Hey everyone,
I have been looking at the wheel and suspension discussion post for three hours...
Just need your confirmation on my conclusion.
I'm trying to get a set of black BBS CH-R 19*8.5 et40. Would they be too narrow for the Michelin PSS in 255/35/19?
Thank you :)

I have that same size PSS on 9.5. They're rated for 8.5-10" wide so you should be fine.
Here's an example of the 255/35 PSS shoulder on a 8.5"

Hi 4RingRook,
Thank you so much for the reply!!
So is there any disadvantages for being on the narrow side of the fitment? I hear that stretching the tire on wheels can get you larger contact surface and better traction?

I had pss 255/35 on my stock peelers, they fit just fine. That's the stock tire size.

I dont think theres a 'disadvantage' - you're within their width specifications so you'll be fine. [up]

255/35 comes from the factory on the 8.5 wide peelers.

There actually is a disadvantage in that you are possibly making the sidewall less stable by bulging it out like that. There's been several articles written about this by GRM and a couple other racing mags where they tested the stock size and then the next wider allowable size with the same tire. Going wider tire on same size rim netted either no gain in track time or a loss. However, we are talking about very small amounts of time.
You will feel that the tire bulging out gives it a little more compliance and a bit added protection from curbing.
If you aren't going after outright speed and handling, it should be totally fine.
I should also mention that it REALLY DEPENDS on the tire and the car. The engineers pick the tire size based on the total setup of the car. True, they are shooting for somewhat of a trade-off between ride and handling...so your results might improve or might hurt the handling. Also the different tires have different sidewall strengths, some might not show much issue with bulging sidewalls.
Calling Tire Rack could help tremendously...they test a lot. I am just reporting back what I have read and don't have the stuff in front of me. I am also far less knowledgeable than many here...but I have experienced the loss of stiffness from the bulging personally.

The lateral response is reduced slightly with the narrower rim.

I'm running 255/35/19 PSS on 19x8.5. No issues.

I ordered 245 PSS for my new 8.5s and tire rack had me change to 255.

Might not be the sexiest look bulging out a tad, but having curb protection is pretty sweet.

^^Sorry to thread jack... but my car is almost do for tires and I am set on getting PSS. I have 19" rotors and want to get rid of the bulgy look of the 255 tires. I will be lowering the car as well so will 245/35's be a good fit or is there a better option?

Going narrow on the rim will cause a slight reduction of outer shoulder contact to the ground by pulling the bead towards the center of the wheel, reducing your footprint a bit.
This is probably why you see a very minor drop in performance, both in straight line and lateral traction. However, you do get more protection for the rim.

I run this set up on 8.5s and actually love the look.

Here are a couple more examples of PSS 255/35/19 on 19x8.5" wheel. I didn't like the look at the time, but after putting the same tires on 19x9.5" wheels I think I prefer the "meatier" look on the 8.5" width:

Actually, let me clarify that - if the car is at stock height or has a mild drop like H&R OE springs, then I think from an aesthetic standpoint that 8.5" wheel width is the way to go. On 9.5" wide wheels the relatively stretched look of the 255/35 tires only looks good to my eyes if the ride height is such that the tops of the tires are just about even with the fenders, or the tires are slightly tucked. Here is the same car, same ride height as the first two pictures but with 19x9.5 et35 wheels with the same PSS 255/35 tires. The sloped sidewalls look a bit hokey to me with that much tire-fender gap:

Now take the same 19x9.5 et35 with PSS 255/35 and put them on a lower car, and it looks better but even at this ride height something doesn't sit right with me. I think it's that the front end needs to be just a hair lower, but anyway you can maybe get my point that the 8.5" width may look preferable unless the fender-tire gap is all but eliminated:

I know the last comment was back in 2015, but how did the BBS CH-Rs 19x8.5 et 40 worked for you? I am thinking about those, or a different set which comes as 19x9.0 et 40. I am going to use goodyear tires 255/35/19, but I am kind of concern about how this will look on stock s-line sport suspension. The BBS fit will be almost identical to stock, the one will increase 9mm to the outer position of the wheel. The typical spacer are 10mm, thus I am assuming 9mm will be okay w stock sport suspension and that the 255 tire will be perfect on the 9.0 wheel width. Thanks!
