Peelers Plasti dip suggestion

My B8 S4 is monsoon grey with stock peelers. I was planning to Plasti dip the rim Matte Black and do a Dip Coat on top. On second thought should I add a coat or two of glossifier as well to get some pop? I don't like a tacky finish which is why I never like a glossy finish, but would just the matte black Plasti dip be too bland? There is also the brake dust issue,. plain black would probably be better to hide brake dust. Decisions...
Really appreciate the input from knowledgeable folks here, a picture or two would be great as well before I make my decision. Thanks in advance.

I think it will look cheap and would recommend against it. I know it's only ~$30 worth of risk, but to do the job "right" you really should take the wheels off the car and spend a good chunk of your weekend on it. Matte black wheels on a gray car will make for a very drab overall look. If you are going the Plastidip route I would recommend maybe the anthracite color from their "True Metallic" product line. I used the Aluminum "True Metallic" color with 2 coats of Glossifier on a previous set of wheels and was actually pretty pleased with the results. In hindsight I should have done 3-4 coats of Glossifier. A couple of close-ups to give you an idea of the end result:

Some tips should you decide to Plastidip your wheels in general:
* Do a thorough job cleaning your wheels before dipping. DYC sells "Pre-dip Spray" cleaner, which I think is just diluted isopropyl alcohol based on the smell, but I used it and it seemed to work

* Keep the plastidip cans in a bucket of warm water when not spraying. I read this tip somewhere, maybe on the DYC forums. I believe it helps to soften/liquify the 'dip inside the spray can to prevent lumps/chunks from coming out while spraying
* Your first coat should be very light, and your second coat should be equally light but should fill in the gaps from the first coat. Your subsequent coats can be a bit heavier.
* I used about 4 cans for 4 wheels, but I didn't paint the backs of the spokes or the barrels. I would recommend painting those surfaces, though, so you may need 6 cans of color.

Thank you SteveYem for your input and pictures. Thanks also for the tip, greatly appreciated. Though I like the finish of True Metallic, especially grey, I would like to have a bit of contrast as I think grey on grey even with glossifier wouldn't look right unless it's a dark shade of grey. For that reason though I understand your comment about drabness I would still prefer black for the contrast. To avoid total drabness is the reason of my dilemma to use glossifier to have some pop.

I didn't have any glossifier on my last car when I did it. They were always dirty, especially inside the rim, and were tough to clean. I peeled it off shortly after

I took the wheels off and cleaned them pretty well before spraying. Not sure how you'd cover the inside of the rim without taking them off

Thanks rymofo. The wheels are my summers so off the car right now so I can clean before applying the Plasti dip. I currently have my winter set on the car. I don't think I like the plain black in the first picture. May be I should try anthracite metallizer / gun metal? Now I am confused.

I didn't like it either but that was at their dirtiest. I bet the glossifier would help and it always looked better when it was wet...making me wish I used it. Maybe I did a bad job spraying them and other people had better experiences with it

You are right it could be dust. I'll just do matte for now, will see how it goes. Thanks for your input.

I agree with rymofo, the glossifier will give the finish a little bit of sheen and should also make the wheels a bit easier to clean. It should make the finish look matte/satin instead of flat. I would put as much glossifier on as you do color. Just remember that the glossifier is a bit more runny than the regular plastidip, so try not to go too heavy each coat. I had a few runs when I did mine, but as long as I flattened them out right away (carefully with a finger) they didn't stay permanently.

Slee- did my rims anthracite gray with glossifier. I took it out after a couple of months because the brake dust was difficult to remove. It started to come out with different contrasting colors because of the brake dust. I also tried matte black with glossifier, same result. Another thing you should think about is when you want to peel it. It can be a PITA because of the style of rims you have.

Honestly, as others have mentioned, save yourself the trouble. My biggest gripe is the fact that even with glossifier, the finish is so delicate. The slightest rub with a socket from my impact gun and the dip comes right off. Also, if you use the index card method and shoot the wheels off the car, make sure to get in between the tire and rim good, otherwise it will peel from the top edge. The only positive I have seen is hiding brake dust. I am in limbo right now if I will keep it for the summer or peel it off. Likely going to take it off. It was fun for one summer.... hope this helps. Oh and fwiw, start to finish took several hours to to the job.
