View Full Version : Clunking/Vibration Issue

Ok so I have searched around and found a few answers, but I still can't tell if it would solve my problem or not. During deceleration I have a clunking/vibration noise which at first sounded like it was coming from the front. The steering wheel will shake between around 60-70 mph during either acceleration or deceleration. I put the car up on the lift and rotated the front wheels with no noise found, then I rotated the rear wheels and heard a soft clunking (probably not loud because I couldn't spin the wheels fast enough). The clunking noise sounded like it came from the rear differential housing. I checked the oil and it was nearly black (95k miles) and also had a silver shiny swirl in it. I drained all of the gear oil out and replaced with new, but that didn't solve the issue which I didn't think it really would. My question is if my rear diff is shot and needs replacing? Or would my right rear axle need replacing? Or both? I really would like confirmation before I drain my wallet.

Shiny swirl is not good at all. I would suspect you diff is not in good shape. To rule out the rear cv shafts look at the boots and see if there are any rips. Someone will chime in to confirm or deny what I said.
