View Full Version : Help...locked out and running
[evilmad] So was warming up the car and went to get back in....LOCKED OUT! I don't have the valet key. Is there any way to break into our car? Just can't believe this. Thinking it is the key fob.

Well...I can offically break into cars now! Used a wedge to pry the top of the door corner open enough and cut the end off of a length of brake line I had in the garage....first tried to get to the unlock button....impossible to push at the angle so used the 'hook' to get the window open.

Taped the area with electric tape for less damage.

After 1 1/2hrs. the engine is nice and warm![>_>]
I guess if I'm warming up the car I'll be leaving the window open enough for my arm to get through.

I am SUPER paranoid about this, I always leave my door un latched or the window down when warming up my car if I'm not at home where the spare key is, glad to see a wedge and pry the door back enough to get into the car.

I never imagined...usually the locks engage once you are driving and all winter I was warming up the car with no issues. I was even thinking of getting a spare key a couple weeks ago :/ I'm thinking the battery needs replaced in the fob. I was cringing using the wedge...poor car lol

lol that is what I was thinking....really easy to do....do you need any parts? I'll hook you up! [:D]

Im pretty sure some police officers keep stuff to get into cars in their police cars.. Sometimes you can call and see if they'll come help out.

Hate to say its that easy on all cars. I work in law enforcement and we use the same things (although we have a plastic wedge, pump air bag, and rubber coated hook) to open peoples cars who lock their keys in.
Also am I the only one who has that little black plastic key that will unlock your car in their wallet?

Yeah. Mine is in my safe, along with my spare key.

Hmm I'm still trying to figure out how you locked yourself out. Do your doors auto lock ?

I don't get it.... Doors shouldn't lock themselves. If you open the door the door lock button doesn't activate, if your car auto locked and you get out, that same door stays unlocked until the car moves in either direction.
Did you hear the car lock itself? Maybe its KIT and he's telling you to check the cam follower or get JHM tune!

Yes, yes they do under a few circumstances. I know of these two:
1) Unlock from door panel and shut door back with key in ignition.
2) Unlock car with fob but never open a door.
DC5, I can definitely commiserate with you on this one. I hopped out of my car on time on campus at Clemson to pick up football tickets 30 feet from the car and left it running as it wasn't even warm yet. 2 minutes later when I went to get back in, it was locked. I had to call my room-mate and ride his bike back to my apartment with his keys and get my spare keys and ride back. Fortunately, I was parked in front of the police station so there was little worry of a theft - I was mostly worried about getting a ticket for illegal parking!

It happened to me one time and for some reason the trunk didn't lock. I went to the dealer and got the software installed again, never had a problem since.

That happened to me once too. I hopped out of the car for two seconds and when I went to get back in, all 4 doors were locked. Lucky for me the trunk didn't lock so I just climbed in there and pushed the back seat down and got in the car that way. It was also lucky for me that I didn't have the back seat fully clicked in.

I know my passenger side door will lock if someone gets out... I'll turn the engine off, leave the key in the ignition (usually when I wait on someone) It always locks, never thought it would happen if the engine was engaged. Plus it is just strange I have been doing this all winter and now this once it decides to lock up! BTW just changed the cam...but no tune...maybe it is telling me something after all lol

Nothing that can't be buffed out...the white is just some paint that was on the wedge.

Well, I never have to warm my car up, it is in my garage with the doors always unlocked. When I am away, I never let the car sit idling without me in it. I've always heard it is bad to idle turbo vehicles, so for safety, I just drive like a grandma until it reaches normal operating temp.
But, yeah, the day I need the keys away from home I will be pissed they are sitting in my safe.

I don't get how the doors can lock by itself. I can't get them to lock unless I push the lock button on the remote. Eight years of owning my car and taking it to the car wash, it never locks unless it is moving over certain speed/miles.

Normally I do not think our cars will lock themselves while running. Although they will lock right as you goto open the door after unlocking it a while ago but then the neighbor girl distracts you for a while and right as you goto open the door it locks on the timer making you look like an idiot trying to open your door -_-
Anyway maybe OP accidentally hit the lock button while getting out, maybe they hit the fob, maybe there is a bad wire (when I got my old stealth the wires were broken and when I shut the door the locks would luck and unlock rapidly sounding like a machine gun and you never knew if it was going to end up locked or unlocked lol).
Either way I feel much better knowing that little plastic key is my safety net from having to pry my door open :D

OP was warming up his car. Its not supposed to lock when the ignition is turned and running, also, the doors won't 'lock' manually unless you use the remote - or when someone is sitting inside physically locking it. I tried many times but ended up telling my gf to lock the doors whenever visiting a 7-Eleven, etc. I'm also confident about this because over the years my car has been to the same car wash and the guys running it steady through the washer (with the key in the ignition) then drive it out. Car stayed unlocked while drying. Maybe my car is programmed differently.
I also understand that the car can lock itself after a short period of time when someone opened to retrieve something, and or course forgets and leaves the key sitting inside. This is with the ignition OFF.

if you were to choke out both sides of the exhaust, wouldn't you eventually be able to stall the car?

Thats why I always leave a one inch opening at the window when I leave the car idling.
Step 1: DO NOT IDLE TO WARM UP YOUR ENGINE.
Step 2: Success
Why do people think its a good idea to idle for warmup?
#1 you are wasting gas( I say this not as a hippie but as someone who doesn't like paying extra for things I need.
#2 you are just soaking your oil sump in fuel
#3 it makes it super easy for someone to steal your car in the morning
#4 unless you are about to drive like fuckin senna to work, then you don't need to have a warm engine before driving, thats not how the engine was built or designed
#5 its a sweet way to lock yourself out of your car.

Good to know....the car was on for five minutes before I went back to it and found myself locked out...I'm not one for wastin gas!
There is something I was wondering though...once my guy had it and didn't let it warm up at all, freezing temp. -15 wind chill, drove a short distance and it just quit....I was thinking it happened because the engine was cold. After a little while started it and warmed it up a little and everything was fine. So, when it is maybe 20-30 out do you warm up your car?

Nope, maybe electronics, the engine is fine to run in cold temps assuming you have the correct grade oil , just don't rev hard while the engine is cold. If the engine died it was for something else, cold temps don't kill engines while they are running.

Running Mobile 1 0-40...it only happened that once...the car was literally frozen in the parking spot, four guys had to push it to get it out. Logically I figured it was the cold and the oil didn't circulate in the engine. (I hope that is the case)

People saying not to idle, you've never lived through a -45* Celsius winter!
Also OP I had to get road side to open my Passat door once when i lost my keys biking, they used the pillow wedge thing and it seemed to bend my door a tiny bit, open your door and put your foot at the bottom corner and brace it there and pull inward on the top window corner where you wedged it. I guess a lot of body shops have people visit them after a forced entry and that's literally all some guy does out back lol.

I was in the opposite position last night when I dropped my car off at the shop! I through the key into the drop box before I could lock my car and I couldn't lock the driver door. Did I need to like pull the door handle as I close to lock it? I would click the lock key open the door close it and the driver side stayed open. Maybe I should have tried to open the door click the lock key then close the door?
Either way my solution was to lock it and crawl out the trunk. LOL

Windows don't roll down or up when the car isn't running so you should be okay.

Just minor scratches to the inside of my door...they must have been really forcing it to bend the door. Funny, after this happened I spoke with my brother...a Cleveland Fireman and he said that is exactly what they do to get into cars....being the owner I think I took a lot more care not to do damage though!
