetic for both the delay in support and the way I received my product. I have been told they sent a new lip which I should have early next week. Fingers crossed.

A common theme seems to be that the quality of this piece is "okay" (8-9/10). And that it certainly is not on par with the deval piece. Seeing as this was a large group purchase and only paying a couple hundred dollars, makes you think if they "cheated" the manufacturing process a little to help their margin. Meaning for those who have paid the normal everyday price of this piece, is the quality any better?

Got it installed tonight and will have pics tomorrow. Took the better part of two hours to get done. Ended up only using 6 bolts and 3m taped the center piece because I didn't want to dril thru the front splitter as well. Had two sets of hands which came in key as lining up the lip would be really hard with just one person prior to drilling the holes.

That's exactly what I did, taped the center and put 6 screws/washers/nuts on the sides.

Figured 6 would be plenty solid and so far it is on like a rock. Glad I decided to plastidip the center piece as well.

On the two that I installed the center bolts did not go through the own spliter and are not visible at all. Just an fyi

I used 3m tape on mine in 5 spots, did that basically to just hold it in place. Jacked up the car and got it mounted. I plastidipped the center piece as well. The weave matches the mirrors perfectly. Overall a good looking piece, however the minute or so it was on the concrete before I got it on the car it scratched the clear pretty easily. Kind of wish I would have had it clear wrapped or something now. Now I just need to figure something out for the chrome around the fog lights.

yes, you have to be extra careful not to snap the plastic clip for them, but they come off fairly easy.

Just an update. I received a new cf piece to replace the broken one. This one came in good shape. To echo what others are saying, the quality is okay, certainly not deval quality. It is riddled with imperfections but you would have to be up close looking for them.

Overall pretty good. Will install soon.

It does, but it's glossy instead of matte, so the color doesn't change.
